Turnbull: Nuttall move was beneficial for both parties

Scunthorpe United’s Chief Operating Officer Lee Turnbull said top scorer Joe Nuttall’s move to Oldham Athletic was beneficial for all parties.

Scunthorpe United’s Chief Operating Officer Lee Turnbull said top scorer Joe Nuttall’s move to Oldham Athletic was beneficial for all parties.

Nuttall made a u-turn and penned a three year deal at fellow National League strugglers Oldham on Friday, having initially rejected a move to Boundary Park in October.

“Oldham have been chasing Joe for a while now and they had made us one or two offers”, Turnbull told BBC Radio Humberside.

“Previously he had expressed to us that he preferred to stay at the football club and perhaps see out his contract or look for a move in January.

“Oldham have targeted Joe and identified him as a key component for them moving forward. I was in contact with his agent for a couple of months and the indication from his agent was that he thought he could get league football but clearly Oldham have come back to Joe and his agent with a better offer and equally they have matched his valuation.

“It’s a difficult one as Oldham are down at the bottom of the table with ourselves and are classed as a rival but sometimes the business of football takes over and you have to make these decisions.”

Turnbull confirmed the fee would remain undisclosed but revealed there were sell on clauses included in the deal.

“It is undisclosed, but there are future sell-ons for us so there are some incentives as well if Joe does well. It is a deal that was beneficial to both parties and we move on.”

The 25 year old was the Iron’s top scorer and has scored nine goals this term.
