Scunthorpe United have been dealt an injury blow ahead of the new season as defender Emmanuel Onariase is set for a spell on the sidelines.

Iron Bru understands that Onariase, a £35,000 summer signing from National League side Dagenham and Redbridge, is set to undergo surgery on a hernia problem.

It is believed the club have decided surgery is the best option for the former West Ham youngster, rather than manage the injury over the course of the season.

The 23 year old, who was also attracting the interest of Bolton and Leyton Orient before making the move to Scunthorpe, played just half an hour in a 2-1 friendly win over Hull City U23s and did not feature in the most recent friendly over Nottingham Forest U23s.

The news comes as a further blow to new Iron boss Neil Cox, who has already dipped into the loan market to bolster his defensive options with the signing of Bournemouth’s Tyler Cordner.

The club are also sweating on the fitness of club captain Jordan Clarke and Harrison McGahey who have yet to feature in any friendlies so far.
