Scales’ injury sounded a nasty one, don’t want many more with the size of the squad.
Has a swelling where a cut is which requires a stitch or two where a stud pierced his skin. Butler expects him to be out for a week as there is no fracture or break.
Butler also said that’s us done now in terms of signings as the squad has reached 20 players. I find it a bit odd though because Abraham is still here on trial and came on for last 30mins. Going by that Burden and Hunter must have simply gone elsewhere.
Shame really as Burden looked promising.
Looked a good player so far. Good range of passing and he looks neat and tidy. A little off topic, but I have a feeling Brogan will end up scoring more than Butterfield did last season.

Abraham, Burden and Rowley have featured in all the games so far, But Hunter was missing last game so not sure if he either picked up an injury or that he decided to move on. Club haven’t said a word. I still think we need a midfield spoiler.
Rowley has looked good so far. Burden and Abraham look good young players. I’ve just remembered Keenan Ferguson who played first game with us who’s done a lord lucan, again the club have said nothing.
Tad surprised at the lack of recruitment action
Has been hinted that next signing will be coming from trialists. Is Butler wanting to see more of them or are we currently working on deals with them ?
If that is indeed the case, we need to get a bloody move on.
Ravenhill as gone to Buxton
I first read that as Burton and thought fair do’s league club good luck to him but Buxton?!
Cannot have thought much of him and no deal on the table.
Butler wanted to see him in pre season games whereas Buxton signed him from the off. The guaranteed contract is why he moved on, not because we didn’t want him.
I don’t blame Butler as he was out most of last season injured.
I have since looked at the Winterton picture gallery on the official site and Abraham is definitely there so he must have come on 2nd half. No sign of Hunter.
According the the match feed updates on twitter Abraham came on in the 64th minute. I didn’t go so not sure if that was the case or that somebody had made an an error while reporting.
Definitely no Hunter though. Be a shame if he already moved on, I was hoping we would be in with a chance of signing him. This is where I still think the club slips up with it’s poor communication.
Why not just interview Butler post match and put it up on the official site with his thoughts on the performance and info on trialist players?
This is one thing the club needs to improve on as it’s been the same now for years.
No Hunter today so whether he’s picked up an injury or has moved on is anybody’s guess.
“as the reality of our financial predicament has started to bite!”
A ball hasn’t been kicked yet so I don’t get why your already have it in your own head that the squad is weaker. We still haven’t finished strengthening the squad yet. If we were to sign Rowley and Hunter have 2 players who have performed well at much higher levels than we’re currently at.
Putting that to one side, a huge part of the debt I believe will be paid up by the time this season comes around. The Iron Aid/open day will rake in an absolute fortune and all that will be going back to the club. All the catering now is in house.
Michelle did say she would be looking to clear the debt before the season starts and firmly believe that to be the case. Not doubt we have no Butterfield type marquee signing but that’s not to say we’re hugely weaker by any means.
I’ve been extremely suspicious of iron414 from the 1st day he/she posted. All you’ve done is bash the club post in post out, bit of a questionable mindset of a supposed fan.
Is there anybody at the club you haven’t had an go at ?
I confused as to what your game is because it doesn’t add up.

would come from the trialists plus a few loans
Spot on. Butler hinted that was case too. I wouldn’t disappointed if we signed our two ex youth players who wouldn’t cost a lot, along with Hunter and Rowley who both looked very good.
Rowley can play in a few different positions as is the same with Hunter. Burden can play all across the front line and Abraham looks a capable young CB which we’re going to need if we set up with 3 CB’s.
Butler maybe wants to see them a few more times to be fully sure before pulling the trigger.

Abraham & Burden would have come through the academy so I do not see what we have wasted. Other trialists will get a chance.
Both look really good youngsters. Abraham looked solid and Burden I was pretty impressed with and looks to have improved having been trained by better coaches at Coventry. Featured a lot for their u21’s and did fairly well for them. Took his chance well and looks a good finisher.
Good to have them both back.

Will Wondergoals be hoisting the main sail on HMS piss the league again this year , after last seasons titanticesk voyage im guessing a more realistic evaluation of the Irons chances.
I think we’ll do well this season for what it’s worth. No clueless Jimmy Dean and a more fitter team. I obviously haven’t got a crystal ball, but I firmly believe that if we had a fitter team last year with a more clued up manager we would have gone up.
Cliff, Roberts would work in a 3/5/2 as the more advanced central midfielder of the 3. I thought he looked good there last season when played. Clunnan would have to be in there with either Brogan or Beestin, if Beestin isn’t up top.
if we do play this 352 formation we don’t really need Kelly/Law any more. Denton will end up being first choice and we wouldn’t need 3 who can play in that one position. Advantage of keeping Law is that if we do change formations he could play on the wing off the bench. The downside is, as we all know…he’s injury prone.
In my opinion Denton and Barrows would be perfect as wing backs. Barrows played further up the pitch during his last loan spell and Denton likes to bomb forward and has good energy. Scales would do well there and Law you would have thought would do well with due to having the safety net of 3 CB’s behind them.
Kelly I don’t think would be suited to play as a wing back. Whenever I’ve seen him he looks an out and out fullback and isn’t that great going forward. Put it this way, he’s not the most attacking full back that I’ve ever seen.
Abraham did pretty well, but due to him not having to do much I didn’t mention him. Looks to have something though and is only young at 18yrs old.
Anyone know who this Abraham is
Finn Abraham, young CB who was an ex youth player who then moved on to the Cods when the youth team was scrapped. 18yr old right footed CB.

3/5/2 formation with Law and Scales as wing backs. Possibly suggests we won’t be be paying with out and out wingers. Butler did say though that he’d be trying other things out so we’ll have to see.
Hunter and Rowley impressed and our ex youth player Burden looked promising. The two defenders on trial didn’t have to do much due to who we were playing so who knows when it comes to those two.
Kelly had a very slight thigh strain and Denton is a week behind the other players so we’re being careful with him. Denton is due to feature against Gainsborough.
Interesting in regards to Beestin, but I remember him saying his favoured position was upfront 2 or 3 seasons back so hardly a surprise and could prove to be a good link up top.
This is before a ball has even been kicked. Iron414, shall we not bother with this season then ?
This forum has always been full of old whining sods.
Looks, let’s be serious…you can’t have it both ways. You can’t become sustainable and cost cut and yet sign marquee players like Butterfield. Expecting us to do that is plain stupid.
I will however say it’s crazy to even say this team is poorer than last season when a ball hasn’t even been kicked. These players don’t look as good on paper, but let’s wait a while first until coming to the conclusion that we’re worse than last season.
The very same people who were moaning we were spending too much money who kept droning on about us not being sustainably run are the same old miserable whining pillocks, who are now moaning that we’re cost cutting and the standard of players we’re signing aren’t comparable with last season.
I only ask as my Spanish club are limited to a squad of
lol This is definitely a parody account. I’ll play along Rene, who’s your Spanish Club of choice, Barcelona, Real Madrid,, Atletico ?
WG yes you are missing something. Your marbles if you think we have a better squad without the aforementioned and with the addition of the nobody’s we’ve signed so far.
The mere fact you keep choosing not to confront the fact last seasons team kept being out fought and out run by part time players is blinkered to say the least.
How the hell can any sane person keep harping on about a team which lacked fight and only came from behind twice from losing positions all season ?
You have to be a wind up merchant. No way in a million years that you’re being serious. Butterfield was the only mainstay out of those players you listed and he faded badly.
WG if you are trying to tell me that you think we’re a better football team without Ogle, Butterfield, Elliott and DSF you must have been hitting the hard stuff again.
Regarding the departing players.. Ogle was good, not great. Elliot didn’t feature all that often. Sembie Ferris only contributed towards the back end of the season when coming back from his loan and then you have your hero Butterfield, who was way less effective towards the 2nd half of last season.
We failed to gain promotion last season, we at times lacked fight and energy. I think we only came back from a losing position twice all last season.
If last seasons team was that good, why were we often out run and out fought by part time players with much less ability ?
Ok being technically fantastic, but our team last season lacked energy and running power. The balance between technical ability and energy and athleticism needed to be addressed from last season.
Will be fully addressed this coming season ?. We will have to see, but Butler’s going the right way about it during pre season training
You confuse me iron414 because you keep harping on about last seasons players but as I said above, it wasn’t right last season. How can you keep banging on about last season’s team when we came back from a losing position twice and we kept being out worked by part time players ?
Am I missing something here ?
If it’s not quite as pretty but we’re digging in, players are putting shifts in and challenging for promotion; thats what people want, not hanging on for a Butterfield worldie.
Perfectly put.
But if we’re losing whilst playing unattractive football the gates will inevitably take a hit wiping out any benefit of cost cutting.
Who said we’re going to play unattractive football whilst losing a lot of games?. Who’s to say we won’t win a lot of games and play good football whilst doing it ?
Even when we weren’t playing well there was always the possibility of Butterfield scoring a 30 yard screamer
Up until Christmas no doubt he was fantastic, but he started to slow down was countered by much worse players who were more physical and had more energy. At times he was a luxury player.
You’re comparing us to last season but we were after too nice to play against and lacked fight and energy. The mentality/fitness levels and fight were lacking at times last season which culminated in us being out ran and out fought by part time players.
How many times did we come back last season from a losing position, was it just on the two occasions ?
I’d much rather take a less “pretty team” in a footballing sense and swop that for a more solid, hardworking one which is going to dig in more but who can also play a bit.
Tamworth last season were dreadful, they were very well drilled, fit and apart from 2 maybe 3 standout players they were fairly poor and yet they romped the league.
What does that tell you iron414 ?
Butterfield will be a miss but as mention above, he was quickly nullified by way less talented players with more energy. Ogle was solid but his final ball into the box was awful and defending at times wasn’t great to say the least.
I suspect Butler and Schofield will have more nous then Jimmy, who reminded me of a low league Southgate. Butler has already said we’re to play with two up top which is better right from the off.

Liam Ravenhill (ex Donny)
Ash Hunter (ex Fleetwood)
Keenan Ferguson (ex Spennymoor)Any idea who the others are ?
You crease me up WGs .. previously stating about my scrapping the bottom of the barell and the nthis shower turn up for a run and accessment.. sorry shudnt post when pist but really gents this is pub league ..
Well you have two choices, you either choose to watch us or you don’t, really..it’s that simple. If you feel that the quality level will be too low for you to handle then simply don’t bother.
Your choice.
Liam Ravenhill (ex Donny)
Ash Hunter (ex Fleetwood)
Keenan Ferguson (ex Spennymoor)Any idea who the others are ?
I thought you knew everything Burny, we rely on you for your expert knowledge
You clearly thought wrong then. Senile ?
Looked fairly good in the few games he played, it’s a sensible signing.
We were definitely told they would be announced today, so we’ll have to wait and see. After the GK has signed we’re still a RB and two wide players short but were told told they would be signing from trialist players, so lets hope they are of a good standard.

Read it again. Arnold RB and Walker LB. Hardly ideal as there is no natural LB with Shaw not yet match fit. Southgate at his finest. Kane needs to play as he’s a goal scorer. I just think playing Kane in an attacking midfield role behind Watkins makes sense as he drops back to that position when playing upfront anyway.
Least playing Kane there we end up with a striker up front. I’d leave Foden out personally and play Kane. Gordon and Palmer need to be starting too.
Should have got Guy Ipoua and Gandhi to take part.
