    The stats I posted were from the important part of the season, where we were playing the teams in and around us. Again, the stats don’t lie, his record, when it counts for Scunthorpe United a beyond poor.

    @Deereyme66 – Thanks, if you cannot tell, one of my roles in life is elite and performance coach developer for UK Athletics. In fact I am in Birmingham tomorrow for some training and development, and the session theme is “Planning and initiating coach learning and development”. Lots of discussion will be had around the practice continuum, developing resilience, motivation etc.

    One of the phrases that I have heard way too many times over the years is “They looked good in training” and seeing the team struggle.

    You have to ask, what were they doing in training all week? Was it representative of what they are going to face on match day, or was it some simple tasks that made the players look good (unchallenged crosses, unchallenged passing etc.)?

    Coaches often try to simplify a single task too much, making the task irrelevant or the relevancy reduced too much. An example could be ‘trying to beat a defender and deliver a cross to a striker who has players defending him. That could be too challenging for some players, so the coach removes the player to beat, or the defenders marking the striker. The player then looks good, he crosses the ball, and the striker meets the cross, burying the ball in the back of the net.

    The manager / coach might look at that and say “they look great in training” however, this over simplified task has not taught the players how to cross under pressure, and the striker hasn’t been taught how to create space etc. Matchday comes, and we can’t get the crosses into our strikers, the strikers move like dustbins, we can’t score, lose the match and the manager says, “I didn’t see that coming, they looked good all week”.

    In this specific case, practicing how to cross does not produce high action fidelity and is a perfect example of ineffective training.

    @Ferrite – Pep is a good example of a manager who has successfully merged the older autocratic style with the newer more motivational / emotional style. I suspect the key to success for Pep (apart from a large cheque book) is the fact that his team have bought into the ‘why’, and Pep nurtures his players, allowing them to grow and feel confident of his support.

    Something we seldom see these days at GP!

    If the manager / coach(es) are shouting at the players during the match then the manager / coaches have failed in their respective roles. If the players are coached effectively week on week, the need to constantly shout, instruct, berate the players on match day would be dramatically reduced.

    As I mentioned earlier, a good coach would give the players freedom to make not only in-play decisions, but also about the tactical approach for each match. For some reason many managers / coaches are stuck in the 1980’s and seem to believe that they should do all the decision making and thinking for players. Players need to fully understand what the tactics are, and their individual and collective responsibilities. If the players understand this, and are involved in the whole process you will see the players self-manage during the match, and can respond swiftly to in-play developments.

    People are right to question Dean’s managerial ability, the results over the last five matches have been thus;

    0-4, 0-0, 0-1, 0-2, 0-2

    That’s one point from a possible 15, and zero goals scored.

    We all want him to do well, as this would mean that we are getting decent results and the club would be climbing the table. The issue that many fans have is that we seem to be getting worse, week on week, and Dean appears to be unable to arrest the decline.

    David Hilton took a gamble on Jimmy Dean and backed him with signings. It is clear to all but the most blinkered of supporters that the gamble did not pay off. Can Jimmy Dean turn things around? I hope so, however from what I have seen so far, I am sceptical.

    These are my beliefs based on the results and performances I have seen over the last few months. Sadly I missed the Wealdstone win, in which I believe, we actually played well and looked cohesive. Since then we have definitely gone backwards.

    If stating this makes me a troll, then so be it.

    I feel sorry for Jimmy Dean, it wasn’t his fault that he was appointed in a job where it appears that he is out of his depth; that’s on Hilton.

    Dean’s record at the lower regional leagues is impressive however, he hasn’t done well at Scunthorpe, averaging just 0.79 points per match. Even when you look at his record in the NLN it is not that impressive, with an average of 1.29 points per match.

    https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jimmy-dean/profil/trainer/107110

    I honestly believe that if we had employed a more experienced manager, we would of likely gained enough points to avoid the drop, or at least dragged it out to the last match. Jimmy Dean’s points per match record at Scunthorpe (0.79) is actual worse than Neil Cox (0.86)!

    It is not just about what the coaches / managers do in the technical area on matchday. What happens in training, in the changing rooms, and behind closed doors is just as important. What they learn during the week will be brought into the match play.

    Set the players free, allow them to grow, and they will become better players who make better decisions.

    ” Evidence of the match results and team performances have shown that Jimmy Dean is clearly learning on the job, and at the expense of Scunthorpe United.”

    Interesting you think that Daz, IMO he’s not showing any signs that he’s learnt anything since he’s been here. Same s**** almost every week, still thinks 4-2-3-1 is the best system for the current squad and that Pugh and Shrimpton are the MF answer.

    Just because I said he was learning on the job doesn’t mean he is a fast learner. Some people learn quickly, some take longer, and some never learn despite how much time you give them. Jimmy Dean seems to be performing closer to the later of the three.

    A good coach would give the players freedom to make not only in-play decisions, but also about the tactical approach for each match. This enables the players to grow, take more ownership of their own, and collective performances on the pitch.

    Shouting and telling players what they should be doing only leads down the route of being unable to make in-play decisions effectively. Which in turn, undermines their confidence, and ensures that you will never get 100% out of the players.

    In answer to OP question: it must be the person who appointed him, and that would be Hilton.

    I am pleased that Hilton came in and paid the necessary bills to ensure the club were able to see the season out however, Hilton has scored a few own goals since taking the helm; firstly replacing Nelson just as he was getting a tune out of the team, secondly the way he announced the appointment of Jimmy Dean and thirdly, appointing Jimmy Dean. Evidence of the match results and team performances have shown that Jimmy Dean is clearly learning on the job, and at the expense of Scunthorpe United. Then let’s not forget the closing of GP / training in Ilkeston announcement, followed by a swift U-turn. This was quickly followed by another U-turn following the announcement to close the academy, and again more issues on how the academy players, parents, coaches etc found out!

    If I were grading Hilton’s tenure to date I would grade him has a “D” and write “After initial promise David has gone through a challenging few weeks and needs to think ideas through thoroughly before announcing them. David needs to ensure that all parties who are impacted by any announcements / changes are informed before any changes are announced in the press, website, or social media. I would like to see David go into greater detail on his plans for the forthcoming season in the National League North, as well as his short, mid, and long-term plans for the club, ground, and training facilities.”

    Whilst we can all agree that the u-turn was indeed a sensible choice, the worry for me was that he thought that was a good idea in the first place. IMO Hilton has not got off to a good start, but the jury is still out and I will wait to see what happens over the summer and into next season.

    I hate to say this, but I feel Dean is out of his depth. I have seen nothing that leads me to believe he can actually improve the performances, in fact I would go so far as to say he is actually making things worse.

    In terms of redundancy cost, a lot will depend on how they employed the services of the academy staff.

    It is common in sport for organisations to engage the services through a PSC (limited company), and give them yearly contracts through their limited company (I’ve worked that way for many years with England Athletics). If the academy staff were employed that way then there will be zero cost to the football club. If however, they are contracted employees of Scunthorpe United then undoubtedly there will be significant redundancy costs.

    I’m still absorbing the intervie, and my thoughts so far as thus;

    As much as it pains me to say, he is making the correct choice to shut down the academy, and downsize the staff. I feel for all who are impacted by this, but it had to be done as it threatens the very survival of the club.

    The season ticket malarky makes sense to me, and I renewed mine via bank transfer last week. There is little benefit to Scunthorpe United if the bank just trickle feeds season ticket sales through on a match-by-match basis.

    I agree with the club offices going part-time, however I do admit, I have reservartions about day-to-day operations being shipped out of town. A football club should be part of the community, and this goes against that!

    As for players training in Ilkeston during the week. I’m not too fused about that; most of the players and playing staff are not locals to Scunthorpe so if better facilities exist elsewhere, why not use them (although I would like to know how much it will cost Scunthorpe United to access those facilities). That said, I do hope this is a short-term solution, and that DH builds something better in Scunthopre or the surrounding area. Perhaps something that could bring in extra revenue, with a gym, cafe, bar, multi-use pitches etc.

    Overall I would say that I am firmly in camp 2, I will continue to support Scunthorpe United in any way I can, and will watch closely to see if DH makes good on his words. If he does, he will have my backing, if he doesn’t, I’ll round up a mob with pitch forks and chase him out of town!

    It’s worth noting that there is little between the two managers (Nelson & Dean);

    Nelson’s Record : Pld 8, W2, D2, L4 Pts 8 F8 A13 GD-5
    Dean’s Record (so far): Pld 11, W3, D2, L6 Pts 11 F12 A19 GD-7

    They both average 1 point per match (Niel Cox averaged .86).

    Yeah but Cox was reeelly reeelly brave !!!

    So Admiral Nelson, ok mate Dean and Calamity Cox were all shite .. but i think Hill must of taken top prize for lowest points per game ratio ??

    Keith Hill – 0.46 points per match. That’s impressively poor!
