Stood on the terrace and for the most part was bored shitless, and not for the first game either. Game after game we barely create any chances of note. We just look so passive, even at home against part time teams we rarely seem to have a front foot mentality and a willingness to have a go at teams. Entertaining football seems a distant memory. A poor brand of football is acceptable to some extent if consistent results follow but shit football and poor results doesn’t make a great combination. Too much emphasis on keeping a clean sheet? It’s hard to be enthused about things currently
Really disappointing decision by the club to play this behind closed doors, obviously this wouldn’t appeal to everyone and as such the crowd would have been comparatively low, but shouldn’t we have been given the choice on whether to attend or not? If the cost saving line put out is true, what kind of trouble were our local constabulary expecting and how many riot police, horses etc. were they planning to unveil for a glorified friendly.
It certainly did today, Kelly apart they didn’t positively impact the game. We had control of the game and what momentum was building went completely when Whitehall was replaced. If he was subbbed with a view towards saving energy for Monday’s game then let’s hope that’s a lesson learned for Butler – win the game in front of you then deal with the next one as it comes. I’d have taken 10 points from 12 at the start of the season though so all in all pretty content so far

You can add Shrimpton to that list as well, you’d think Braithwaite is well down the pecking order but could be a useful option off the bench when injuries / suspensions hit later in the season, and as said if playing regularly for Gainsborough then should at least retain match sharpness.
I’m prepared to be shot down here and it’s obvious to see Dean has made mistakes, and rather annoyingly continues to do so. For the love of god Jimmy, quit this one up top shite. But to pin all the ills on Dean seems a bit simplistic no?? Some of these players go back to Cox’s era so will have played under 5 different manager’s including caretaker’s etc. How many of the current squad would we lose any sleep over if they were gone tomorrow? To say some have been stealing a living is unfortunately not a massive understatement. If multiple managers can’t get a tune out of the players then maybe just maybe the players themselves should be taking as much flak as Dean is currently. I’m sure I’ve heard of a thing called professional pride.
I have no great conviction that Dean is the answer but it’s clear in my mind he’s not the only problem.2 users thanked author for this post.
What have I done to deserve this? by the Pet Shop Boys. They should play it on the tannoy every game – it epitomises my club and the last few years in a nutshell

There has to be an escalation doesn’t there? I’m not clever enough to know what that escalation looks like but time appears to be running out

So now the local consortium bid has been derailed, given this group seemed to be the most popular choice of our fan base is the Iron Trust’s neutral and impartial stance against Swann still a valid position? Or will they now find a voice. Swann Out
And I thought Turnbull’s statement was bad enough. I don’t expect them to condone the pitch invasion as such as technically it is a criminal offence but to use the words neutral and impartial in relation to Swann killing our club – hang your heads in shame Iron Trust. You don’t speak for me
Swann out, by any means necessary3 users thanked author for this post.
I agree about Whitehouse, surely he has something to offer but I’m not so convinced about what you think Daniel provides. One decent performance in pre-season aside he has done nothing since the season started. He hasn’t got the fitness / legs to play either left back or left wing back. Maybe he could play up top if we were to go more route one but if Daniel is the answer we really are on the shit

Really poor from a small section of our travelling numbers last night. Spent most of the game signalling Nuttall out for abuse, “lazy this, shit that”. Nuttall was the first of our players over to the crowd after the game due to being in the vicinity when the full time whistle went.
I will say I wasn’t at the front so couldn’t hear the dialogue but from where I was it seemed one way animosity until eventually Nuttall reacted to something, yes he shouldn’t react and he was way out of order for the one figure gesture last season but he rightly apologised for that and as frustrating as he can be as a player at times (e.g.) I personally think he could use his build / physique better and impose himself better at times against the centre-halves, he didn’t deserve that reaction last night. A small section of the away end created that incident last night, ridiculous.4 users thanked author for this post.
Im in two minds what to make about that to be honest. We were clearly the better team in the first half, I can’t recall them having any worthwhile effort after their initial goal for the remainder of the first half but I can’t help but think we were a bit too passive in the 2nd half, we stopped pressing high up the pitch and seemed to gift them too much possession and territory. Could it have been the after effects of the long trip to Torquay a few days beforehand or are we just that anxious / nervous about having a lead – have we genuinely forgotten how to win away? I don’t exactly subscribe to Daws’ assessment that we played well in the second half. On a plus side Beestin looked more like the player pre covid, a point gained maybe but probably could have / should have been 3 points.

Fletcher & Marsh were replaced by Beestin & Feeney earlier, the O’Malley for Apter substitution was the strange decision – yes he could have had a knock but he didn’t look as though he had
Because it doesn’t appear to work – maybe try something different?

A nonsensical substitution, time after time if there’s a decision to be made we take the negative / defensive option. At 2-1 up, with the momentum we had at the time the best way for us to win the game was utilise Apter more, not replace him with a full back, sit back and try and see the game out. With our defensive record why was this decision taken? Which flank did the cross for their equaliser come from, yep you guessed it.

Granted they’re not great but both are better than Tomi Ameobi. Interesting there’s been no apology yet from Nuttall (unless I’ve missed it). It was a massive over-reaction by him to the situation but I’d like to think an immediate post game apology might have calmed things down. If no apology made before next Saturday it’ll be interesting to hear our fans reaction to him at Bristol.

Lesgeo,
I can see the logic of what you suggest re: blooding of young players etc. with a view to evaluating for the future but if as you suggest “The only thing that matters now is next season” then can you explain the selection of Hackney in the starting X1? Where’s the thinking for next season in that? Would we not benefit from giving Wilson some game time on the right, even given the apparent restrictions re: players frozen out, of those still in favour Feeney could have played a more central role couldn’t he? Hackney, Matheson & Pyke should not be considered for selection going forwards, they offer very little in the immediate and nothing going forwards.Sanfran, Pugh played at left back last week at Spalding and was one of our better players albeit taking into account the level of the opposition (thought his red card at Spalding was also a bit harsh for what it’s worth)
I know you have a keen interest in the academy players, is Lobley currently injured? Always thought highly of him as someone who could make the step up, would he have made a better left back option last night?Fifty pence must watch the game from near my vantage point
“As a Scunthorpe United fan, I don’t expect success, I don’t go to a game expecting 3 points, but I do expect “something”.
But at the moment I don’t see “anything” that could provide hope.”There is nothing there at all, a defence that seems incapable of keeping clean sheets, more often than not giving ‘soft’ goals away. A midfield that lacks bite, creativity and even legs (how many times yesterday were we failing to keep midfield runners) and a forward line that looks like they could play until Christmas and struggle to have an effort on target let alone actually score. This is game after game, when the inevitable happens and we go down surely the head of scouting/ recruitment must resign? This squad is not and never was capable of keeping us up. So much for Will’s plan to get us back to the Championship!!

Given our current league position I would have expected to feel more critical of the players, certainly yesterday I felt as though it was a lack of quality rather than a lack of effort.
This season particularly we seem to be relying on a number of players being picked every week who in all reality should be no more than squad players, the standard of loan players brought in over the last few seasons has been shocking at best – it tells it’s own story that Scrimshaw was far and away the best of the 3 we’ve had from Bournemouth over the last 2 years!!
I don’t particularly want to mention any players by name but how much easier on the young lads coming through would it have been to integrate them into a side with a few experienced & quality players alongside them to talk them through games and ease them into league football. Whichever way I look at it, it keeps coming back to recruitment. Whether that ultimately falls at the door of Cox, Swann Jr. or Swann Sr?6 users thanked author for this post.
In truth the writing has been on the wall for a long time, Hill’s comments post match are only what the majority of us have been thinking for most / all of the season, the players just aren’t good enough.
I may be para-phrasing slightly but wasn’t something said by our chairman along the lines of “I’ll do what it takes to keep us up” not too long before the window opened???? What assurances were given to Hill, surely more than what he’s been given?
At what stage would Hill be tempted to offer his resignation?
21 games left of our football league lives, try to take what enjoyment you can out of it, it may be a while before we’re back.1 user thanked author for this post.
Not sure about the others but Hallam was presumably fit and available for selection as he was on the pitch and taking part in the warm-ups pre game, I assume he was the ‘19th man’ in case of last minute sickness / injury etc.
Toni Ameobi – can’t recall a worse player I’ve had the misfortune of watching turn out for us, it’s a long list but he’s definitely up there.
Disappointing today, I felt we edged the first half without really testing their keeper enough but second half was poor. Seemed quite happy in just keeping possession without any real idea on what to do with it, really laboured at times allowing them ample time to keep disciplined in their shape, their 2 centre halves won’t have much easier games all season then what they did today. Hackney played too deep to have an impact on the game, regularly picking the ball up on the half way line rather than in the pockets of space between their midfield and defence where he looked dangerous at Oldham, desperately need some creativity in midfield, missed Beestin today although he’s been a bit of a mixed bag this season overall. Not all doom and gloom but definitely a missed opportunity today to pick up points

1st half, lacked tempo and intensity which worried me given the ‘six pointer’ nature of the game but 2nd half was actually enjoyable, a more positive outlook to press higher up the pitch and looked to play some decent stuff at times. Bunn and Hippolyte impressive with their work rate and glimpses of quality in possession – once we got our house in order thought Oldham looked distinctly average and rarely troubled, fully expect some more hiccups on the way but signs of hope under Hill. Back it up with 4 points from the Northampton and Carlisle games, then let Hill (not Swann jr) do some business in January and who knows???
1 user thanked author for this post.
Yes.
Didn’t see Hill there but don’t know for certain, did see Russ Wilcox though, does anyone know what he is upto nowadays?
Wilson didn’t have a great game to be honest but I don’t intend that to be a criticism as such, he undoubtedly should have earned some game time earlier in the season judging by his pre-season performances. Not really sure where he would fit it with Hill’s very narrow midfield at the minute though?1 user thanked author for this post.
