True. Can’t afford a second permacrock.

Pearce on short term contract to add experience at CB I wouldn’t be averse to.

A bit of a Freudian slip there Mick.

Sutton ain’t here no longer, which is even harder to fathom out given that we have brought in several midfielders with less experience than Levi (who could also play RB of course).

Butroid will be the most experienced defender with 26 appearances and he’s not yet 22!

Hope I’m wrong but I’d say it was the club who are extremely naive.

We know we are threadbare and inexperienced in defence but let’s have a look at midfield.

Experience in Colclough, Eisa & Gilliead, fair enough. But then we have a host of similar, yet to prove themselves, youngsters. Dales, Hallam, Beestin, Vincent, Spence, Hornshaw and Pugh. Seven basically chasing one position. Surely it would have made more sense to cut that seven down to 3/4 and bring in a bit of experience.

Similarly the forwards. KvV is (was) our go to striker with McAtee his obvious replacement. But who partners him? Jarvis, Olomola, Green, Mooney, Silva? Again, seven players chasing two positions.

A balanced squad it ain’t. If Eisa was given shirt number 11 then I doubt we were looking to sell. So if the OP has any credence then perhaps it’s because the club has realised we have a platoon of rookies but no sergeant major!

    Saleable assets on standby?

    Indeed Mick.

And as Johnny Iron says – a bold move. Or rash gamble perhaps?

If anyone becomes the perceived weak link under them as ex footballers I hope they will see that and change personnel

They may well be unable to change the “weak link” personnel!

It was more of a worry when we kept doing well in the friendlies!!

The friendlies we have done well in (ie narrowly won) have been against U23 squads. In the two games against senior squads we have conceded seven goals!

Agree with BLT, defence looking shaky.

It’s not that. Friendly games are notoriously difficult to quantify. It’s the fact that the defence for our first meaningful fixture is likely to be: –

    Watson

    Rowe
    Cordner
    Bedeau
    Butroid

Young and hungry perhaps, streetwise and savvy, doubtful!

Said this on several threads, but if you have an inexperienced (or dodgy) keeper Then you need a commanding figure at CB.

If you have an inexperienced defence then you need a Murphy/Gilks style keeper.

    Currently we have neither.

Also the midfield has a bit of a lucky-bag feel to it with no one jumping out as a sure starter.

I’m not saying we haven’t signed some decent young talent but it still doesn’t look like a balanced squad. With KvV out for a while and Clarke and McGahey not having kicked a competitive ball there’s not a great deal of experience in the backs or CMF.

Still two and a half weeks to get it right but this has more the feel of an U23 team rather than a senior squad as was born out this evening.

    Hmmm! 4-0 defeat.

Anyone still think we don’t need an experienced campaigner in there?

For those who don’t know what this thread is about: –

“Journalist Max Bell recently approached the Club on Monday 17th August 2020 to ask if the Club Shop would stock and sell copies of his forthcoming book “Scunthorpe United F.C. 20 Legends”.

The Club agreed to Mr Bell’s request and were pleased to be able to support local enterprise, particularly where the subject matter was the rich history of Scunthorpe United Football Club.

Subsequent to the Club’s agreement with Mr Bell to stock and sell his book, Mr Bell, for reasons unknown to the Club, took to social media platforms and online newspaper platform to publish false information and offensive comments about the Club and its Chairman, Peter Swann.

The Club cannot and will not be seen to endorse or turn a blind eye to the use of any online medium for the purposes of abusing, harassing or negatively impacting upon others.

As a consequence of Mr Bell’s behaviour, the Club took the decision to withdraw its offer to stock and sell Mr Bell’s book.”

I’ve not seen Max Bell’s comments on social media but he must be either very naive or misguided.

I mean, you don’t go on Trip Advisor and slag off a restaurant then except a complementary bottle of wine on your next visit!

We have a prediction league for the PL in our local pub. I came joint last the season just finished!

The winner was a lady who knows nothing about football but wants to support the pub much like we are doing with IB. We have a default score (mine is 1-1) that is automatically entered against each fixture if you’re not in on a Friday to fill in your predictions.

In previous years Bru members have signed up but not made any predictions (or stopped/forgot) after a few weeks. If they had a default score repeated for each fixture then at least they would be involved to the end.

I have absolutely no problem with anyone who has supported the site by paying to join the prediction league entering 2-1, 1-2 or any other score. Yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice!

Not sure why it bothers you BS. You know damn well every L2 game won’t finish 2-1, so surely working out your own prediction gives you a better chance of success.

Born out by the fact that you won the bloody thing!

In recent days posters have commented on how Godden was poor for us but has been prolific elsewhere and that Hayesey is an Iron legend but will have been forgotten by Barnsley and Preston fans.

The question has been asked, “how long do you persist before the player needs to move on?”

UTI99 is right when he lists Johnstone, Goode & (possibly) Burgess. But he is wrong to think it was just the terrace fans and “keyboard warriors” knocking them back. Managers not playing them or dropping them for a favourite (or more expensive) squad member. Injuries. Formations. Tactics. All of these play their part.

The problem we have here is that this is such a key position (think of Klopp’s Liverpool pre Allison) so all eyes are on the lad. A young keeper needs an experienced CB in front of him. Young CBs need an experienced keeper behind them.

If PS has faith in Rory and sees Kelsey and Collins as adequate backup why were Eastwood and Lawlor loaned in last year?

Of course we all want to see OUR players develop and flourish but not at the expense of another relegation battle surely?

Why are some so obsessed with the age of a player?

Nowt to do with chronological age is it?

It’s to do with a mental strength that only comes with playing games at this level.

I don’t have to remind you of the “legend” status Cliff Byrne & Andy Butler built up in their first spell with the club. However when they played together 2003/04 we almost went out of the football league. Crosby came in and the rest is history.

Sure Pele won the World Cup at seventeen but he hadn’t just played a handful of games for Havant & Waterlooville!

Not ideal, looking towards a 21yo loanee to be your on the pitch leader.

Swann as good as admitted yesterday that Clarke’s appearances would be limited, so it’s a big ask for these young guys to have to mature PDQ.

That and the keeper situation are my only real concerns.

I back all in an Iron shirt. Just curious as to how Bournemouth have suddenly become our go-to club for loans. What happened to Everton, Man City & Chelsea?

And speaking of Chelsea, I see Ike Ugbo has wangled himself a European gap year!

Did he say that? That we aren’t looking for another keeper?

He said Rory had had some bad luck with injuries but that he (PS) wants him to become our #1. And that with Adam and Tom we had adequate back-up!

    Hmm!

Still the recruitment “committee” I/C of transfers. Mooney, Jarvis & Vincent had been “tracked” for over a year.

So about as fast as the Government’s App then!

In the podcast Charlie admitted he had made some bad mistakes in crucial games.

Unfortunately that’s what people remember. Let’s not forget that last August we we’re welcoming back Andy Butler to shore up the defence.

Players will have bodily contact which is rather more critical.

It’s the “excuse me, scuse me!” brigade that squeeze past you after twenty minutes, because they need the bog after having quaffed three pints pre-match, that concerns me. Those and the ones who head off for their pie and Bovril ten minutes before half time.

Think I’d prefer to stand when we’re allowed back in. At least you can move out of the way if you’re not comfortable with the lack of distancing.
