If we are going to play (at least) 3 centre backs and play with any kind of attacking intent what we need is 2 wing backs.
They are fundamental to the system and much as I like Denton and Barrows they are defensively minded and competent full backs. Defending most of the game with an occasional forage forward is fine if you are playing a back 4 but no use whatsoever in a back 5.
Denton is probably the best defensive full back at the club but has not got the engine or the skill set to be a wing back. Barrows has more energy but his final ball is not much better than his predecessor mullet man.
Pointed this out on here as soon as Butlers preferred (only) formation became apparent in the pre season friendlies.
In the very brief glimpses of Kelly that we have seen he looks to have a bit more to offer going forward so if Butler insists on the formation I would like to see him given a go on the left. On the right I would give Scales a run at wing back. Shrimpton or Brogan could take his midfield slot. You can always bring Denton and/or Barrows on to see a game out.
I didn’t like Roberts playing 10 but credit to him he shows signs of getting to grips with the position. We have the players at the club to win this league but the ones that were brought in to the club pre Butler were recruited with some variant of 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 in mind.
Other than Nicholson Butlers signings don’t seem suited to his formation either or they would be playing.
Not calling for Butlers head here but if he does not change his formation to suit the players he has or change his players to suit his formation then things will not go well for him.
While I’m at it substitutions in professional football should only be made to replace an injured player or to change a game in some way. Giving the lads some game time is for Sunday league – unless you have a 3 goal lead.

Difficult to play worse than last Saturday but we’re giving it a really good shot.
Any progress from today onwards means an extra midweek game.
What we don’t want is a draw.
Can’t place him, Cass.
Does he have a physical presence? He is no Bish Les. Think more a Scales but with the ability to constantly pass to someone in the same coloured shirt.
Looked ready for an EFL or certainly a National League loan to me.
Really like Evans but playing him in midfield was a calculated risk that failed. The game passed him by because he is not mobile enough to play there.
He is also comfortably the best passer out of defence of our 4 centre backs so we missed him there. Some would say he is the only CB that can pass well from the back.
Early games from Nicholson had me wondering why he was not playing in the EFL. The last 3 or 4 games have demonstrated why. His passing is really poor. Hey ho that’s why he is playing in the NLN.
In our early games we refused to let direct physical teams suck us into playing their game. Today we totally got sucked into it and came off second best.
Butler in his interview said that was not the intention but his team selection suggests otherwise. Hope him and the team learn from it.
Have to praise Beestin today. He worked tirelessly to try and make something out of the hopeless punts forward nearly making something happen from 3 or 4 of them.
I do agree with Butler that it’s not the end of the world. We’re top of the league after 9 games. We all make mistakes and have off days. Championship winning sides learn from them and come back stronger next game.
Final word on the Scarborough away end. They have a nerve selling 700 away tickets knowing 50% have little chance of seeing anything other than brief glimpses of the game. Nearly as bad as Boston last season.

When you take the field with a keeper and 6 defenders it doesn’t leave much room for footballers.
Game so far reflects that.

2-1 to the Iron.
Roberts and one of the centre backs to score.
Does either club have some connection to a “celebrity”?
Often influences matches chosen for cover.
So the bit about FA rules I read somewhere was bullshine.
I agree then the club got that one wrong.
Is there any other kind of TV news Bill?

Agreed. Rishi received more than Starmers freebies most weeks on helicopter rides.
Funnily enough they didn’t warrant a mention on Sky News let alone the 10 minute slot they just spent on Starmers footy and Taylor Swift tickets. The righteous indignation would have been better focused on how tickets to half a dozen Arsenal games cost in excess of £30k.
Never a good time for injuries but Carlton’s could hardly have been timed worse.
He would have had 2 full games to get match sharp and been available for Scarborough should Whitehall not make it.
Agree with that Awaywego. The relatively few kids I did overhear at the end of the game were really excited by seeing their team score 5.
Someone mentioned FA rules about pricing not allowing kids for free. Is the FA really that stupid?
If it’s not true the club have missed a trick here.
Think anything close to 2,000 is a result.
You would hope whatever team Butler puts out should be good enough to get a result on the pitch.
He probably won’t play as well Tuesday as he prefers the green green grass of home.

Thankfully Scarborough suffered a similar fate today so now face a tricky away game Tuesday.
Scarborough were away today, their replay on Tuesday is at home
Apologies senior moment.
Ironawe not saying every match doesn’t matter but we’re not going to win the FA Cup. The team we had out today, had they played well we’re good enough to beat a team from 2 leagues below. Those 7 players that don’t normally start need games which it sounds like they demonstrated by their performance today.
Compared to getting out of this league making a few quid out of a cup run is an irrelevance and probably would end up being a distraction.
Butler picked exactly the right team today to give players minutes who are an injury or a suspension away from being needed in games that really matter. He probably hoped a team with 7 back up players would have enough to see off a side 2 divisions below us and I suspect he is quietly furious that they were not up to the task today.
I would put the same 11 out to start on Tuesday.

Looked decent rather than spectacular in pre season. Played well when he came on second half at Brackley but has been fairly anonymous in his other outings.

Or we could just ask Rene to behave.
I’ve come off X for the third and final time. Didn’t take Musk long to turn it into that cesspit.
Almost makes you miss the days when we really had things to moan about.
And his marauding high speed runs down the right wing. Mullet flowing they started off exciting the crowd until we all realised it inevitably would end with a misplaced shot/cross or a pass to someone in a different coloured shirt.
I have no clue as to what Hilton’s financial plan or ambitions were but it seems beyond doubt to me that he wanted footballing success.
He got some of his football decisions wrong whereas he seemed to get all of his financial and communication decisions wrong.
Dean has proved himself a successful manager of part time football teams.
The primary skill required is spotting good footballers and convincing them to join your club. Having an owner prepared to recompense players over the odds for the level does simplify this somewhat. Other than deciding your formation tactical nous is not really required as you cannot drill different formations in 2 90 minutes training sessions a week particularly when you have to use most of that time for fitness work.
If we assume Dean had a significant say in recruitment under Hilton then he didn’t do too bad. 9 of them are making our unbeaten starting 11.
Managing full time professional teams to success requires a whole bunch of additional (and more difficult) skills.
Butler has spent over 20 years in the full time game most of it in leadership roles, captain, coach etc.
Dean prior to coming here had never been involved in full time professional football.
Dean isn’t a crap manager he was just the wrong manager for the job Hilton brought him in for.

7 games in and a long way to go but loving how we have turned up in every game so far.
Credit to Butler and his team.
Jimmy Spencer was excellent in our home game against Curzon last season.
A much better display than any he managed in an Iron shirt.
The “banter” is a bit forced but they are not really aiming at my demographic which is fine.
The club is big enough for more than 1 podcast and both help in developing and engaging the fan base. Both do a great job.

Tight defences so far. Might only be one goal in it.
I don’t think they will find the new fit and aggressive Iron to be the soft touch we were last season.Maxi will probably score it.
300 away and not many more home fans. Supposed to be working tonight so have to make do with the stream.
UTI
Not disputing any of that Sidy and I was posting about the Swann and Hilton disasters with the best of them.
The fraudster has been gone for nearly a year and we seem to have found a professional manager so maybe time to let it go is all I’m suggesting.
Whilst never ever forgetting, of course.
