The downside, Rene, is that we have conceded a goal!
We probably deserved to edge it but there were a dozen appalling passes in there.
How do Americans spell their yewww sound of applied disgust? (I accept that my attempt here may be a long way off target.)
Second cousin to a ‘yuk’.
Appreciated.
My suspicions about Scales have now been laid aside. I am truly beginning to see the player he can and should be.
Whitehall my MOTM.
SO much to like; so much calmness; so much intelligence; so much professionalism.
No dropping back to ‘protect’ a 1-0 lead.
Yes, Andy. More of the same, please.2 users thanked author for this post.
He’s mid 40s. No.
An important game to WIN!

Ah.
Maybe just a tad naive?
Really appreciate this.
Thanks Matt – thanks to all who participated.Too unsure that Chorley/NM football would bring that outcome.
I tend to agree but am not ready to fully endorse AB. Don’t want to see too many games like Chorley and NM.
3 games like SS or Brackley every four games or so and my grin will turn magically into a broad smile.Carlton is short of real match fitness. Today will have helped.
Evans my MOTM. Great forward play by Whitehall.4 users thanked author for this post.
SOOOO professional!!
Super, AB!3 users thanked author for this post.
I looked again at the goal conceded on Saturday. The defence was appallingly stretched and nobody seemed to notice. The goal was an absolute shocker! (Just as I’d remembered – but worse.)
I was giving Max K MOTM on the opening day – nowhere close against Chorley.
Evans is good at reading situations and has leadership qualities – he will probably have to be back today, irrespective as to whether Boyce is fit or not.Glad to see Denton in the first half. The very decent player is coming back – albeit slowly.
I am struggling to see any real shape on the pitch at the moment.
(A lot of supporters must have watched NM game – they didn’t turn up!)Playoffs at worst.
My take is that we did see decent enough football in the Brackley game but precious little last night.
Marine – we did a job.I recall NM’s three on two attack mid-second half. A fantastic piece of alertness as Whitehall thundered back to help the defence out of desperate trouble.
Hit the woodwork twice and scored a penalty. A cat’s whisker away from a hat trick. His general play was better than Saturday.
Drop him?1 user thanked author for this post.
How many passes went astray?
How little movement off the ball?
How many moves with ten passes? Or eight? Or even six? Four anyone?
Where had the all the superb ‘ball stealing’ at Brackley gone?
Throws were whistling in towards the penalty spot – did our big guys get to them first? Not very often.
Long balls are a part of football but lumping it up-field in a constant hit and hope was dreadful to watch and will cost us many points this season.
I do not think that you can easily trot out five subs in fairly quick succession and keep the team’s balance.
It was horrid to watch but a good way to wipe hundreds off our home gates.
We certainly did not deserve three points.1 user thanked author for this post.
But did Needham tire?
A tactical mess.
A top ref. 8/10 (7 if the pen was duff.)
5/10 for a good number of players.
Loss of shape when the subs came in – it nearly cost us.
Okay, we hit the woodwork twice but their build up was generally better than ours.
So many hoofs upfield – I was embarrassed.
Had a Sheff Utd fan round to watch it – even with free whiskey here, he left with 30 minutes to spare.1 user thanked author for this post.
Was our disallowed goal offside? I couldn’t tell but I’ve heard mixed opinions on it.
Besides, Haaland may not want to come.
Fishburn is young, raw and pretty inexperienced. He should not really be starting games when there are better and more experienced players.
Saturday was perfect – came off the bench and scored.
He may well get starts as the season progresses – when we have no real alternative.2 users thanked author for this post.
Drop Clunan??
Six goals in two games so let’s change it round? Huh?
Scales lost possession 8 times in the first half. There were several more at the start of the second then, in the latter stages, he seemed to really get it together.
Denton was about 85% of the player he was a year ago. Let us just hope this is no more than the process of building match fitness.
Seeing Will Evans in CM really made me think of a way we could make 4-4-2 or 4-1-3-2 work like a dream. Maybe he lacks a bit of guile for CM but would replace that with his huge presence and great ball winning abilities – add in his awesome long passing skills …
Carlton may have to ‘start from the bench’ next Saturday. You cannot drop either forward.
I think we’d have drawn that match last season. Fitness at least 10% better. Most Fletcher goals came from passes out of CM to a (presumably) predetermined spot behind the defence. A burst of pace through the backline and he ran onto the ball – straight thru on goal. Very good at one-on-ones.
It just kept on happening. -
