Absolutely Daz, I reckon all fans should be demanding this sort of cap at all levels of the game. It’s so much better for the game.
This is great news for lower league football, it should make for a much more level playing field, where clubs can’t just buy success by living beyond their means. It also dramatically reduces the risks of club going bust. I can’t see why anyone would be against this, my only concern is the one mentioned above about clubs being relegated being given time to “adjust”. I don’t agree with that at all, they need to ensure they can hit the salary cap if they are relegated by planning in advance.
This could be the first step in an overhaul of how the game is governed in this country. I just hope there’s more to come.
With no revenue Portsmouth have stated they are losing £700,000 a MONTH !!!
I saw that, presumably they must be losing out on more than just ticket revenue – are they really earning £700k from an average of 2 home game a month? That would be £8,000,000 a season for home game, which seems a lot!
The biggest problem with the current situation is the big payoffs in managers contracts. I believe that option should be removed. So many crappy managers coming in and treating the Iron like a cash cow.
They start off taking the job seriously, but that doesn’t last long enough. Getting fired and getting the golden handshake should absolutely be taken off the table…
I presume this is a wind-up?
I thought it was going to be news about a player from the 1950s with a name like that!
I’m not sure how attractive a job it would be to a manager looking for his first job, after all the odds aren’t exactly in our favour for the coming season.
It would be easy to see a scenario where a young manager lasts only 6 months here and struggles to get another job.
A convicted domestic abuser? No thank you.
I’m always torn on these matters, I believe people deserve a second chance but at the same time I don’t really feel comfortable with someone like that representing my club. I felt the same with Jordan Robertson.
Might not even get to play there, apparently their first few home games might have to be paid elsewhere as they have to rip up their 3G pitch because they’re not allowed in the Football League.
I meant that I hadn’t heard if the club was offering cash refunds on unused season tickets, rather than a discount off a new one, which many people might not be able to afford these days.
Dawson and Wilcox were only labelled as caretaker or temporary to be fair.
Reasonably long-term caretakers – not like they just had one or two games. Dawson had, what, best part of a dozen to take us down?
McCall was only here for about 6 months and didn’t get a pre-season to get things in place. I’d argue that’s pretty hard done-by.
I went there years back it was so cold I watched the second half from the warmth of the bar with a pint. I’m not sure I’d want promotion if I had to give up that option as a Harrogate supporter!
Who won?
Chelsea lost, that’s the important thing to know.
Pretty good game I thought, all things considered, made even better by Chelsea losing.
Wow, only our 6th managerial appointment in 2 years, I’m sure it’ll be a good one, just like the other 5!
Yeah failed. He didn’t get sacked for succeeding did he.
He lost his bottle and got exposed as someone with no plan B.
What did he got after promotion? 8 games? He barely had a chance to get going. I thought that was an embarrassing sacking but of course nothing compared to Alexander.
Just someone competent who hasn’t already failed at the job before and shown zero signs of improvement in his second try.
Failed? He literally got us promoted.
I’m not sure some people on here are living in the real world.
Don’t get me wrong, I think an appointment in the Adkins mould could potentially be brilliant for the club to generate some “buzz”. Even though I think his time has probably passed, bringing Mark Lillis back as Wilcox’s assistant could potentially be a really shrewd PR move and one which could get people excited again.
But are we in a position to be picky? I’m not sure we are….
To be fair, I’ve met fans and they’re probably right!
Although they should definitely listen to me….
It doesn’t matter though does it Mick? We’ve got Wilcox, a man who has already got us promoted out of this division once, and who clearly isn’t going anywhere.
We’ve had managerial changes in each of the last 3 seasons I think (who knows if we’re still paying any of them off) and it hasn’t helped. Who are we going to attract to this job? At least we’ve got someone who seems to care about the club.
What’s your point? The club would make more money in the Champions League but getting there ain’t so easy.
I’m also not sure your sums add up, looking at the club’s accounts, the revenue from ticket income was £914k last season (in League One) and £1.01 million the year before (possibly helped by being in the play-offs?). Last time we were in League Two, the accounts showed £936k back in 2014.
Not much of a difference there.
I think the club could definitely be doing a bit more off the pitch in terms of trying to build bridges with the fans, promote the club in innovative ways and to make sure we have plenty of supporters when football does eventually restart.
But equally I don’t think many fans realise just how serious the current situation could be for a club like ours. Demanding new signings is ridiculous. Moaning about having a manager who isn’t exciting enough for you is laughable.
I still don’t see how this will work, unless you can get several thousand people in the grounds. How are clubs going to afford to take players off furlough if they can’t generate enough through the turnstiles to pay the wages?
I do not buy anything on-line. I trade in local shops because they employ local people. That local person could be someone you know.
I agree with this for the big online retailers but there are plenty of small businesses for whom an online presence is absolutely vital and will have been a complete God-send for many of them in the recent crisis.
Cheers Steve, I hope you’re not giving them too much credit!
Dunston UTS? Is that a renaming of Dunston Fed Brewery? I was a couple of games there as a student while friends were wasting their lives in the Metrocentre!
I just think it’s such a shame that they are leaving Griffin Park, particularly without a farewell, but also because it would be great to see a proper ground like that in the Premier League. Terracing behind the goal and presumably cramped dressing rooms! See what the big clubs make of that….
Likely to be keen…. a couple of qualifiers there!
Definitely! That would be very funny.
Personally, I would rather see Brentford go up but I guess we need the money from West Brom getting promoted!
