The supporters I’m thinking of would probably accuse you of being holier than thou, and I wouldn’t argue with them.

Is there a generic Spurs, Man U, Arsenal fan that I’m unaware of?

The answer to this is definitely “yes”. In normal times, they’re found in your local pub on a Sunday afternoon wearing the latest polyester offering of their chosen club and shouting loudly at a screen that can’t hear them. They may also ask you who you support and when you reply “Scunthorpe”, they will ask “do you not support a big club too?”.

Again, sweeping generalisations. Of course there are premier league fans like that but there are many others who aren’t. I know a number who are born and bred Liverpool, Man U and Spurs fans who are not like that at all. I’ve met many on trains on the way back from Scunny matches over the years and I’ve not met one like that. If you want to laugh at those fans in the pubs you mention fine, I get that, but for every one of them there is a decent supporter.

Another way of looking at it is if you supported one of these clubs and did, along with thousands of others, show that empathy and willingness to help smaller league clubs, to little effect in the face of uncaring and profit driven owners. Do you think it would be fair to have others laughing at you now that your club owner is doing this? Is there a generic Spurs, Man U, Arsenal fan that I’m unaware of?

You appear to be suffering from inverted snobbery and tarring all supporters of these clubs with the same brush IMO. ‘Looking down their noses’, ‘not batted an eyelid’ ‘grateful for the crumbs..’, etc. Sweeping generalisations, sensationalism and inferiority complex in my opinion. I’m pretty sure the majority of indigenous supporters of these clubs are not the villains you want to paint them as. But hey, just my opinion. You carry on with your ‘us and them’ malarkey. Afraid to tell you though, it ain’t quite like that.

I don’t think laughing at fans of these clubs who neither wished for the Premier League or the proposed Super League is very clever tbh. What’s funny about having the owner of the club you support taking this action and foisting it upon you? A bit of empathy wouldn’t go amiss. It’s not so black and white.

And why not post it in the match day thread like Matt wants people to use to save disc space.

I can answer that: because the poster has an axe to grind but the axe is blunt.

Except they were pre-Swann. What about in his tenure? Not that many and not to their high levels. Forwards in particular.

Sort of contradicted yourself there awaywego. You implied we gave Godden and Wooton plenty of time and chances but then knock the fans not being tolerant. You can’t have it both ways. Anyway, it still comes back to big question marks over why these players spent so long here and achieved little but flourished elsewhere. And it’s little to do with the fans IMO.

Big guffaw at the thought of the current SUFC doing either of those! Loss leaders? Too sensible!

I’d laugh briefly if Grimsby went out the league again but be disappointed that we’d lost a local derby and our biggest rivals, and the revenue.

Agree with most of that Alcy, except the bit where you put your tin hat on… ‘media-led pandemic’.

Not disputing anything Alcy says or has said before on the matter and never have done. But if anyone thinks there hasn’t been plenty of others saying similar things for years then they’ve got selective memories. Thing is, quite a few of those posters aren’t around anymore so it’s easy to forget. I saw someone posted something about needing a marketing drive to get fans back but that it probably won’t happen. Indeed, pigs might fly. The probability of it not happening speaks volumes.

I don’t see eye to eye with awaywego on numerous matters, as he knows, but to label him a club stooge is frankly ridiculous.

I’d be pleasantly surprised if the approach to this close season is anything more than the same old same old.

I was okay with Hurst. I thought we were heading in the right direction and he was getting the best out of most the players. I’d like to know the full truth behind his exit. Don’t suppose we’ll ever know. Anyway, all history now.

Rather than touting your conspiracy theory (well BS’s originally-you and a few others have simply joined in like the sheep you profess not to be), I challenge you to name one poster of this mythical ‘6’ that doesn’t or hasn’t criticised the team, manager or club in recent years. Name one poster that bigs up ‘the whole debacle’.

‘Plenty of workers have been sacked for homophobic and racist comments and lost their livelihood just because there footballers it shouldn’t make them exempt.’

Agree with that sentiment. I think a year ban makes more sense though. Allow an opportunity for education and reform?

Which pubs did you go in? The ones near the ground in Edgeley? Granted some are rough. The layouts are a lot to do with their age.

What a load of tripe awaywego. I lived in Stockport for a while. The pubs and the people are barely any different from what you’d find in Crosby. If you go nowadays, particularly round the old part of town, the pubs are probably better than Scunny’s.

Anyway, good luck to Paddy. At his age I trust he’s got himself a nice contract in the latter stages of his career.
