Gallimore the best for me. Don’t need to wait for him to develop physically .. he’s already a beast. Confident and reasonable skill level and decent positional sense. Cribb and Moore Billam .. both have good futures but a bit behind Gallimore. A good experienced central mid to add in and I won’t be too unhappy with midfield. A pity General Grant wasn’t a couple of years younger.

Frank Burrows, Les!! Thanks for jogging my memory. Right up there with Crosby, Wallace and two or three more whose names might float into my consciousness at some point later on. Frank Burrows was never off his game. Nothing fancy, decent skill level without being spectacular … but game in, game out I reckon you’d find no opposition player who fancied it.
A real favourite in my earliest days at the Old Showground. No messing with him. Oh for a Noddy Neale and a Derek Hemstead in the current set up. .

Thanks for posting that article,Deerey. Superbly written and the section you quoted absolutely nails it.
I was thinking of starting a post earlier this week but didn’t quite get there. The essence of it would have been my genuine and deep sadness to realise that the ‘chain’ of my roughly 60 years of being proud of being an Iron supporter has been broken. I used to instinctively grab my scarf when off for an Autumn or Winter walk in the Dales or wherever. I used to adjust my Scunny ‘ski hat’ (??) so that the badge was always showing at the front. Not any more .. at least not at this moment.
The club has lost its link to supporters and to the community. The healthy culture of the previous years of Laws, Adkins and Wharton et al has been allowed to erode and fracture. Our part in the promotion drama of the final day makes me carry more shame than pride. I hope I live to see my old sense of being part of something humble, honest and clean restored.4 users thanked author for this post.
Thanks for the article Deerey. A sad state of affairs. I wonder if there is some residual hostility amongst the police on the continent surrounding UK fans in general and, re Heysel etc, Liverpool fans in particular. Who knows. Whatever was going on … the article demands some kind of enquiry by EUFA and an explanation from the French authorities.
Some of the derisory comments above are pretty small minded. One thing to have your team preference and loyalty … quite another to rush to judgement without knowing the facts and appear to be gloating at the misfortune of others.( Side issue. Couldnt agree more IA as regard Alexander-Arnold on the evidence of last night. Havent seen enough of him on a consistent basis to know how his defensive game really matches his attacking side …but last night he was exposed and exploited several times defensively. In the first half he and Salah were repeatedly giving the ball away. Salah is too good not to impress even when he is slightly off and I suppose you could argue that he was trying to be creative. I suspect that if just one of the two were really on their game then that would have been the difference last night.)

Leadership involves communication, motivation and honesty, UTI. Give the fans some honest answers as to what the vision for the future is. I travel a round trip of nearly 150 miles to watch the Iron. There’s a financial commitment before I even factor in my season ticket. If negotiations are too sensitive to be disclosed at this stage then somebody at the club needs to at least say so and ask for patience. If you think that evidence of commitment is needed UTI then supporters can point to the fact that we were not playing to an empty stadium for most of last season. Look at the stats on what we had to endure!! I demonstrate my commitment at this time …. by saying that I will cough up when I have a better idea of what I am buying into .. or that I am certain that my investment won’t be liquidated.

IA and Les sum it up. Even the most ‘agreeable’ fans have to draw a line somewhere. Of course there are a range of opinions on how we have arrived at where we are. Alcy never bought in from the start and now feels totally vindicated. That’s one end of the spectrum. Others were inclined to a more generous take on Peter Swann and chose to keep going back to the well of ‘benefit of the doubt.’ That well has now run dry … except for a handful of what might be termed ‘pathological’ optimists. We don’t know why Mr Swann has so dramatically plugged the plug over the last year or two. Maybe he has just lost interest. Maybe someone else has had a strong say in where the family fortune is invested. Maybe Covid has contributed to a re think. Perhaps he has come to the humble opinion that he’s misjudged his capabilities as a Football Club Chairman. It’s not even impossible that he intends to sell us down the river and recoup at least some of his losses using the ground. Most supporters are hurting and in limbo. I am hoping that Mr Swann will be prepared to at least ‘share’ the financial hit of losses incurred under his leadership and sell the club and assets at a price which attracts a buyer. This would no doubt be painful for him but would be an indication that he has taken some responsibility for what has occurred under his Chairmanship. Perhaps clauses in the sale could ensure in some way that new owners don’t profiteer on the clubs assets by his ‘generosity’ in the sale. I for one can’t bring myself to shell out for something that has no certainty or clarity about it and so, like most I suspect, we are left watching and waiting.

Glad to brighten your day, Deerey. We need cheering up. (As you know … that WAS me being restrained.)

NI (Thatcher in the 80s) and IA ‘The example is set by people at the very top. Boris Johnson hang your fat head in shame but of course he doesn’t do shame or honesty. Down the shit pan we go.’
Hey guys. This looks opportunistic to me. There’s no ‘non football’ now so I’d best be brief. I think these statements are superficial and simplistic … at the risk of offending , maybe even cheap shots. My analysis is that we are increasingly moving towards a society where words like shame and honesty are devoid of meaning. Good and bad, right and wrong imply an ideal … and we are starting to feel the impact of the erosion of Judaea- Christian foundations and man’s attempts to generate his own morality. Rising suicide, multiple gender possibilities .. ‘cake’ the latest I see … epidemics of anorexia/bulimia, the concept of marriage gutted, addictions proliferating. No wonder drink and drug fuelled individuals who have never been encouraged to grow character … who have never been told that there is a character to grow … will manifest the type of behaviour we are seeing. We have sown the wind … now we reap the whirlwind. Praying for a re-calibration of society for the health and good of all. It may well affect the ballot box .. but sure as hell won’t begin there.

I’ve seen Nutall’s apology. Exactly what was required in my opinion. A repeated apology, no hiding behind excuses but explains his emotions, a statement of intent to do better. As I said before … if all that was forthcoming then … forgive, forget, move on.

I had a gangly 17 year old Ray Clemence in mind watching Foster. Not sure if it was his debut (but think it was) … a 7 -1 defeat at Grimsby. An awful night. Any other posters there? If Foster is only half as good as Ray then we have a real find.
I get your point. Maybe I’m just fed up of race seeming to be the front and centre trigger in every issue and discussion at present. It even now threatens to dominate this thread. The merest speculative hint sets everyone off. I suspect that a small percentage of vile individuals at the game are racist and would be willing to include it in their abusive repertoire if they thought their would be no consequences. Maybe some did in their response to Joe Nuttall. Not amongst those near me who were on the receiving end of Joe’s gesture though. For me the eagerness to raise the issue has become totally overblown and will, unless contained, prove to be counter productive and divisive across society.

Methinks he doth protest too much.
I was just to one side of the group that drew the response from Nuttall. Everyone was groaning at the way he failed to notice two players superbly placed for a pass and tap in. Instead he opted to have a go himself and fluffed it. Given the previous missed opportunities it is understandable that fans would be frustrated. Half a dozen near me told him to switch on and open his eyes or words to that effect. I don’t like to see players pilloried or even harshly criticised but these supporters had paid their money and were entitled to offer their views and express themselves. There was NO racism involved. ( And if you weren’t there Siderite then maybe pulling out the ‘ever so virtuous’ racism speculation should have been left to those who were). What Joe did was totally unprofessional …. and maybe an expression of his own frustration with himself as much as anyone. There should be a fulsome apology and explanation of his failure before he ever plays for us again … but if that happens then fans should forgive, forget and everyone move on.

Steve Deere in the Millwall FA cup win that set us up for Hillsborough. I can still picture the goal and the slightly nervous crowd reaction as there was a knot of Millwall crew sounding off in the Donny Road.

A bad idea. Our supporters have made their feelings known in various ways according to their differing dispositions. I dont accept that we have taken this horror show without a murmur. Many have stopped going … a very effective way of expressing displeasure. Some padlocked the gates. Many have booed, chanted their feelings or displayed customised banners. Some lobbed tennis balls and ran around the goalmouth. I’m pretty sure that Season ticket sales are showing that many are not having any more of it until we see real change. Peter Swann’s decisions over the last three or four weeks leave me in doubt that he knows exactly how the fans are feeling. I’m not at all sure that sitting in the centre circle, with possible sanctions carried over, would be of any use even though it may be a way for some to vent their frustration. I have a dream that this will all be irrelevant … because new owners are introduced to the fans at the final game, they are a consortium with a bit of finance, the ground and surrounds are back with us and a golden future beckons. Please!!

April 20, 2022 at 5:30 pm in reply to: Les – The Guy Who Attempts Optimism Until Reality Finally Kicks In. #236151I like your thinking,Les. A bit surprised that you missed out Gallimore from your ‘shoo in list’. He has coped ok playing at CB … but really looks the part in his true position at Centre Midfield. He’s a bit of a brute physically too which always helps and he ain’t gonna get smaller in the close season. I would put Gallimore, Rowe and O’Malley as potential regular starters and Moore-Bilham, Wilson and Lewis as not too far behind…. certainly squad standard. Not to forget Pugh who still fits the young ‘un category and has a fair bit of League experience. I’d like to see us try to keep Delaney and pair him with a solid CB who we’re prepared to pay decent wages to. Defensively I’d also shell out good wages to a versatile full back. After Saturday I’d definitely try to keep Feeney who was up there as a candidate for MOM. Lots of skill, looked interested and lasted the pace ok. I’d want us to pay good wages to a proven midfield general … a pity Grant is a couple of years too old. Its up front that we need to start from scratch. Invest any spare money/wages on two strikers who are the right age and have decent records at League Two/Nat league level. Maybe another winger if we cqn … is there a cut price Cleveland out there?
Thanks IA. Its just that I noticed you mention the Donald quite alot whenever the opportunity arises. If you dont believe that Uncle Joe ‘lies to the US public and the rest of the world on a regular basis’ then you ain’t been paying attention. Thats my opinion …but at least I know we have the same one about Mr Swann.
IA said ‘Narcissists are never sorry, they don’t understand the terminology, their brains aren’t wired that way. EG Donald Trump’
Id nearly forgotten about him until you brought him up,IA. Do you think about him alot? Thank goodness the US and the World now have honest Uncle Joe, family and friends running the free world.
I saw David Sloans hat trick. Also 7-1 thrashing on an early season evening.
Ah well! Drew the second half. And Harrogate and FGR results make us a bit more respectable I suppose.
Reading on the BBC it sounds like the Alamo. ‘Orient hit the post …. shot just off target … chance narrowly wide ….Orient hit the bar … another Orient attack … woodwork again etc etc If it stays 3 -0 Im a happy bunny.
Siderite said: ‘Johnson, likeable? etc etc’
Someone must have liked him at some point. Mayor of London. Prime Minister. Obviously things emerge and perspectives change … but ‘likeable’ is such a vague and especially subjective term. For example I quite ‘like’ the bumbling, manipulative, biffing, bonking, ‘I’ve never done my homework and am not starting now’ old buffoon …. but thats not the same as trusting him to run the country. The alternatives offered … Jezzer and Sir Keir … would you want to have a few pints and a laugh with them? ( oh… non football!) errrr …’would you rather sit next to them on a coach to watch us at Solihull Moors or would you prefer Boris?
Thanks for this, Pat. Watching it the thought occurred to me …’How can you feel so much pride and joy AND terrible pain all at the same time?’ Seeing those clips of players over three or four years I was struck, setting aside the truly gifted players, by the sheer number of men of character and leadership in those squads. Oh for a Richard Hinds or Butler or Mirf over the last few years … let alone a Steve Foster or Crozzer. Oh for a Barraclough or Cleveland or Sharp or Cliffie… or Murphy. True professionals who drove themselves and those around them to go where they really should have had no expectation to be. And the thing is … I am now recalling other names who should have been on that list … Hooper, Williams, McCann etc etc etc

I’m not clutching at those straws NI. I wish we’d been playing Burton, Accrington and Morecambe this year over Swindon, Tranmere and Brad City 😔😔

Disappointed. A non event. What I wanted to hear … though didn’t necessarily expect … was that Lee Turnbull was coming in as the first stage of new ownership. What I also wouldn’t mind hearing is why it was ok to throw money around six or seven years ago but not in these last few. Maybe it’s personal circumstances or maybe it’s the humbling realisation that there is only so much that money can achieve and even that is limited by wrong assumptions. That admission would take humility. Probably the biggest omission is how he sees the value of the club to potential new owners and whether the supporter’s anxieties about the club’s main assets ie stadium and surrounds are ‘groundless.’ If this issue was clearly addressed ie ‘I will not be using the value of the ground to offset the losses I incurred in running the club and this is how I intend to ensure that this primary asset remains with the club after I am gone’ … then I would have been much happier.

We’ve said why several times,Awaywego. There’s only so many times you can explain something.
Needs must, I guess. Pugh injured. Perry awol. Beestin long Covid. Grant suspended. Maybe with Grant back he’ll get his rest?
