The similarities in both our clubs fall from grace and mismanagement are uncanny.
I actually thought we had the worst chairman in history with Fenty until Swann outdid him.
Relegation from the championship to the national league for the first time in our history but not content with that our self proclaimed saviour managed to do it twice !
Like Swann he blamed the fans for not turning up despite cutting the budget every season and signing dross players and employing poor managers without due diligence .
What sticks in my mind is an interview with Swanny on humberside after the Alex may fiasco last season when Fenty was going to let a convicted fraudster invest in the club .
Swanny got mad and said don’t you dare compare me to Fenty I’m nothing like him .
He’s done exactly the same , if not worse ,resigned from being chairman to take the heat off despite being the owner and still making all the decisions , stopped putting money in and insisted his loans will never be recalled because he loves the club and will leave it in a better position than when he took over .
He even resorted to using Fenty’s common phrase of we’ve not had much “football fortune” as though success is just a matter of luck and not long term planning , strategy and good management .
It took us a long time and a lot of protests to get him out , we had the apologists like uptheiron99 on here standing by him and saying we wouldn’t have have a club if it wasn’t for him putting money in , but like Swann he was paying for his own mistakes .
The new owners had to pay fentys loans off on takeover , despite him insisting they were benign and he wouldn’t call them in . At least he didn’t mortgage our ground though ,the land isn’t worth as much as yours or he probably would have !
Your in a dark place at the minute , we’ve been there but things will get better if you get rid of Swann .
We’ve found an extra 2000 disillusioned fans coming back this season after the ousting of Fenty despite a pretty average campaign in the national league.
The new owners aren’t going to throw money at it , they are just trying to run the club in the right way . We now have hope for the first time in many years .
You’re our closest and biggest rivals but I would hate to see you go under, we are all football fans after all.Total of 33 users thanked author for this post. Here are last 20 listed.
Didn’t realise that Vose only played twice for you MK, he came as billed as a star signing for us, although at the time it was probably a sign of how far we had fallen ! As you said he looked like he couldn’t be arsed from day one !
Amond is still a legend at Blundell Park for firing us back into the league last time we were down here . Unfortunately he left as our former chairman only offered him a one year deal after scoring 30 goals in a season for us. The fishy has had a thread every pre season since ,clamouring for us to re-sign him . Most town fans now think he’s past his best and probably not a signing for a team aiming to finish in the top 5.
He’s a class player though . Great touch , doesn’t score great goals more of a fox in the box who has a knack for being in the right place at the right time .
Although his record wasn’t great at Exeter , he was mainly used as a back up in a promotion chasing side and most of his appearances were off the bench .
I’m sure at this level if you could get 30-35 games out of him he’d get you 15 goals. His game doesn’t rely on pace so age shouldn’t be a problem so long as he can stay fit.
Don’t take my word for it though , players who were fantastic at one club don’t always fit in at another team . Woolford and Vose mentioned in some of your posts are an example .Good players for you but absolute dog doo for us and the reverse with Macatee who has been far and away our best player this season .Away we go , it was never my intention to wind anyone up or belittle you . If you read my original post I actually said we are two similar clubs who have had similar rises and falls from grace during my life time and both been shafted by a very poor chairman.
As some of your posters have mentioned above coming to Blundell Park as a neutral during our better days, I to have attended glanford park during your good years to watch good football. Always in the away end though!
As our nearest rivals I’ll always want us to finish above you and beat you in every match we play. I’m always up for a bit of banter and light hearted digs but always with respect and would never want to see you go under .
If you don’t get rid of Swann and you organise a proper protest next season I would gladly come down to your place and stand in solidarity with you, as I think any true football fan should. Football is for the fans , there are far too many clubs who have been destroyed by egotistic chairman looking to make a few quid . Apart from us and yourselves Darlington , Bury and Stockport spring to mind .
I can’t really take the P out of you for being relegated into a league we are already in, when it comes to mismanagement and the national league we’ve read the book, seen the film and worn the T-shirt !6 users thanked author for this post.
The standard of the refs in this league are probably worse than you can imagine .
As are some of the grounds and the standard of football on show. Most teams with the exception of 3 or 4 of the bigger ex league clubs will bring away fans numbering in the tens rather than the hundreds . That’s probably one of the main things that will hit your income stream .
However we are both where we are . One things for sure though if we don’t go up ,Blundell Park will be a sell out against you lot , and Glandford Park not far off either . We could sell as many tickets as you give us. Before some one points it out, I’m well aware it’s not Glanford Park anymore , but that’s the name I’ve always known it as before it was renamed after one mans vanity project .
Obviously I want us to win the play offs , but if we don’t the games against you will be the ones I look forward to the most next season .1 user thanked author for this post.
Morris I agree with you completely, swanny has screwed you .The very last match before lockdown I saw was against you lot at GLanford park when Ian Hollow words was in charge . We beat u 2-0 and we thought things could only get better . Little did we know he only came here on the back of a dodgy land deal with our ex chairman and a convicted fraudster !
Although your debts on the ground are bigger than ours , our new owners have given us a new outlook . We’ve had money coming in from sales of players which have gone to paying off our ex chairman’s loans which he insisted were benign and he’d never call in . Mainly like Peter Swann they were due to his own bad decisions .
Like Swann he blamed the fans , but since he’s gone our attendances have risen by 40 percent despite us being 7th in the national league .
The club is now being run in the right way , we might not go up this year or for the next 5 years but the fans can see the difference .
As you said hope is the key word , with Swann you have none .4 users thanked author for this post.
P.S thanks for Macatee, what a player he’s been for us this year , the last striker I can remember us signing from you was Tony Dawes , that didn’t work out too well
We have to get to the play offs first . We had a good result today against Stockport , who to be honest are by far and away the best team I’ve seen this year in the national league . But they are being bankrolled by a multi millionaire and have division one players and are paying division one wages . That’s how unreal this league is . Our average attendance at home is about 5600 and we are 6th in this league on attendances!
I’ve seen us win at Goodison park , Anfield , St James park , Upton Park and Stamford bridge in the halycon days and also seen us get spanked 5-0 by Braintree in the national league .
I can always remember your game against millwall in the play offs which I wanted you to win, what a great game of football that was .
I’m always grateful for being a town fan . If you support a top prem team you’re used to winning , Wembley visits are par for the course , if you’re a lower league club like ourselves every game against the top clubs sticks in your memory , it’s like you’ve won the World Cup !
Football is cyclical , keep the faith !6 users thanked author for this post.
