Nice couple there DM, funnily enough I was listening to Ian Dury yesterday for the first time in about 3 years, then spotted this. Classic stuff and still sounds good.
As for Rush, I always liked this one – pure Led Zep really, but a great all-out rocker. Don’t listen in the car if you’re in a sub-50mph zone!February 8, 2025 at 2:57 pm #298548Yeah, not a big fan of their early stuff. Love Farewell to Kings and the immense Moving Pictures though. Always seemed like decent people and Neil Peart was a very interesting chap. Huge reader and an incredible drummer. Died too young.

Now, I’m no Phil Collins fan, but this got me dancing round the fridge recently…. Pubs like this used to exist, where are they now?
February 9, 2025 at 10:04 am #298619Sadly this reminds me of working in grim and grimy Scunny workshops in the 80s, with radio 1 compulsorily blaring out the speakers. As if the day wasn’t miserable enough, having to endure the likes of Steve Wright and Simon Bates all day. Torture.
February 9, 2025 at 2:11 pm #298633Yeah it’s often hard to separate the memory from the music.
The scene it brings to mind is probably why Sussudio appeals (or not!). Same with a lot of Steely Dan stuff. Like this…1 user thanked author for this post.
February 9, 2025 at 3:11 pm #298636Interesting. Never heard that Dan track before but can see that it was for a film I never saw either. Most the musicians that were on Aja it says on Wiki. It has that sound and feel for sure.

Thought Mr Angry had his moments TBH although most of them just made me seethe.
February 9, 2025 at 7:00 pm #298641It was quite funny for a bit. Every single day ground me down though. Tbf Wright wasn’t that bad, Bates was annoying. Kind of liked DLTs snooker game on Saturday’s too.
February 9, 2025 at 7:30 pm #298642I enjoyed Steve Wright he changed how people thought about DJ’s and presenting on the radio, bit of a pioneer in this country although the Americans had been doing some similar for awhile, think that’s where he got his format from.

February 15, 2025 at 8:34 pm #299036Went to see the Dylan biopic “Complete Unknown” the other night.
Not a huge Dylan fan but thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else been?
February 15, 2025 at 11:20 pm #299041No but will. Not a big fan of his bobness either, but an interesting life and immense influence.
Been trying to decipher the lyrics to SD’s ‘FM’ (above). Any suggestions?

Not a Dylan fan at all but interested to watch this film about him.
February 15, 2025 at 11:33 pm #299043On the Dan theme, saw this piece yesterday. Nothing in there to disillusion me:

Re. SD, that’s an interesting read, DM. It makes you wonder if the snubs were because they could forsee ‘creative differences’ or if it was personal.
FM (above) and the lyrics – they’re maybe not Dylanesque, but still insightful and fun. My take is that they were written back in 70s when smooth-sounding FM stations were becoming widespread. It seems to be set in a bar/brothel where FM and good music like reggae, blues and Elvis has become just muzak to create a relaxed atmosphere. Nobody’s really listening to it – the ‘party girls’ kicking off their high-heeled sneakers really don’t care what’s on, or if it’s someone else’s favourite song… as long as it plays all night, and as long as the mood is right…. No static = no friction, no aggro with the punters, just a nice smooth encounter, apparently. So, for SD, FM radio has reduced great artists to providers of mere musical decoration, sonic wallpaper; the backdrop to brothel sex. There’s also the sound of uncertainty and foreboding in there, maybe because of what FM could mean for 70s pop – a bit like with AI, autotune etc. today.
What would Dylan say?

Yep went a couple of weeks back and I thought Timothee Chalamet was excellent as Dylan, liked the music as it was portrayed and fitted the times the film was covering IMO. Monica Barbaro and Edward Norton were also very good and despite a couple of misrepresentations about events in the time line ( most biopics do that ) I thought it was a good representation of what went on in those times. Nice to see Chalamet had spent a lot of time getting Bobs early guitar playing just about right too, that was important to me as a follower of his style when I began playing 53 years ago.
February 16, 2025 at 11:35 pm #299095On the subject of Dylan; watched this film last week on Prime. Excellent dry Coen brothers film about a fictional early 60s folk musician. Definitely recommend. A Dylanesque performer (assuming it’s supposed to be him) makes an appearance near the end. Give it a watch. You won’t be disappointed.

For those who are interested in Dylan, I believe A Complete Unknown is on TV streaming services from 25th February. The Robbie Williams film is also worth a watch and that’s now available on TV.
