Perhaps theses 100 gun happy coppers that want less protection for civilians are best put to one side and not given another chance.
Yep. Let’s leave the streets to police themselves. That makes sense. Let’s also demonise every policeman trained for weapons as ‘gun happy.’ No need for any caution or reasoned debate. What could possibly go wrong?
Nauseating level of analysis.
The Met is in a terrible state and has been for years, with murder of innocent/unarmed suspects, rape and many other appalling events, many involving women and blacks. It badly needs root and branch reform, but of course there will be resistance. I think you need to recognise this JI and not be so quick to defend the status quo.
Difficult area, we need armed police for certain scenarios on the streets particularly in our large cities where more firearms seem more readily available to criminal gangs but we need to avoid the American way of having armed police constantly on the streets and therefore this gives a more relaxed approach to when and how guns in the hands of officers are used. Are the Met officers handing in their guns really concerned about the risk they may be under for murder charges brought against them or are they just supporting a colleague who has been charged with murder? As I said a very difficult area of discussion.

I’m sure you do… even though I wasn’t.
The Casey report highlights the problems in the Met. Problems that have been there for decades.

The police are the public, the public are the police. I understand the need and difficulties for firearms officers. However, I don’t have much sympathy for them if they are found guilty of wrongdoing. I do not want reductions in stringency and complacency to kick in. The situation in the USA has been bad for decades, I am proud of how we don’t have a policing culture like that. Let’s keep it that way.
Also, with everything going on with The Met I do not think it’s wise to strain community relations further.
