Were Dorking that brilliant or … ?When you stand off players, don’t close them down quick enough and allow them to play then you get punished. The second goal was a result of pushing too many up for a free kick we basically fu***d up and just got caught out on the break through lack of cover. The application of the players second half was 100% better and why we cannot harness that ethic for 90 minutes is probably the greatest unanswered questions of this current squad of Iron players. If Daws and Nelson can solve that puzzle then we have a good chance of moving up the league, we have to be more consistent and apply ourselves for the whole game. Tactics, team shape or how we deal with different teams game by game withstanding, we have to graft as a team all game, every game.
September 25, 2022 at 10:00 am #245523Our midfield did not exist in the first half for 2 reasons.
1. Apter had a free role. In his head that means without the ball he doesn’t need to pick men up and when we do have the ball he needs to dribble through their whole team and shoot. This left Beeston and Butterfield trying to look after a 3 in there. Not blaming Apter for this. He has talent but is only 19 FFS and needs telling where and how to play.
2. They had 2 men in their back line that could pass the ball forward properly. The long haired guy was good at it and their number 3 was exceptionally good at it. Our front 2 should have focused on those 2 and let their other defenders or goalkeeper kick it long. There was one moment that summed up the first half. Their keeper passed a goal kick short to their number 3. He dribbled past Nuttall’s half hearted challenge in his own box. Nuttall stood and watched him stroll into our half unchallenged and play a dangerous ball forward. Most players when they have the piss taken out of them would have chased the culprit down and left an agricultural challenge on him.
To be fair Dorking were good in that first half. I have never seen a team break with the ball and quickly get 5 or 6 bodies in the box. They did this half a dozen times in the first half alone. You can see why they score and concede so many goals. An entertaining team to follow not least for the owner managers interviews.
Someone Swann could learn from. If you own the club and feel the need to pick the team then be upfront about it and take responsibility for the successes and failures.
September 25, 2022 at 11:14 am #245532I will also add that Beestin did a lot of watching and not much moving to block out danger first half, is this still a fitness issue? Yet he seemed to do more second half which would suggest not. Was it more a bollocking issue then?, which if it was then it was not good enough from him first half and he needs to improve his attitude.
September 25, 2022 at 12:21 pm #245537Not sure it’s attitude or even fitness. Beeston at his best is a decent attacking midfielder. Defensively he doesn’t have much idea which is why he’s not playing at a higher level. Not really Butterfield’s strong suit either so when they are facing a 3 that can play a bit they are going to struggle without support from the wing backs and/or one of the centre backs.
This is even more of a problem when your front players are letting their back line pass at will which was happening all of the first half.
Second half we upped the tempo and got their midfield heading back to goal most of the time. Dorking could have still had a couple in the second half though.
The current players and formation will only work if we accept we will concede a few but think we can score more. Personally I am happy with that approach particularly at home or away against the lesser teams.
If you try it at the likes of Wrexham or Solihull you are likely to get a spanking.
September 25, 2022 at 1:07 pm #245541Beestin’s not really been at it now for quite a while. Ever since he was diagnosed with long covid he hasn’t been the same player. I know this may seem odd but we may be better off starting Pugh for Beestin. Beestin is the better footballer of the two but Pugh would add that steel we need.
As said above Butterfield best work comes higher up the pitch and he’s not the most athletic of players at the best of times, he comes into his own when attacking.
Pugh’s a bit sloppy at times but one thing you do get from him is 100% effort and he covers every blade of grass. One thing you do notice is that most CM’s at this level lack a little bit of quality but they all tend to cover the pitch really well and Pugh is a player of that ilk.
September 25, 2022 at 1:48 pm #245544But his passing is shocking. Surely he’s behind Whitehouse, Fletcher and Gallimore as far as selection goes Running around a lot gets you noticed but, on its own, doesn’t add much to the team if there’s no end product.

September 25, 2022 at 3:25 pm #245545Agree with Cass, never rated him in the first place.
Was non-plussed to see him leave and even less impressed to see him back.
Others with football knowledge must agree as he did not get snapped up by another League club and only made Northern Premier league a few weeks back.
September 25, 2022 at 3:28 pm #245546The games he has played in have tended to be those which have been the poorest for the Iron in making space that I’ve ever seen.
When those around you do not give you the movement you need by lolling about ball-watching you anticipate what they’ll do – and very often you’ll be wrong.
Result – duff pass.September 25, 2022 at 3:57 pm #245549I believe his injury was also a reason he was let go and I’m just concerned he may not be as fully fit as he used to be despite being young. Last thing we need is another passenger in the ranks, hope I’m wrong of course.
September 25, 2022 at 7:13 pm #245553Fully fit now and played 90 minutes for Scarborough and trained fully with us inbetween. Pugh was sloppy at times but would add more than Gallimore and Flecther looks ok but at this level, a large part of it is being able to compete and Pugh does that well.
As long as he keeps it simple and let’s Butterfield spray the ball around, it would probably work quite well.

September 25, 2022 at 8:51 pm #245562Butterfield looks much better as an attacking midfielder and has a good shot. He impresses me when going forward. So why does Daws keep playing him defensive just in front of the back four or five players. In the first half it was as if we were playing six at the back. I don’t blame Beestin as he was on his own in the middle. Surely it’s Daws who should take the blame for the first half display, Butterfield was playing where told to. Its as if Daws is too afraid to go out and attack until we go behind.
September 25, 2022 at 11:19 pm #245563So where was Rowe playing?

Result – duff pass.100% nailed it Les, the problem wasn’t Pugh it was the shite around him not showing for the ball resulting in very few options for him, I like Pugh a lot and I watched him closely in his last spell, his frustration was there for all to see when he had the ball and nobody to pass to.
