A lot of people foolishly thought we could deal with Russia on a diplomatic basis back then. It was wrong, but this was before the worst of Putin was known. Some have stalled in treating them as hostile even now.
December 30, 2022 at 9:40 am #251486juvenile whataboutery.
December 30, 2022 at 10:12 am #251490I don’t see the whataboutery?
December 30, 2022 at 10:29 am #251492The OP is juvenile whataboutery in my opinion

December 30, 2022 at 10:40 am #251494you’ll have to explain why Today’s story about Blair on the BBC is whataboutery,it doesn’t follow on from ay other topic at all. It’s about Blair’s need to be a statesman above all else. Not sure it follows as whatabotery on any topic w’re discussing, which in my opinion has to be part of “whataboutery”
December 30, 2022 at 11:17 am #251497I don’t ‘have to’ explain the whataboutery but I will. It’s in the context of the juvenile subject title using ‘fwiend’ and you as a poster frequently criticising Blair and the current Labour Party led by Starmer being ‘Blairite’, and using an archive BBC piece to go out of your way to undermine the the credentials of the current Party (because you don’t like it) by pointing your finger and not explicitly, but implicitly, signalling ‘what about Blair, what about Blair?!’. For it to be ‘whataboutery’ it doesn’t necessarily need to follow directly on from another post or be linked to one. It’s the whole context. It would be a bit a bit simple in discourse otherwise.
December 30, 2022 at 11:22 am #251499what are you on about?,this “archived” came up today when I went on the BBC. It appears you don’t like your lying backstabbers pals being critiqued
December 30, 2022 at 11:26 am #251500If I mention Blair ,it’s whatabouery ,even if I don’t follow on a thread with it to try and deflect? That makes no sense.
December 30, 2022 at 11:35 am #251502I think he’s saying it’s whataboutery because he thinks you’re using it to deflect from Russian sympathies from other left leaning figures more to your worldview (not saying you are like this here).
Personally, I don’t find this to be damning of Blair. This was 2001 when Putin was more unknown, his problems not yet as evident, so I don’t blame him so much in trying to cause some reconciliation between nations at the time. The issue is among those who have continued to apologise and excuse after Putin’s intransigent hostility became more evident.
I find more to blame in Blair for his palling with corrupt and authoritarian regimes since PM (e.g. Egypt) than this for similar reasons. These countries have exposed their inadequacy now and he has no problem with it.

My opinion. If it makes no sense to you, so be it. Many of your posts makes little sense to me in messaging or legibility. Maybe there would be less confusion if they were easier to understand and decipher what your point is?
December 30, 2022 at 11:48 am #251508lol historic whatabouery,it’s a new thing I guess.
it’s a story about Blair trying to be mates with powerful people including Putin and US presidents. But I’ll take the Putin thing if he feels it’s relevent.Blair the great spilled the beans on his motives on a recent documentary when he told about how he went to parliament as a kid and decided that day he wanted to be an MP,showing that his only ambiton ever was personal. that aside he did some good things but owed too many favours to bad people like MurdochDecember 30, 2022 at 11:49 am #251509what are you on about?,this “archived” came up today when I went on the BBC. ‘Lying backstabbers pals’. Wow, that’s really deep. If you’re going to ‘critique’ Starmer and the current Party set up you could make an effort.
December 30, 2022 at 11:53 am #251510‘he went to parliament as a kid and decided that day he wanted to be an MP,showing that his only ambiton ever was personal.’
Lol, when is an ambition not personal?!
December 30, 2022 at 11:58 am #251511“Lol, when is an ambition not personal?!” good point.
I assume most people join a party to help bring about a society they would like, he did it to try be an MP ,It’s not a starting ambiton I want in an MP.December 30, 2022 at 12:00 pm #251512God forbid a PM act as a statesman. Interacting with other nations and trying to forge relations is part of the job.

December 30, 2022 at 12:04 pm #251513I haven’t seen the programme but I’d be very surprised if he formed an ambition to be an MP, just for the sake of being an MP. But you wouldn’t want to credit him with his ambition being anything more than that would you. Thing is, even if anyone presented evidence to you to demonstrate that this ambition was more than those simple terms, you’d just say he’s a liar, so it’s pointless arguing the case with you.
December 30, 2022 at 12:07 pm #251514‘to help bring about a society they would like. Do you have evidence to prove that wasn’t part of his thinking?

December 31, 2022 at 4:45 pm #251605As to the OP I have little doubt if ‘the darling of the left’ Tony Benn was still around, he’d be happy to hear the news. Jaw jaw not war war was one of his sayings.
