What If?
We aren’t promoted this season?
November 20, 2023 at 11:22 pm #277152Financially, what difference is there between the NL and the NLN?
On the field, whether we are promoted or not, I imagine the vast majority of this squad will either have to leave or have contracts renegotiated.
November 21, 2023 at 1:10 am #277154According to Dean a week or two ago he stated 4 or 5 needed to go out to help balance the books. Ferris, Pugh and Bennett have already gone with Chapman probably on his way come January to be replaced by a cheaper loan youngster.
Southport can sign Carver on a perm contract to get him completely off the books. Smith will end up going back to Hearts as well. Going by what Dean was told I think all those just about cover it.

It’ll be a blow to lose Smith.
November 21, 2023 at 9:22 am #277166I seem to remember that some/many/most were signed on 1 year deals and I think Butterfield will be OOC in the summer.

I recall most of the magnificent 7 who Hilton and JD signed were on 1 year deals which takes then through until June / July 2024 at which point us being promoted or not this season may have a huge bearing on who stays or goes , beware the badge kissers a la Joe Nuttall ..and of course the state of the club financially at that time.
November 21, 2023 at 10:40 am #277176Most of the magnificent seven (6 actually) didn’t make it past June!
Harvey Bunker, Sean Shields, Billy Fewster, Gerry McDonagh, Jake Leake???
Only Dion S-F survived!
BTW I’d sooner we sent back Jenkins than Smith.

I should have been clearer … didnt mean the last season magnificent 7 that were crazily all signed on the same day and failed miserably … it was this latest posse signed in the heady days thinking Hilton was our hero and what the new owners are having to pay for now hes scarppered pockets overflowing.

Not forgetting Dean “£1500 a week” Rance who promptly disappeared and got paid off…
November 21, 2023 at 1:27 pm #277188Rance is still technically our player and hasn’t been paid off yet
November 21, 2023 at 1:50 pm #277189Thought Rance would have found a club by now, I’m sure someone would take him.
November 21, 2023 at 1:59 pm #277191Suspect the problem might be him finding one that wants to pay him 1500 per week.

Therein lies the problem with most of our squad.
No offence Wondergoals, but you’re living in cloud cuckoo land if you think shifting Bennett and Pugh on loan will make a dent in our deficit.
We need some big earners off the books and that’s first teamers going.

Anybody in Saudi want him? Hope he’s not playing CIH somewhere.

But CAN Southport sign Carver without him agreeing to a wage cut?
Equally, are we paying something/anything for Smith?Harvey Bunker, Sean Shields, Billy Fewster, Gerry McDonagh, Jake Leake???
Is Fewster still being chased by Premier League clubs?
November 21, 2023 at 3:30 pm #277195Rance is still technically our player and hasn’t been paid off yet
With Rance didn’t someone say he stopped turning up ? If so is he entitled to anything ? Just never saw any press release.

We aren’t promoted this season?
If we aren’t promoted this season, this team that is certainly good enough for promotion will be broken up.
Surely with having to spend plenty of finance buying back the ground, we will get stuck in this division for a while.
This is why we need to find a better way to “manage” the team away from home.November 21, 2023 at 4:15 pm #277197we will get stuck in this division for a while.
Agreed. It’s a ‘now or never’ / one shot only kind of a deal.
November 21, 2023 at 4:31 pm #277198The alternative view is that a good season – ie) top 7 – brings consolidation. The crowds are good and would continue to be if we are challenging again next season.
The top – say – 14 players can probably be afforded but it’s the rest who would probably all have to be employed on the cheap.
Also, promotion might actually bring financial issues into play. Sitting in the bottom third of the NL would see crowds deteriorate.
I know several supporters who want us to remain in this division until we are pretty certain we can be NL top half.
Me? – Dunno.November 21, 2023 at 4:35 pm #277199Some players might find that a reduced wage at GP is still competitive in NL or NLN.
Depends how deep the cut is. I suppose we can discount loyalty as a reason for staying.November 21, 2023 at 5:36 pm #277200Transparency would be appreciated and respectful towards our long suffering supporters.
What is our total debt?
Are we currently breaking even on a bi-weekly basis?
If not, how much extra debt is being accrued each fortnight?November 21, 2023 at 6:30 pm #277201If we don’t go up this season I can see 6 or 7 years in NLN…we won’t have a budget next season like this season, and the NLN novelty factor will wear off for many, sending gates tumbling back down to the 2500 / 2000 mark. It’s this season or not for a long while in my opinion !

November 21, 2023 at 6:33 pm #277202Surely what we can AFFORD is still greater than the majority of NL/NLN/NLS clubs?
Our average attendance is 6th best out of the 72 clubs in the National League system.
November 21, 2023 at 6:49 pm #277204I’m guessing Tamworth’s table-topping squad cost considerably less than ours?
November 21, 2023 at 7:00 pm #277205Rance is still technically our player and hasn’t been paid off yet
Wow. Just add that to the list of unpaid bills!

If not, how much extra debt is being accrued each fortnight?I highly doubt they know themselves with the effort to secure the ground taking priority.

November 21, 2023 at 11:19 pm #277214I’d imagine they’re still untangling the mess left by the ex-messiah.
November 22, 2023 at 7:43 am #277222Not to mention how to finance the £3m ransom for the ground for the one that “stole” it.

He still wants £3M?
Why doesn’t he do the honourable thing and hand it back to the people of Scunthorpe… perhaps in the Trust’s name or something along those lines?
He chased his dream… and it didn’t quite work out. -
