Thank goodness we have technology to determine whether someone’s little toe is a millimetre offside to the detriment of the spectacle. How was football ever tolerated before we had this technology?

April 21, 2024 at 6:43 pm #284307Leave it to the refs, take the wrong decisions against you and moan about them, take the wrong decisions in your favour and cheer. I’d rather that than var any day.

My what is not? Sky have never had a penny of my money, I don’t have a second club, tosspot? Guilty as charged.

April 21, 2024 at 8:18 pm #284319Wish we’d had VAR at Spennymoor!

VAR is just wrong.
If you are at the ground you don’t have a clue what is going on.
If you’re watching on TV you get endless angles & repeats until you’re blue in the face.
Either way it diminishes what you are watching.
What is clear and obvious? If it is then the referee and linesmen (or should I say assistant refs) should spot it.
It should be banned immediately.

April 21, 2024 at 8:39 pm #284324The refs and linesman didn’t see the hand of God goal or the England goal against Germany 2010. FIFA couldn’t allow them decisions to carry on it was getting embarrassing for them.

That England “goal” would have been given with goal line technology, which is totally different to VAR!

April 22, 2024 at 8:36 am #284336Forest aren’t too happy with VAR, they’re in for a hammering from the authorities.
They certainly are.
Even more pathetic and embarrassing statement by them about a ref than the one Scunthorpe put out after the Spennymoor defeat.
All 3 of the penalty shouts they are crying about weren’t given by the ref and at best they were a 50-50 either way subjective call so the var isn’t going to overturn them or ask the ref to review them.
Clattenburg (paid by Forest !) going even further writing newspaper articles about it.
A ton of bricks in fines, point’s deductions or both will now fall on them, Forests owner taking them down in flames unfortunately.April 22, 2024 at 8:39 am #284337Human error was always accepted as part of the game …and life .. until recently. We got steamed up at bad decisions ..and then adopted a swings and roundabouts approach. Give and take. Now there has to be ‘our rights’ and ‘entitlement’ to perfection. There is no concept of an accident anymore. Someone has to be blamed ..and punished. VAR hasn’t eliminated the subjective elements of decisions and, as several have already said, robbed the game of its immediacy and spontaneity.I would happily see it gone ..and live with the hand of God moments.

April 22, 2024 at 9:05 am #284339I’m pretty Sure the authorities will double down with Forest, but they did ask for the VAR man to be stood down because he is a Luton fan they do have a point where there could be a conflict of interest.
April 22, 2024 at 9:18 am #284340The authorities aren’t going to be dictated to by a club over who they do or don’t appoint though, every club will have refs they don’t get on with or blame for losing something or live in a certain area. I get the way it looks but I don’t think the var guy made any wrong calls so it’s sour grapes from Forest.
If I’m wrong (as you know that is quite often) then Atwell will be deeply in the brown stuff and football suffered a fatal blow yesterday.April 22, 2024 at 9:26 am #284342If only that Coventry player took a size 8 boot instead of 9 .. Man U very very lucky thanks to VAR.
Reading what the Notts Forest boss said the ref yesterday is a Luton fan :) and having watched the incidents he mentioned it appears Forest were stitched up like a kipper.
April 22, 2024 at 9:32 am #284343I think Forest were beaten and are clutching at straws in a very vicious way.
Looking at the premier league table, if I was a Luton fan I think Everton v Forest getting a draw would have been my hope to keep both of them in catching distance.
If the Luton supporting var had given 2 penalties from those 3 possibles and it was 2-2 then Forest might have had a reason to cryApril 22, 2024 at 10:08 am #284346Part of the reason VAR came in was due to pundits on shows like MOTD constantly going on about poor refereeing decisions, now the pundits moan about the people who control VAR on match days either informing or not informing referees when they should review certain incidents occurring during the game, it’s bonkers. Damned if you do damned if you don’t it’s a no win situation. VAR is just a machine, it gives marginal offsides because that’s how humans have set it up, all the controversy surrounding VAR is as always down to human interpretation and interference, JI is right they should have left things alone and allowed referees to sometimes make mistakes because guess what?, they are human after all.

April 22, 2024 at 10:15 am #284348One thing about offsides is at what frame do they decided it’s left the boot of the player. In those split seconds, the player looking for the ball could go from on to offside, so the moment they choose is vital. For these incredibly marginal calls, is it really worth this nitpicking over something where there will be margin for error? They are looking for a perfect call when there might not be one.
Before VAR no Man Utd fan would have grumbled about that Coventry goal for possible offside, since it was so marginal, except for the extremely biased. Others have said that it will be hard to shift, because there’s too much money and pride involved now. However, I can’t help but feel the spirit of the game has gone with this (as with other things, including replay scrapping). It would have been better if it was only used for the truly ridiculous, but it would have been hard to stop there with managers causing a fuss over the lesser incidents that would have missed.
April 22, 2024 at 10:46 am #284350Forest aren’t too happy with VAR, they’re in for a hammering from the authorities.
I absolutely applaud them for publicly speaking out and saying they’ve had enough – in the same way that I applaud all of the clubs who have come out and complained about the recently announced changes to the FA Cup.
This quite British attitude of ‘shut up and take it on the chin like everybody else has to’ is a self-defeating trick. Revolution has to start somewhere.

April 22, 2024 at 2:21 pm #284360If the guy in charge of VAR was a Luton fan I’d have thought he’d have wanted a draw between the two teams immediately above them!
