I didn’t realise until today that the Man City v Chelsea Champions League Final will be the fifth time in nine seasons that it has been contested between two clubs from the same country.

Surely this makes a bit of a mockery of “International Competition” and is further proof that these tournaments are organised around money, rather than sport.

The new UEFA Conference League (sounds crap to start with) will add another layer of complexity and as for two clubs from the same country playing the final in another country – well that can’t be right surely?

Champions League final: Should Uefa be more flexible about host cities for environmental reasons?

Where’s your romance gone NI, a final abroad are what dreams are made of, if it had been played at Wembley Chelsea fans wouldn’t even need a day off work to attend. Just look at the national League clubs their gutted there playoff final has been moved from Wembley to Ashton gate, fans and players alike, you are right about the mockery of the competition bring back the European cup one team from each country would put it right.

UEFA aren’t going to change back now Awaywego to the old European Cup model because the game is now just money driven but I agree with you about the old format. The best team from each country meeting in a simple knock out competition was brilliant for fans and made for some real exciting European nights at our biggest club grounds, although Liverpool v Barcelona and City v Spurs in recent seasons were pretty exciting games TBF, gone forever I’m afraid but I guess the top brass will say that’s how the game develops. Maybe some of us are just stuck in a rose tinted glasses time warp when it comes to big team football from years ago.

A Champions League featuring clubs who aren’t champions has always seemed a bit of a misnomer to me.

And the fact that 5/9 finals have been the equivalent of domestic games would reenforce that.

Taking the clubs that finished 3/4 in each group and putting them in the Europa League to try again is ridiculous and creating a new format seems just as daft.

Managers moan about too many games yet they are all scrabbling to finish in a “European Spot”. So what happens? The domestic game suffers.

    And ultimately the fans.

Let ’em do what they like.

My loyalties remain entirely with cricket – the greatest sport-cum-art form known to mankind.

Football is not in the same league. (Sorry.)

Were it not for the Iron – I could never watch another football match – and it would not bother me at all.

Agree with all of the OP apart from the bit about the Conference League, which I think is a good invention for smaller countries & clubs. Like a sort of LDV Trophy for those nations.

It’ll also make for a much more streamlined UEFA Cup, which can’t be a bad thing.

Les if the Iron is the only football you watch then I can understand why you prefer cricket.

I have watched the playoffs this year. They have put into perspective just how poor we have been recently.
Still. Now time to get a little excited about The Iron, though. Our team for the coming season should be pretty much in place by this time next week -well, shouldn’t it?
