I’m sure someone will be along shortly to inform us the U18s have nowhere to play their home fixtures this season.

Sez you, no evidence as usual, pure speculation, go to the press seeing as your such a concerned Iron fan who loves the club but you won’t and the majority on here know why.

Hearing the academy is going to be closed and the player/coaches have been told to find new clubs immediately.

People need to start to realize that this club has been run so bad for a number of years it’s going to take time to balance it financially. Now we’ve dropped down to this level we don’t get football league money any more.

In an ideal world we’d keep the academy and develop it but the money simply doesn’t seem like it’s there to make it financially viable.

What we need to do, is get out of this league A.S.A.P and get it back up and running. I don’t think many clubs have academies at this level. I’m pretty sure they have younger youth players but have them train as one big group with the older first team players.

The ‘Academy’? – all that’s left is the U18s… and that’s to be disbanded now too?

More redundancies – more redundancy pay!

Every day, a little bit more of the club dies.

I looked at this last season.
From memory, I believe that there were only 2 or 3 teams who didn’t have an U18/U19 team.

As WGs rightly points out we must except after years of miss management just how far the club has fallen and it boils down to cutting the cloth accordingly ..

Not sure if there are any NLN or NL clubs with reserve teams , U18s or academies ?

‘Every day, a little bit more of the club dies.’

Or it’s a new dawn. Take your pick. Maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle?

AA, we have been told, it’s over, there’s no point raking over the coals. The Academy, and under 18’s was just a pointless gravy train for those people working in it. There is no value in it, any half decent lads will make it to professional level somewhere if they are good enough. There is no point producing our own we can just pick up ones who haven’t made it at other clubs. Local players will still have local grassroots teams they can play for and there are development places like Bottesford where they may even get signed up for Lincoln City in the actual football league, such places may even do some of the school stuff so local kids can meet actual pro footballers from their nearest league team. Anyway, if we get back to the league we can start taking the FA money again and dust down those old portacabins, mow that school field and start again. What’s the problem ?

The execution, timing and lack of media (not SM) announcements of the decision.

The club (1st team & office / ground staff) benefitted from the so called ‘gravy train’ over many a year.

The Auditors never trawl through the minutiae of the accounts, the content of cross company charges, the validity of cross company charges, the work content (man hours) claimed in cross company charges, invoices logged to the incorrect account, invoices for services not used or equipment etc never purchased allocated to the wrong account.

EFL rules state that Academies should have a separate bank account and accounting system for the academies.
    This never existed at Scunthorpe.

The EFL were more interested in, for example:
    1 age appropriate pitches
    2 age appropriate goals
    3 full size 4G pitch
    4 hydrotherapy pools
    Etc

Jesus, the first team have never had a full size 4G training pitch, let alone the academy!
Hydrotherapy pools – fart in the bath the physio may have been heard to say to the injured first team players.
It was a beg, borrow and make do set up.
It was never a ‘gravy train’

It’s probably the best decision to close it but was executed in the very worst way possible.

I was being sarcastic AA, sorry.
There is a full page “Academy Roundup” in todays match virtual program, I would say a lot of supporters still won’t know it has been scrapped

I worked at the academy for 6 seasons and in that time it got worse every season, the offices were old and dated with very little in the way of equipment, the equipment standard got worse and worse, the pitches were a disgrace and an embarrassment.

The coaches and staff deserved so much more as in the end lots grass roots teams had better equipment and facilities, a professional academy is meant to be the best of young players available with better facilities and coaching.

It will be a long time before Scunthorpe United can produce its own players through an academy based system! As the funding isn’t going to be there and more to the point the way this has been handled will take many years for the confidence of local parents to trust anything that the club says.

I know lots of parents have said they will never bring back their child into a Scunthorpe United academy even if it restarted tomorrow, it is a sad day for the town and club as there was some really promising youngsters who are now going to be part of academies at Lincoln, donny, grimsby, hull and other academies within the catchment area’s.
