    Interesting reading….

With a goal ratio of around one in three games last season, in a team where he was often deployed on the wing, the United gaffer is in no doubt the 26-year-old will find the net considering the number of chances he expects his side to create in the forthcoming campaign.

“I was speaking to Carlton downstairs, and he’s statistically one of the best strikers in the league, which is what we’ll need to get promoted,” he continued.

“I see him as a striker. Without giving too much away, I see him as a centre forward. I want him to form a partnership up top. We’re going to create a lot of chances this season, like we did last season, but with two centre forwards on the pitch, I think we’ll score more.

Shame a previous manager did not think like that.

A previous manager was over cautious to the point of negativity, it cost us promotion and him his job

Cloud Cuckoo Land originated from Greek literature if memory serves.
Well, our ‘tactics’ are certainly all Greek to me!

Deja Vu indeed BUT with a side of extra negativity, gone large on the over-cautiousness, and much lighter on the creativity.

Oh and the footballs much worse to watch too.

If Butler thinks Carlton is a Centre Forward we’re in deep doo-doos!

He’s a winger isn’t he, let’s face facts here. Play 4/3/3 with carlton one side, Roberts the other with Whitehall “if fit” up top. Beestin, brogan with clunan sitting a bit deeper with a proper flat back 4.

Least that would be more simplistic and would suit the players.

What made Butler think Carlton was striker when he played nearly all last season cutting in from the wing ?

The squad he’s assembled is bizarre to say the least.

I notice that according to the squad numbering we still don’t have the #11 shirt taken.

Were we after a left winger but it didn’t go through? We certainly could do with one.

We have three strikers supposedly. 1 scores
The others I’d have had a better tally than these two put together.
I personally don’t see anything in Fishburn or Carlton to make me think that they will even stumble to 5 goals in a season. But the shop window is very sparse.

Whitehall is all we’ve got. He’s a more of a target man too when hes not upto his antics trying to outwit the referee.
Someone nippy to play off Whitehall would be my preference. 442

Shame a previous manager did not think like that.

He’s holding a fans forum on 22 November so if all his local supporters want to make the trip to Spalding.

When taking consideration he let Elliot to go to then sign a winger he believed to be a striker leaves a lot be desired. I had no problem in the club letting him go, but he needed to be replaced with an actual striker.

The club didn’t let Elliot go he refused a new contract the same as Butterfield.
After what was found out about Butterfield’s offer makes you wonder what he was offered.

All I know is that he scored a fair few important goals for us last season. If we’re to play 2 up top then it needs to be Whitehall plus someone new (Carlton is no striker and neither is Beestin. Also haven’t seen anything from Fish to suggest he can play alongside Whitehall).

He Scored no important goals for us last season, Dean give him chances and he didn’t take any of them especially when Danny suspended.
Had chance to be the main man was first choice in the opening game at Tamworth subbed for Whitehall who scored and that was that.

He scored no important goals? You’re talking absolute nonsense.

    2-2 vs Boston. Scored both.
1-1 vs Blyth. Scored our only goal.
2-1 vs Gloucester. Scored the equaliser.
1-1 vs Chorley. Scored our only goal.
2-2 vs Alfreton. Scored our 2nd.
2-0 vs Rushall. Scored our opener in the 90th minute.

Used mainly as a lone striker, not his game. Should have been Elliott + Whitehall not either/or.

Couldn’t agree more Cass same this season I’m wanting Carlton and Whitehall up top, not for one game and then get binned but a decent run out together sometimes it needs just time to form a partnership.

Danny Elliott has scored 15 goals for Macclesfield so far this season. They seem to be getting a tune out of him.

Throw away comment you say Deerey!
We would have still finished 4th in the league without any of his 11 goals.
The ones highlighted by BLT he only scored the one winner and would have only cost us 6 points if he didn’t score at all.
In the scheme of things it’s reasonably fair to say he didn’t score any important goals imo.

Lower league though Siderite, scored 4 against Gainsborough for us in a competitive game so who knows. Fair play to him you can only score against who’s in front of you, and the system your team plays.
I won’t moan if he scores against us next season (if we don’t get promotion) unless it’s from 1 up top. It’ll be our loss there gain and just another slight on Dean’s tactics.

Trinity’s goal against Chester last Saturday started from a Chester corner.
I’ve always thought leaving two up top for the opposition’s corners is a good tactic – they have to leave 3 players back to cover.
One high (half way line) & left, the other high & right – Gainsborough executed the counter swiftly and effectively last Saturday.
Well done Russ & the Trinity lads!

Funny, as I remember people complaining about Wilcox leaving no forwards up front when defending corners over 10 years ago.

Maybe Russ has learned from his mistakes? Absolutely nothing wrong with a manager changing his tactics to improve results.

Towards the end of his world record breaking run he left no forwards up front full stop.

Chester were down to ten men, so not quite what it seems.
