How time and hindsight improves the rose tint on those specs. Godden, Wootton & Goode had plenty of chances here and did little to impress. Arguably both Godden & Wootton were lucky to get the contract extensions they did. Godden eventually found his touch and Wootton his level. Goode has improved from donkey to passable L1 CB. No doubt those calling for the moving on of Hallam, KDT, Green, O’Neil et al will be claiming we made a big mistake letting them go in the unlikely event that they come good elsewhere.
Exactly.
Wootton in particularly had a good opportunity here whilst in League 1. He just wasn’t good enough, at the time. He also failed to impress at numerous loan spells in non league.
Luckily for him, it’s clicked at Notts County and he may well be ready for another crack at league football.
The Charlie Goode story truly baffles me though. Couldn’t believe it when I saw him On MOTD the other night.
Fair play to him.

I don’t call playing a youngster upfront on his own with limited service is a good idea personally.
There was no excuse not signing him on a long term contract and loaning him out. I don’t give a crap what anybody else says, we should have gone down that route.

November 10, 2021 at 7:17 pm #217666Add George Miller to the list 7 goals in 10 games for Walsall, Some disliked him so much they didn’t want to credit him with the goal he did score.
I was one of those. He didn’t touch it and is the worst striker we’ve ever had.
I didn’t know he was at Walsall and I can’t believe he’s scored 7 in 10. Im going to have to watch them but at the minute I’m assuming they all just hit him and went in.
He’s not one who I ever thought had a chance of making it. He looked like he didn’t know what a football was.
Don’t remember seeing much of Godden, Wootton was misused but never looked great. I’d take him back now though. Goode was shit.
Lyle Taylor is the biggest one for me recently. Could see a good player in there from miles away.
November 10, 2021 at 7:27 pm #217667He had a contract with us for 6 years WG and scored 11 goals, so we needed no exuse for letting him go, unless of course you know different.

You can, but ‘some’ will flatly deny they ever said it.

You’re a better scout than me, I couldn’t see anything in Taylor, especially as I’ve rarely seen a player whose head seemed to drop quicker. Granted we tried to use him as a target man, which clearly wasn’t his game, but he never really seemed to fancy playing for Scunthorpe.

November 10, 2021 at 9:50 pm #217690When Wootton was trying to make his mark in the first team we were a half decent league 1 side.
Now we are a shite league 2 side he would establish himself no problem.
Doesn’t necessarily mean he has improved much.

Not doing too bad is he, you seen his goal scoring record since moving ?. I know it’s conference but the gap is getting ever closer now to league 2 in my opinion.
I’ve seen him a few times on BT Sport and he looks like he’s improved a fair old bit.
Put it this way, I’d rather have a conference Wootton over Loft any day of the week.
Nearly averaging a goal every 2 games he’s played since been there. Not too shabby.

November 11, 2021 at 9:25 am #217699Just because you and others didn’t want Miller to score says alot about many on here, just look at the other night posters hoping for a really low crowd why?, Just so they can beat Swanny over the head very sad indeed. Ps Miller did get a touch on the ball I was there and I saw it.
November 11, 2021 at 10:07 am #217701Shame the archive Blast Furnace is no longer with us. Be interesting how many howls of protest were posted when Taylor, Wooton, Burgess and Goode left us.
Some players just do better with other clubs. Josh Morris, Duane Holmes and Murray Wallace were not much mourned in their departure from their previous clubs but they certainly looked pretty good once they arrived here. Not to mention Sharpe and Hooper.
It happens all the time and will continue to happen.

Not a chance O’Neill will become good elsewhere… well maybe Sunday League he might do a job. Worst player I’ve seen for us! Says something when he couldn’t get on a 9 man bench at the weekend or in the squad for the awful Papa Johns Trophy.
Wootton would do a shift in League 2 now I think too.
November 11, 2021 at 11:31 am #217707I’m surprised that nobody mentioned Hakeeb. I’m sure he was a better player when he went to the mud rats, than he ever was for the Iron. I’d do cartwheels if Keith resigned him, and I can’t remember the last time I did one of them.

November 11, 2021 at 1:24 pm #217711Hakeeb was the player who, over a sustained period of first team football, flattered to deceive with one brilliant match in ten, one decent, one average and seven poor.
I have never seen such a talented player serve himself – and the supporters – as badly as that man did.
I cheered when he left and stared in disbelief that we got any money for him at all.
I have never seen a player who appeared to need a sports psychiatrist more than he. So much wasted ability.
Didn’t George Kerr say he played like a man who could go to either Real Madrid or a Sunday league side?5 users thanked author for this post.
November 11, 2021 at 4:42 pm #217732When we were serial playoff contenders in L1 it was easy to be picky. Not so easy when your bottom of L2!
November 12, 2021 at 7:01 pm #217789Bit strange when our fans are cheering Hakeeb leaving the club
Massive talent.. yes he could go missing but could produce something special at the turn of a hat!

November 12, 2021 at 7:16 pm #217790But rarely did.
Sadly he was a luxury player we couldnt afford. And to me, sadly, epitomises many many young entitled players these days.
Seriously…just how many young players have we seen arrive on the England scene over the last ten or so years, bigged up to be the next messiah?
Anc how many were/are?November 12, 2021 at 7:20 pm #217792Hakeeb not going well at Lincoln,I am not sure the move to Bristol was the correct one
November 12, 2021 at 7:32 pm #217794Hakeeb not going well at Lincoln,I am not sure the move to Bristol was the correct one
It wasn’t, but his agent drove the deal. He made the money, think it was a 3yr deal, but certainly badly advised if he wanted to go higher. Bit like Josh Wright head turned by other things and career went backwards. Great shame.
November 12, 2021 at 10:14 pm #217809Adelekun had 14 games at Hull, maybe two good ones and twelve anonymous ones. A wasted talent.

November 12, 2021 at 11:09 pm #217810Has he ever got over that nasty injury he picked up during his first few months at Bristol?, not an excuse but sometimes that small lack of fitness at a higher level can make all the difference. When he made his debut in league two and made those amazing runs and scored some fantastic individual goals I thought ” wow this kid is going to be a huge star “, just never happened, such a shame as I believe he was an awesome talent when just a young kid.

November 13, 2021 at 12:39 pm #217840Find some of the comments above a bit baffling, Hakeeb couldn’t have done much more for us in his final season…he registered 0.4 assists per 90 mins which was the joint highest in League 1 that season!
November 13, 2021 at 12:52 pm #217841That sounds very suspicious, just less than 1 assist every 2 games hardly seems like a major contribution to the team.
November 13, 2021 at 2:09 pm #217847So joint top assists per minute in the league across an entire season isn’t a major contribution? How can one contribute any more, considering nobody else in the team got anywhere near those stats?
November 13, 2021 at 2:28 pm #217848I’m not disputing it, I’m just puzzled that such an apparently low figure can rate so highly. Maybe a lot of solo goals that season?
