This year we’ve received 51 Christmas cards.
Only two had any Christian content, both being the Three Kings/Wise Men. Five featured Father Christmas and the rest, all 44 of them, had some form of winter scene, mostly animals in the snow.
So it would appear that the vast majority of our friends and relatives look upon it as a celebration of the winter solstice rather than anything religious or indeed the giving of presents.
Anyway, whatever it means to you have a great one.

December 24, 2024 at 3:22 pm #296025December 24, 2024 at 4:05 pm #296028How can every knee be bent on the same day? Is there just one day of judgement or a day of judgement every day? If it’s every time sombody dies, I must confess I’ve missed a few knee bending sessions.
December 24, 2024 at 5:26 pm #296033The traditional Christian explanation to your opening question, Heath .. there is an event ..a day … at the end of time when every life lived is called to account. Death is the portal .. the gateway out of the opportunity to live well and give pleasure to the ‘lifegiver.’
I’m not sure that NIs ‘Christmas Card survey’is so reliable in that I suspect lots of people just buy cards in packs, according to price etc. I do agree that Christmas is a cultural ‘relic’ more infused with a pagan past celebrating the Solstice. Jesus birth was likely at Tabernacles which is early Autumn ..but I nevertheless welcome the warm connections of family and friends that Christmas brings. And even the heightened sense of peace and goodwill that, however temporary for many, can never be a bad thing :)December 24, 2024 at 5:49 pm #296034But JI, people can only buy the cards that the retailers make available to the public.
Is there a plethora of snow scenes (something that is a rarity these days) on cards because it is a faith-neutral image?
Inclusivity must sell better than niche.
December 24, 2024 at 6:36 pm #296045NI, if your correspondents are religious, do they always send cards which reflect their sentiments, or do they sometimes send pound shop / charity cards, which may be more politically correct / neutral, either because they (the cards, not your pals) are cheap, or maybe because they take into account that you don’t celebrate Xmas religiously??
We should also consider the text therein. If the card has a neutral snowy image or similar, say a fictitious, rustic country scene, is it always the case that the text inside, assuming there is one, is always non-religious?
The final question is this. Are we overthinking this and just a bit pissed?1 user thanked author for this post.

You’re drifting into the realms of relativity here.
