Seen both and my initial thoughts are that nobody has disappointed. For the first time in at least 5 seasons we have a group of players prepared to support one another and do the ugly stuff. Early days of course but allied to a bit of quality I am cautiously optimistic.

Of the new lads 2 or 3 particularly stand out.

Fitzsimons looks and acts like a proper keeper- even when he has little to do as in the Donny game he keeps his concentration and is sharp when needed. Chapman is decent and did little wrong against Hull but has a tendency to switch off. Fitzsimons to start with Chapman as strong back up. Both significant upgrades on Watson and the gaggle of loanees.

Kouogan looks good, strong competitive and a bit of pace. Not afraid of the ball and can hit a decent long pass. First choice centre back on what he has shown so far. Evan’s looks decent but Boyce also looking much better with a bit of pace next to him. Toss up with those 2 who partners Kouogan.

Kelly and Denton both energetic and consistent at left back.

In midfield Clunan looks a quality player. If he had gone full time sooner would have made 2 or 3 levels higher than this. Constantly talking to team mates and organising things. Will be surprised if he is not made captain. Also “works” the ref which is something we have not had since Dawson. Scales shows some nice touches and his first inclination is forward which I like.

Up front Whitehall is a proper centre forward – defenders and opposition fans will hate him. He is no Torpey but from the same mould and should be really effective at this level. Probably won’t get as many goals as we would like but will occupy centre backs all game and leave gaps for others. Elliot will probably have to play second fiddle in a 4-3-3 but is looking fitter and livelier than last season and should be able to take advantage of defenders for 20/30 minutes once Whitehall has softened them up.

Robert’s has plenty of skill and class. Will either be player of the season or take Hallam’s spot on the physios table. Would be nowhere near this level if it was not for his injury record.

Laws shows promise but won’t get in ahead of a fit Roberts.

Of the existing players Ogle will play when fit. Shrimpton looks ready to step up a level this season as does Wilson and I expect both will feature heavily.

Butterfield has obvious class but not sure he fits with Dean’s approach and tactics which seems to be poor man’s Klopp.

Beeston might cope with that but probably needs to pick his position and stick to it.

MK Iron – Thanks for putting that together – not much coverage going on about the actual team progress at the moment – with everything else going on.
Visiting family in Scunny soon – which happens to take in the Peterboro game :)
So atleast I now know who to look out for on match day! UTI

Loving the nicknames Kian Scales has for Chris Plummer and Andy Butler, Plums and Butts, just need another coach in called Titler and we’ll have the full set.

    Good summary MK.

Only seen a couple of games but the standouts were Wilson, Denton and Scales. It sounds like the majority have had a solid pre season though

Chapman has played the 2 games I have seen against Gainsborough and Hull, so can’t comment on Fitzsimmons but he hasn’t conceded yet,but apart from that MK is spot on, but the players look to be enjoying themselves so I hope we see the Jimmy Dean that people were saying he is a quality coach not the one that was here for a few months last season

ive only seen highlights and read what Scunny fans are saying but seems most of all the new signings have impressed , some slightly more than others .. example Barrows has not had many mentions.

Add on Elliot Wilson Ogle Butters Beestin and Shrimpton and its a dam tasty side that should make for a successful season ahead.. players like Pugh Rance DSF and the youngsters (Poulter n Robertson) may find it hard to get into the first team regularly

As said 2 good solid keepers Fitz number 1 with chappo as cover bodes well.

My personal fav of the newbies is Clunan

Absolutely nailed it MK, very difficult to disagree with anything you have said there. I will admit to being cautiously optimistic about the season ahead both on and off the pitch.

My only criticism would be up front. I think we have a good group of forwards, but I would like a partnership rather than individuals,if you get what I mean.
Sharp and Keogh,Hooper and Hayes,Daws and Flounders they go together. Would like a recognised partnership in the present team, working as a partnership, and not looking like isolated individuals.

I pretty much agree with you Bill on where our weakness could be.

Without switching to a 4-4-2 I don’t think we will get a traditional front 2. In what seems to be Dean’s favoured 4-3-3 the key for me is whoever ends up playing furthest forward of the midfield 3 – the number 10 position if you like. We are going to need double figures of goals from that slot with the other midfielders pitching in with 5 or 6.

At the minute that looks like Scales or Beeston (possibly Butterfield?) will get that slot.

Also Wilson and Roberts will have to become the second striker when the ball comes in from the other side.

Whitehall and Elliott’s records suggest they could get 20 in a good side at this level but of course in this system only 1 is likely to be on the pitch at any given time.

If Whitehall is to be the muscles then we need a nippy “fox in the box” in the mould of Flounders, Forrester, Sharp and Hooper.

Can’t se Elliot in that role if I’m honest.

Agree that’s the kind of player we are lacking. When plan A isn’t working and you want 2 genuine strikers. Whitehall and Elliott want the same balls and the same space.

Dean was cagey the other day about 1 more signing. If they do I hope that is the kind of player they are looking for.

I think Poulter will become that player in time but for this season I would prefer him on loan at the likes of Ilkeston or Gainsborough so he can get a decent amount of games in mens football.

Lavery not in the Donny squad at GP.
    Is he available?
    Would he come?
    Can we afford him?

Peter Clarke has signed for Warrington town, he’ll be a good player at this level.

Agreed with all above ..IMO the squad is 99% complete and been impressed will all the new signings however twood be nice to sign a Billy Sharp type of player … whats the word on the Scunny streets the GP goss .. how likely is it ?

JD must have a pretty good idea of his starting 11 and im guessing a selection headache or two in the future , its been quite some time since most positions having excellent covering options.

Suffice to say i hope we hit the ground running n have a decent season.

If I write “Renard dans la boîte” does that give me genius status?
