Among all of the impressive aspects of Butler’s start to management is his use of the squad, not being afraid to change things up to cope with the schedule and keeping things fresh. I think virtually every outfield player has had some game time now, good to keep them involved, take the pressure off the first choice guys, and keep the results flowing.
It gives me confidence that we’ve still not seen much from Brogan or Rowley, or Law, and Carlton’s yet to score. Suggests there is plenty more to come.
September 4, 2024 at 12:49 pm #290495Will probably see more of them in the cup. AB, in last nights post match, mentioned the necessity of rotation / resting players for that game.

I don’t think it has always worked, or will, but 6 times out of 7 so far is not a bad return on the new style of using substitutions.
September 4, 2024 at 1:32 pm #290498Nice to see Shrimpton get a short run out near the end last night, he’s got onto the bench now and I’d like to see him given more games in the future, I’m sure Andy will give him a run in the side at the appropriate time.

First touch was poor, second touch appalling! Didn’t really notice him ‘do’ anything much after that.

Shows he needs more game time then, he would not be in the squad if the manager thought he could not help the team play winning football.
September 4, 2024 at 2:48 pm #290502He didn’t have time to contribute much at all – like 5mins plus added time? At that stage he comes on and hares about wanting to get on the ball. Can’t judge him much on that cameo. Needs a decent 20-30mins

September 4, 2024 at 4:01 pm #290503Rowley hasn’t been involved because he’s been injured, but is now back. To judge Shrimpton on that is ridiculous, he was only on the pitch for 5 minutes and were his first minutes of the season.
Difference between Butler and Dean was Butler counteracted Buckley Rickets by putting an extra midfielder on to close the space down, if that was dean he’d have stood there clueless until they equalized.

I didn’t judge him, I said what happened last night.
I hope he settles down and goes on to do well.

September 4, 2024 at 4:24 pm #290507Wonder goals do you actually read before you spout and you say Dean was clueless?
September 4, 2024 at 4:55 pm #290509Actually agree with Wondergoals. Relegation from the National League proved it – if he knew what he was doing he would have turned the job down !

Nothing’s ever going to be perfect.

I take that comment back, Dean was an incredible manager who was just unlucky.

September 4, 2024 at 9:55 pm #290522I guess we are all guilty sometimes of misinterpreting someone else’s post and responding without properly thinking things through. Then again some people write posts in a certain way which could well lead to misinterpretation then reply with a different interpretation when questioned about it. Wow where’s the psychiatrist when you need one?
September 4, 2024 at 10:14 pm #290525Dean has proved himself a successful manager of part time football teams.
The primary skill required is spotting good footballers and convincing them to join your club. Having an owner prepared to recompense players over the odds for the level does simplify this somewhat. Other than deciding your formation tactical nous is not really required as you cannot drill different formations in 2 90 minutes training sessions a week particularly when you have to use most of that time for fitness work.
If we assume Dean had a significant say in recruitment under Hilton then he didn’t do too bad. 9 of them are making our unbeaten starting 11.
Managing full time professional teams to success requires a whole bunch of additional (and more difficult) skills.
Butler has spent over 20 years in the full time game most of it in leadership roles, captain, coach etc.
Dean prior to coming here had never been involved in full time professional football.
Dean isn’t a crap manager he was just the wrong manager for the job Hilton brought him in for.

Some would say that Dean was not brought in by Hilton to be a success but rather another outcome. I have no comment or knowledge regarding that.
September 5, 2024 at 11:31 am #290535I have no clue as to what Hilton’s financial plan or ambitions were but it seems beyond doubt to me that he wanted footballing success.
He got some of his football decisions wrong whereas he seemed to get all of his financial and communication decisions wrong.
