Hilton told JD his budget. I presume…

Yes, committing to contracts, probably above usual NLN level, and then refusing to honour them (no more cash going in) was probably not such a smart move. (Not for the Club anyway.)

Said on many occasions at home we should play 4 4 2 – for whatever reason it works.

352 or 352 or 4411 or 4321 – previous managers try them but have no idea how to change it when it does not work. We need to get to basics start with formation in all games, be able to pass the ball, be able to control the ball and be able to find space to receive the ball.

Stop targeting and play front foot football and want to win ALL games.

Managers see PL teams, how they play, and then try to copy them.
You can’t play PL tactics with NL players.

In my opinion fielding the formation we had been using up to yesterday, we had some fluidity and familiarity. I think ripping all that up and going for something completely different backfired.

As mentioned further down in the thread, with the talent we have at our disposal we should not be setting up with that formation in a bid to pinch a win as we have more than enough ability to just go and get it.

No offence to Boyce and Barrows but when Kuougun is out you can tell we lack any real quality back up there. Barrows looks better at RB and Boyce is ok for a game or two but not much more than that.

We could do with shedding a few midfielders and drafting in a better CB and another striker to properly bolster the squad. Asking a hell of a lot to think about gaining promotion with only Elliot and Whitehall.

Not sure if you’ve being paying much attention recently WG, but we are on our arse financially.

I imagine any outs will be to trim the wage bill rather than make room for new players to be added to it.

In a mainly part time league we certainly have enough to be winning the league, it’s everything else going on that is the problem. Once it all settles down hopefully it will come together again.

Still asking a lot Booba with only Whitehall and Elliot as our only strikers. Our squad in terms of numbers is pretty strong everywhere else apart from up front.

Think too much is being made about the formation.

We haven’t been at the races for a while now and creating chances has become a real sticking point for this team.

We’ve looked most dangerous when we attack with pace and go direct; Beestin in particular seemed to excel with this and has been a big loss. When we go sideways it allows the opposition to set up and we really struggle to break sides down.

Off the field issues have surely played a part but I don’t want to get in the habit of finding excuses for what is a good set of footballers for this level.

We have 3 central strikers in Whitehall, Bennett and Elliott.

We have 2 right sided forwards in Wilson and Sembie-Ferris.

We have 2 left sided forwards in Law and Roberts. Dean was also playing Beestin there before his injury.

I really think 10 forwards is enough bordering on overkill.

Our real problem is that only one of our 10 or so midfielders seems capable of creating chances.

Apart from spells against Darlington and Scarborough we have never put teams under sustained pressure. Given our advantages over most teams in this division are our fitness levels and a higher skill level why are we not playing a high tempo passing game at all times?

Whenever we do it we look like scoring goals. A bit more Klopp and a lot less Guardiola please Jimmy.

in truth weve been playing crap for weeks ..only really the Darlington and Scarboro games did we click… we werent great in the 1-0 win over Brackley to be honest twas only Butters goal that saved the day.

Off field goings on more than likely could have effected the players ,JD away for his op even terrible clueless refs may be factors but should not used as excuses for a dross performance like Chester.
The only valid excuse are the injuries to Clunan Beestin etc which have made a huge difference.
No doubt this squad is more than capable at this level but its so easy for teams to set up against us , we cannot break a good defensive side down and lack any cutting edge in front of goal , creating real goal scoring chances just isnt happening and if things dont change its mid table obscurity this season followed by players out of contract and another year of NLN to follow.

All these guys are professionals but there seems to be a lack of confidence, pride n fight in a few.

Next 2 games are crucial , 3 away games on the bounce after that !!

New team, multi new owner, same malaise in most games, bad decisions go against us, needless mistakes at the back costing us a goal and heads and go down, that’s Scunny united over the last 4/5 seasons. Can anybody put a finger on it? no matter how many new managers or players come in they seem to inherit the lack of confidence pride and fight that IFA alludes to.

    Good points.

I thought our best spell was the first 30 minutes against South Shields. They are a good side and we completely tore them to shreds. The ball was moved about so quick and they were under constant pressure.

I know we can’t play at that tempo for 90 minutes but that performance was the benchmark for me.

Ps, not forgetting the 2 biblical storms this season, and even Saturday lots of fans on the train didn’t get there Chester put the away attendance at 361, not going well is it. But it will change sometime won’t it.

    We’ve actually got four strikers.

One is on loan at Southport!

Why can’t they do that for 90 mins ? They train full time if they are ‘blowing’ after 60 mins they need to up the fitness levels.

The midfield in particular were making so many forward runs and moving so quick there is no way you can expect them to play like that for 90mins- they are only human and even the best have rest periods during games.

That’s not to say we shouldn’t be fitter then the rest of the teams in this league though, I’ve not been able to tell the difference to part time
And full time as of yet.

Thought it told against Darlington TBH Cliff, the last twenty minutes when Elliott and Sembie-Ferris came on, Darlo’s legs had gone, we ran them ragged and knocked in two late goals but most teams have held their own but its been when the better players have been injured and the squad doesn’t look as strong.

Of course we didn’t know then that Darlington are a poor side even by National League North standards. They have only 1 win from 12 games.

Even Scarborough are no great shakes sitting in lower mid table.

We have yet to put in a consistently good performance against a genuine top 7 team.

Tomorrow would be a great time to start. Suspect we might see Clunan and Law pushed back in a bit earlier than ideal.

With regard to Bennett, he’d be better in a straightforward 4 4 2 probably with Wilson, but that won’t happen with JD.

    Fair point.

I wonder if the full time ‘advantage’ will kick in as the season progresses.

It should be more apparent in midweek games you’d think. Plenty of Sat-Tue coming up so let’s hope we can take advantage of the FT training.

Well the Darlo win was a Tuesday night Cass, let’s see how we get on tomorrow, could be an interesting pointer to the remainder of the season.

Hard not to ignore him, he’s ok to win headers here and there but will never score many, even at this this level !

    He’s at Southport, not Southend!

Yep next two home games are massive to how the rest of the season will pan out.

Carver was on fire at Southport for a spell but dropped off recently…cant recall exactly when but i do recall him stating he didnt want to play for Scunny again.

As for the current first team squad IMO Whitehall looks very disinterested and just going through the motions which isnt good with Elliot possibly out injured and YES Bennett wins headers and runs a lot but couldnt hit a pigs arse with a shovel when it comes to finishing.

Being out played out fought by teams who set up defensively against us, we give a soft goal away and then we cant break them down A LA Buxton TWICE.

Hoping Butterfield stays fit and some of the injured return esp Clunan Beestin Kouogun and Roberts (just how long the latter will remain fit is guesswork)
