Resigns. Probably the best for him and England, especially to announce it quickly and not drag it on. I wish him the best.

July 16, 2024 at 11:48 am #288221Yep best of luck Gareth, eight years is probably about right to be in charge, did not win either of his finals but leaves the England set up in its strongest position for years to kick on with a new manager in charge. Keep it English FA, how about Eddie Howe?, bright young progessive manager likes to play attacking football.

July 16, 2024 at 12:14 pm #288227Time for a change. Amongst the criticisms there has been glowing testimonies. Current rugby player the other day couldn’t speak highly of his skills, particularly developing a better culture and that they’ve learned from him. Maybe that’s where his strengths lie? Less so, attacking football?
Not sure Howe would want it. If it’s going to be another English man I’d put a sneaky bet on Lampard.

July 16, 2024 at 12:26 pm #288229Yeah, don’t know if he’d be any good or not but could see him being announced. Attacking midfielder, ex International, respected by current players etc. Out of work…
July 16, 2024 at 12:44 pm #288232July 16, 2024 at 1:00 pm #288235Regardless of who’s appointed, he will be hounded remorselessly.
The press even hounded Sir Alf out of the job. They wanted Cloughie, didn’t get him so recommended many others, and in turn hounded each one out.
My vote is for Mike Bassett.July 16, 2024 at 1:11 pm #288237My vote is for Mike Bassett.
I’d prefer Bertie, his liquorice wheels are to die for.
July 16, 2024 at 2:29 pm #288241Fred Bassett; would hound any opposition of the pitch.

Bloody Hell!
Even Sunderland don’t want Lampard!
July 16, 2024 at 2:38 pm #288244Bet he’s put himself forward though.
July 16, 2024 at 4:51 pm #288248Excellent news .. hes gone .
July 16, 2024 at 5:03 pm #288249Celebrating with a dry stroke of the chin?
July 16, 2024 at 5:56 pm #288251When you look back at their records, England managers have been much of a muchness. So maybe our expectations are too high.
Southgate’s win percentage was a tad under 60%. Very similar to the records of Hodgson, Erikson, Hoddle and Greenwood.
I was surprised that the well thought of Sir Bobby Robson and El Tel Venables who both got the team to semifinals scored below 50%. So it would seem that it’s not so much about winning as about performances.
The two managers with Scunny connections were pretty pants. Capello scored highly with 66.7% wins.
Then of course there’s Fat Sam with 100%!
July 16, 2024 at 7:04 pm #288252Not just about win percentages for me. It’s as much about the style of play and performances. Robsons win ratio doesn’t surprise me because his sides were not performing fantastically up until Italia 90. Venables had a short tenure so not much to go on there. Also got to take in to account the talent at their disposal. The options in 1990 and 1996 were not as good on various levels IMO.

July 16, 2024 at 7:17 pm #288253Lineker, Barnes, Beardsley, Waddle, Platt, Pearce, Wright, Walker, Campbell, Gascogne, Sheringham, Shearer, Redknapp, McManaman?
Reckon we had comparable talent around then.

July 16, 2024 at 9:57 pm #288261Good luck to him. Nice bloke who handled criticism with a huge amount of decorum. Rarely able to get a tune out of an embarrassment of riches though.

July 16, 2024 at 10:01 pm #288262All those critics of Southgate will be wishing for him back when in future we’re down to the level of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland ie either not qualifying for tournaments or going out at the group stage!
July 16, 2024 at 10:48 pm #288265I doubt that, given the increased size of the tournaments. We were qualifying before, mostly, and England were bailed out by moments of player magic this time round.

July 17, 2024 at 12:35 am #288267I wonder what Brian Robson is doing these days? Captain Marvel would certainly have the respect of the players.
July 17, 2024 at 7:32 am #288271They’d have his respect if they spelled his name right.
July 17, 2024 at 10:09 am #288282Klopp for me, if he’d take the job.

July 17, 2024 at 10:50 am #288283According to Harry Redknapp (interview yesterday) it’s an easy job if you’ve got decent players at your disposal. Not sure how he’d know having not done it himself.

Think Harry meant it’s easy money, particularly if it’s paid cash in a large brown envelope.

July 17, 2024 at 4:23 pm #288294Course it’s an easy job, hundreds of players to pick from split the players into their natural positions put the names in a hat pull each position out and there’s your team. Seeded group Qualifying for euros and world cup, no wage contracts to bother about, less than ten games a year on average to turn up for and if you play pretty poorly blame the fans for to big an expectation of the team. Easy peesy.
July 17, 2024 at 6:23 pm #288299You do have to go to a couple of Premier League games a week to pretend you are checking on players so might struggle to get to so many Iron games.
I’d probably still do it for the £5m though.
