Southport are on a good run of form right now and with 3 wins and 2 draws in their last five matches, will be no push overs, and their 4-0 beating of South Sheilds must be a warning that Tuesdays game will be difficult for us.

I am going for a 1-1 draw, with the attendance being 3,243.

You would hope there is a clause preventing them from playing against us, but looking at the national league rules there doesn’t seem to be an overall rule preventing it.

I skipped through to the bit about loans. If anyone wants to scrutinise the whole rule book, go ahead !

Reading thier fans forum it sounds like they will be struggling to field a strong team.

    4 – 0 to the Iron. :)

Their team selection problems plus Carver and Bennett not available for them in this fixture is music to my ears, hope we can really batter them and set ourselves up for another home win on Saturday.

Elliot in his port match interview from Darlo game stated they wouldn’t be allowed to play against us and Carver has been doing really well for them. Bennett has been playing well for them for the last 3 matches so you would have thought it would massively help us out.

Interesting to read the latest post on Portchat regarding the ref – he refs in the Bootle area just down the road from Southport!
Dont suppose this would happen in the EFL but now we find ourselves in the NLN I suppose the pool of refs is smaller so this is more likely to happen.
Still some may say it shouldn’t be allowed.

Their shrewd old manager will out smart ours i suspect. They will sit back soak it up and get a goal from a set play or break away. With the loans playing he may have tried to take us on which gives us a chance. Teams know how to beat us. JD hasn’t figured out how to beat the sit back teams. Slow tip-tap round the back doesn’t work. We have to move it quicker. Hope to be wrong but i don’t see a win tonight.

Poor first half way to slow, played really well second and ground out the win when it didn’t seem things were going to go our way, not to much defending after we scored we still took it to them, restricted them to half chances, ref was really poor again tonight,

Ref should have sent their guy in dying seconds for a 2 footed lunge.

Yep Awaywego you got it spot on, hope to see another home win Saturday but full back is becoming a problem with injuries cropping up on a regular basis, Barrow coming on to clap the fans at the end on crutches looked worrying, his ankle heavily strapped looked really swollen. Ref was absolute garbage throughout.

Another completely inept refereeing performance, some of the decisions tonight were baffling.

Steady performance from us tonight. Certainly feel we could have put them under more pressure in the first half. but when we stepped up the tempo the goal felt inevitable. Job done and on to Saturday.

Was slightly disappointed with the crowd, was hoping we could start bringing a few casuals in and build on a feel good factor.

Ref was terrible. He’d lost control by the end. If the game had gone on another minute there would have punches thrown as our lads had clearly had enough of it.

Southport’s best chances were created by, yes you’ve guessed it.
    Us.
At times it was quite scary. A better team would have buried them.
Agree about the ref, did anyone get a card?

Kelly is a few weeks away, as is Ogle. Barrows wanted to carry on despite having his ankle swell up but was obviously taken off so may be ok for weekend.

Moving on to the ref performance, god above he was bad. Whitehall was absolutely awful and that chance he missed was bordering on comical. I hope a club takes pity on us and loans us a striker to supplement Elliot and Whitehall.

Ref – four notches below the dizzy heights of average!
    Inconsistency was unbelievable.
No red for the thug at the end? – 2/10.

Scales got booked first half (actually correctly !!) and there was a yellow shown after that horror tackle in the last minute, I presume it was the offending player but it could have been for anything with that ref.
That was Clunans worse game so far, but it is all about the results – we have to get out of this shithouse league – and we did hit the woodwork twice so easily could have been 3.

Special mention to the linesman(dugout side) who got nearly as many things wrong as the ref. Clear scunny throw ins given to them when he wasn’t even looking. Have to remind ourselves we have the dregs of referees at this level.
We need to play with more urgency and press. Previous poster was right / the mistakes we made were far too many and a league 2/NL club would’ve made us pay.

It’s can be attractive to watch when we’re making 20 to 30 passes out from the back (and sideways), messing with the opposition’s shape and pulling it about to create holes. But the effort becomes pointless when we get into a shooting position and then just pass it sideways again with, often, less chance of scoring or the move completely breaking down. That’s when, for me, patience with Jimmy Dean’s style wears really thin. Being a little more direct up front wouldn’t go amiss.

A reasonable performance on most of the pitch although we gave the ball away too often with wayward (simple) passes. However absolutely dire in both penalty areas. Plenty of shots on target but, with the exception of the goal, all straight at the keeper, should have been another 6. Defensively frightening, better finishers would have buried us, even Carver and Bennett would have scored I reckon.

We missed Will and his constructive forward play.
It was Clunan’s worst game I’ve seen.

Kouogun playing their striker in was something to behold…

    Inconsistency was unbelievable.
No red for the thug at the end? – 2/10.

There was a period in the second half where he and the linesman near the dugout got 5/6 fairly simple decisions wrong in a row.

This included when the Southport striker beat Boyce for pace and was running on goal, Boycey shoved him over and not even a free kick was awarded.

I’m never one to jump on officials but the standard falls off a cliff once you drop down to this level.

If Carver and Bennett are doing so well at Southport then why aren’t they with us.Those two have got to be better than Whitehall (who is a joke) and Elliott

I suspect that, just like Torpey, Whitehall “does things you can’t see”…

A comment that suggests to me that you haven’t seen Carver and Bennett play for Scunny.

We looked a lot more dangerous when Elliot replaced Whitehall and actually gave their defenders something to worry about. I like Whitehall, but there are too many games where he pretty much offers nothing (he’s scored a whopping 2 goals from open play in the last 15, one apiece in the 6 goal hammerings of Spenny and Bishop’s S).

Elliot needs a run in the team and I reckon he’ll start finding the back of the net on a regular basis.
