I don’t get to GP as often as I’d like these days and the Marine game was my first match since seeing us lose to Curzon Ashton last season. What a difference a few months make!
Straight away, GP looks so much better after all the work that has been done on the exterior. Still plenty of things to square up inside but after over a decade of stasis, it’s great to see the ground being properly cared for.
On the pitch, I cannot believe how good Alfie Beestin was. He’s obviously spent plenty of time in the gym and held the ball up brilliantly, whilst his first touch was like velvet and his passing excellent. Everything but the goal for him this time.
I was also seriously impressed by Clunan, a player who previously had really annoyed me for his constant moaning to the ref & sideways passing. Under Butler, he’s still trying to referee the game but his passing & tackling were much improved on last season and he was only just behind Beestin for my man-of-the-match.
I don’t know anything about Fishburn but I liked his movement in the box and I think he’ll give defences plenty to think about this season.
Butler also impressed me by changing the formation after 20 minutes, going to 4-4-2 to try to give Marine more problems. Not seen tactical flexibility for a couple of seasons, have we?
There’ll be plenty of challenges ahead and I think at the moment we definitely lack pace in the team and Marine did have a few half-chances, but overall I thought Saturday was a really positive day, both on & off the pitch. Up the mighty Iron!
I’m positive we need to go 4-4-2
or the wing backs also go forward as well sit back and, are seen crossing a ball or even are in the opponents box receiving the cross. If Burrows/Denton wont/cant do this then replace them or the formation
