I wonder if today’s resignation has anything to do with things like this:

Surely the whiter than white SNP, whose problems in Scotland just have to come from England, aren’t a bunch of shysters? They do have corruption investigations going on; I wonder if they have found some murky secrets.

It will be amusing to see the cybernat meltdown about how this is all a Tory plot, and these are all smears, after (rightfully) pouring scorn over Tory corruption.

Gender Reform Bill the main reason, I’ve been told. No idea how accurate that is.

I’m sure people will give different reasons for her resignation, depending on their agenda.

I am slightly sceptical over the gender bill. She did slump in the polls, but I didn’t think it was terminal. However, you’re right in that it’s all speculative at the moment.

She’s struggled of late with the gender reform bill and independence importance said to be down to 45% with the Scottish people, I think like a few politicians after several years in charge she has simply run out of road. It’s probably time they had a fresh start as leader.

I can imagine there will indeed be many who say it’s a Tory or establishment plot, with no evidence whatsoever. Personally I blame Starmer. Or Blair. Same thing innit?

Those who are deemed as ‘right on’ and sufficiently progressive can never be at fault, according to their followers, so it probably will be one of those suspects.

It’s just one seat projection from one poll, but I am still amused:

May this trend continue and have the Nats collapse. Scottish politics deserves better than the excuse laden, corrupt, cultish SNP.

This Kate Forbes thing is a fuss over little. She is free to believe what she wants, people are free to withdraw support if they don’t like her beliefs. There is a question over why the SNP members were not bothered about something so obvious before, but it doesn’t detract from the point.

All this talk of how unfair it is that she is being damned fails to get how many SNP members might not subscribe to those views, find them disagreeable and don’t think someone like that should lead their party. Which they are perfectly entitled to do in a free country.

A great and eloquent article by Kenan Malik, who is one of the finest liberal journalists with balance. There’s a reason he writes for The Observer and not The Guardian
