The Sin Bin – to be trialed at a senior level in football.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/67549886
Ice Hockey has penalised transgressions since the start of the last century… players initially standing off ice.
The physical ‘cooler box’ was introduced in the 1930s.Tiger Williams leads the way in ice hockey with 3,971 minutes on the slab of shame.
An ice hockey game is of 60 minutes duration… so, the temperamental Tiger spent the equivalent of 66 full games on the naughty step!
Ice Hockey has 2, 4, 5 & 10 minute penalties dependant upon the offence.
1981 saw the introduction of the Sin Bin in Rugby League in England.
2001 saw its debut in Rugby Union.
I must have being banging on about wanting to see it introduced in football for 15 plus years.
Whilst we are at it – make the National League, the EFL L3 with 4 up/down to L2. Another of my ‘pet campaigns’
Come on football… keep up!

November 29, 2023 at 8:36 am #277525I guess with the sin bin it’s not permanent – like that dreadful penalty against Newcastle United. It should make players think twice about abusing refs – which would eventually lead to more (and better) refs coming into the game. It’s worth a trial

Officials don’t get things “wrong”, they make decisions you disagree with. Look at the laws, they’re almost exclusively based on the referee’s opinions.
Which is, of course, why VAR doesn’t work and never will.
November 29, 2023 at 9:17 am #277530Won’t this just lead to more time wasting tactics when a team is down to 10 for 5 or 10 minutes?
November 29, 2023 at 11:52 am #277532Ive always believed footballers that cheat – abuse the ref – time waste etc are a reflection of the teams manager.
So if he tells them not to do it then it shouldnt happen – if they ignore his instructions they get subbed/dropped.
But we all know that no modern day manager has the balls to do that in particular the top leagues.
So until they do it will continue….with yet more VAR interference – so pleased its not in our league :)

November 29, 2023 at 2:08 pm #277543Not much comment about bias IMO, now ineptitude is another matter.

March 6, 2024 at 12:12 pm #282164A sin bin would be a great way of punishing players for diving, blatantly trying to get others sent off, and abusing referees. Maybe other things like kicking the ball away when a free kick is awarded and instead of booking players for over exuberant goal celebrations. Could really benefit football, by stopping unnecessary bookings.

Bloody hell Whitehall would only play twenty minutes a game, mind you he’s doing that most games now without a sin bin.
