As I thought, no Whitehall, but Scales deemed fit. Boyce in starting 11 with Evan’s Kougan and Nicholson, so no weakness to their high ball set pieces, but Boyce up top? Think I’d rather have Evan’s in midfield with Boyce at CB. At least that might nullify their creative player. With the height we should pose a threat at set pieces and long throws. Roberts, Beestin and Scales can attack on the ground!Revised prediction, Draw or one goal reverse defeat!if Whitehall and Carlton aren’t
September 21, 2024 at 2:31 pm #291037Seems ultra defensive set up. Hope we’re not picking to nullify them. Reckon Boyce is in the back 3 and Evans as a sitting midfielder, don’t think Butler is that impressed with Shrimptom (or Fishburn if Boyce is up top?!). Shows how light we are up top though, hope they can dip into the loan market and get a decent league reserve.
September 21, 2024 at 3:48 pm #291039Half-time; 1-0 to Scarborough (Dom Tear). Good game so far, a bit feisty at times but we look a bit over run.
September 21, 2024 at 3:52 pm #291040When you take the field with a keeper and 6 defenders it doesn’t leave much room for footballers.
Game so far reflects that.

September 21, 2024 at 3:52 pm #291041I told Mrs Lesgeo at 2-45 that our first defeat was coming this afternoon.
I never make predictions but the passing recently has been so poor against solid opposition …
Go on Iron. Prove me wrong!September 21, 2024 at 4:57 pm #291042Sigh!

September 21, 2024 at 4:58 pm #291043Honeymoon period over now.
We seem a tad one dimensional and predictable?September 21, 2024 at 4:58 pm #291044Similar to last season, weve been rummbled, no plan B, not enough up front.
September 21, 2024 at 5:00 pm #291045I don’t like 3 CBs but it’s worked so far, 4 is just ridiculous. How do Brogan, Rowley & Shrimpton feel being behind Evans for a midfield start?
September 21, 2024 at 5:06 pm #291046We just couldn’t cope with Harry Green. He bossed the game.
September 21, 2024 at 5:08 pm #291047When I saw the starting 11 I knew we wouldn’t win and suspected we might lose. That was an over cautious selection again overrating the opposition and no confidence in going out to win the game. Poor, poor.

September 21, 2024 at 6:14 pm #291048A consistent viewpoint on this board last season was playing one striker didn’t work. No surprises then when it won’t work this season . If neither Whitehall nor Carlton are fit to play next Saturday, then we need a quality striker in for the Oxford City game otherwise again we will struggle to break down their defence. Losing the odd game away to teams who will be in the mix isn’t a poor omen. Failing to beat a side in the bottom our when playing them at home could well be!

September 21, 2024 at 6:26 pm #291049Time to bring in a loan forward for a month?
September 21, 2024 at 6:33 pm #291050We have now had a run of games in which the play has been increasingly unsatisfactory.
Poor passing, an absence of players fighting to get on the end of long throws are just the tip of what I suspect might be an iceberg.
It’s all very well saying “But we’re top of the league!” But if we carry on in this vein we could easily end October a good half dozen points behind top.1 user thanked author for this post.
September 21, 2024 at 6:41 pm #291051Yes, the “we are still top of the league” should not be used as a rallying point for inaction, by the players, management team, or the board. A slight move of the tiller now may well correct a major drift off course which will only become evident as the season progresses!

September 21, 2024 at 7:24 pm #291052Where would you propose getting a quality striker from Phil ?
My suggestion is Tyrell Sellars-Fleming on loan from Hull.September 21, 2024 at 7:27 pm #291053Really like Evans but playing him in midfield was a calculated risk that failed. The game passed him by because he is not mobile enough to play there.
He is also comfortably the best passer out of defence of our 4 centre backs so we missed him there. Some would say he is the only CB that can pass well from the back.
Early games from Nicholson had me wondering why he was not playing in the EFL. The last 3 or 4 games have demonstrated why. His passing is really poor. Hey ho that’s why he is playing in the NLN.
In our early games we refused to let direct physical teams suck us into playing their game. Today we totally got sucked into it and came off second best.
Butler in his interview said that was not the intention but his team selection suggests otherwise. Hope him and the team learn from it.
Have to praise Beestin today. He worked tirelessly to try and make something out of the hopeless punts forward nearly making something happen from 3 or 4 of them.
I do agree with Butler that it’s not the end of the world. We’re top of the league after 9 games. We all make mistakes and have off days. Championship winning sides learn from them and come back stronger next game.
Final word on the Scarborough away end. They have a nerve selling 700 away tickets knowing 50% have little chance of seeing anything other than brief glimpses of the game. Nearly as bad as Boston last season.

September 21, 2024 at 7:39 pm #2910564 decent CBs and it seems Butler doesn’t want to disappoint any of them. Maxi has done him a favour by being suspended. IMO if Nicholson didn’t have a long throw he’d be the one to miss out.

September 21, 2024 at 8:35 pm #291058The worse bit about today was it had the feel of a Jimmy Dean approach. One blip is fine but we have not addressed the poor forward distribution and general bad passing. Fitness is all well and good but if you cannot do the basics (and there are players in our squad who are in this category) then you shouldn’t be playing for us. It’s time to get a loan player or two in.

September 21, 2024 at 9:01 pm #291060Can’t disagree with the above; 6 defenders on the field is pretty much surrendering a chance to take a positive foothold in a game.
Don’t want to see Evans in midfield again, he’s had a go but it doesn’t work. Really think we have to start thinking about changing the centre of the park, looking too lightweight in there at times and so often second balls pass us by. Rowley/Brogan must be close to a start.
Pre-match I thought Whitehall’s inclusion may be prove pivotal and it became so, despite Beestin’s best efforts we looked woefully short up there. If the groin strain flares up during the week I’d be tempted to look at a short term loan.
Wing backs both had poor games too, caught in between positions at times and left us too narrow. S’boro to the their credit exposed that left side a few times which ultimately led to a goal.
One of those afternoons where you take your medicine and move on; this result has been on the cards and small changes have to be made to get us back on track; certainly nothing to drastic on what has been a very good start to the year.
Jimmy Deans main failing for me was that he didn’t have a clue how to motivate a side or adapt when things weren’t going our way; it is now Butler’s turn to see if he is up to the test.
September 21, 2024 at 9:42 pm #291064The thing was we all knew we’d need the medicine before a ball was kicked, that’s not how we should be feeling. Whitehall misses his first league game and we looked lossed, glad to get in at half time only one down, no one say we look like a team that’s going to win the league at the moment far from it im afraid, though it is a piss poor league.
Scarborough were nothing much but still had the measure of us today, to many chances going a miss not that we had to many today but kougan should have buried his and whoa what was denton thinking trying a first time volley.
Like others say need a couple of fresh bloods in the squad and quickly.
Ps thought Bennett had a good first half made himself an handful to deal with.and why wasn’t their goalie sent off for handling outside the area.1 user thanked author for this post.
September 21, 2024 at 10:16 pm #291066Because that ref isn’t very good at reffing, bottled it and didn’t apply the laws of the game properly. T Wilson, same ref that disallowed Scales perfectly good goal at Blyth and called Spennymoor away match off last season.
September 21, 2024 at 11:56 pm #291069Well he knows the club from his youth team days. I don’t have anyone particular in mind.

September 22, 2024 at 6:03 am #291079dont know why but i just had a feeling this would be our first loss, this feeling was compounded when seeing the starting line up..had bad day written all over it and so it transpired.
Very poor first half followed by an improved second but zero pace cutting edge up front which was obvious looking at the line up.
Its been a cracking start to the season but have the performances really been that good (convincing) ..i dont think so and the wheels could easily come off without strengthening up front , all we need is Roberts to get crocked again and it really would make it hard to stay where we are now.
Wasnt impressed by AB line up .. Evans in wrong position when Brogan Rowley Shrimpton on the bench and surey Fishy should have started in place of Whall…Cant help think the fans where let down especially on the first half showing.
Question is where can the club find a decent striker who would come here on loan ??? not easy but i hope they can and quickly.
Looked like a terrible ground for away fans negative comments re overcrowding and no view of the game etc etc and the pitch had more repairs than Del Boys Robin Reliant… still i hope everyone had a pleasant day at the seaside candy floss n all ..just a shame the footy had to spoil it.
September 22, 2024 at 8:14 am #291083We couldn’t see a third of the pitch which was probably a blessing in disguise- certainly too many tickets sold in that end.
Atmosphere was non existent too- in fact our away support has been very quiet for some time, in contrast to the home support which has gradually improved.
September 22, 2024 at 8:23 am #291084In fairness wasnt a lot to cheer about especially first half .. although indeed still toppa the league i just get the impression many Iron fans assume we are better than what we actually are. I hope this defeat is a blip and doesnt lead to a turbulent run a la Kiddy wh have done just that.
My pre season pick for promotion Chester going along nicely after a dicky start and will be a litmus test as to just how good or average we are.
heres the Scarbor version of Ironarmy…images of the away end and can see just how bad the view must of been.

September 22, 2024 at 10:22 am #291089Will Evans in CM had to be tried.
Okay. It did not work. So, let’s move on.
I recently wrote that we need a commanding (Bish-style) in CM. That must now be viewed as an essential move in our bid to get promoted. There can be no delay. A point lost here and another there could wreck our entire season.
Fishburn is progressing nicely but cannot lead a forward line with the current demands on him. An experienced loanee forward is therefore essential too.
Delay is dangerous.September 22, 2024 at 11:56 am #291096Butler inept yesterday didn’t he see their goalie was collecting every corner he was massive, has much as I hate short corners we needed that change yesterday but no we carried on the same all game. Same free kicks every time same just lumping it up to Fishborne once he came on.
What is he doing letting Mussie dictate when and what Fitz can do 3 times in added time fitz looked to the dugout looking for the nod to go forward twice he didn’t let him ( that being Mussie)and he only managed to just get past the halfway line for the free kick, as something different why not let him take that last free kick couldn’t have done any worse. Bit more inventive training ground practice needed just to switch when we’re struggling.
Ps thought the ref was one of the better ones this season, just the last ten seconds he got wrong, warned the goalie early doors about time wasting and soon booked him.1 user thanked author for this post.
September 22, 2024 at 2:39 pm #291107Ugly, defensive and very direct long ball under Butler? Who’da thunk it!!
Jokes aside our league performances have been very poor of late and we are hiding behind the guise of our league position, when in reality, we’ve had only a couple of convincing wins and undeservedly scraped a fair few results.
What’s most alarming is just our abysmal our passing is this season. The stuff of nightmares and genuinely wouldn’t look out of a place on a Sunday morning. Considering the football we were playing last season with 10/11 of our starting 11, how have we lost the ability to make simple passes? These are the same players that were dominating possession last season and were criticised for being too ‘tippy tappy’. Now they can’t ‘tip or tap’ to save their lives. We are struggling to string together 3 or 4 basic passes. What’s happened?
Have to agree we need another forward as Fishburn is clearly a work in progress, but a decent midfielder is also essential, as Butler seemingly doesn’t think Brogan or Rowley are up to it. We are desperate for someone with a bit of quality who can get the ball on the ground and get us playing football with some composure. Enough of lumping it forward and hoping Whitehall gets on the end of it. Ideally someone who can create and chip in with goals too as our current midfield are contributing next to nothing goal wise. I think Boyce has scored more so far this season than all our midfielders combined?
Changes needed pronto as Chester gaining momentum after a slow start and we are going the other way.

Agree with that 414 .. especially the first paragraph , despite the final results performances have been far from convincing and IMO we are some what lucky to be where we are currently.
