Working on the assumption Butler will stick with the wingback system, how could it work better offensively at home with the current personnel?
Probably can’t play Roberts as a wing back due to defensive frailties but would Law work any better than Denton / Kelly on the left? Scales or Brogan on the right? I don’t mind the current set up for away games although it is a tough watch at times but would like the wingbacks to be more front footed in the home games to stretch defences and offer genuine width. Irrelevant now but would Sembie Ferris have been worth keeping to play right wing back in home games? Budget constraints I guess?1 user thanked author for this post.
October 20, 2024 at 11:24 am #292171Grandson on holiday so don’t have to go so I shan’t. Think we can all agree a win is a must, can’t really see a problem against them.
October 20, 2024 at 11:57 am #292173must win this and similar ones against the leagues also rans … alas nothing is a given and im not sure this will go well.
Dull predictable unconvincing so im going for a draw .. 1-1 .. @ AAGP AB really should go for it with a 442 0r even 433 but does he have the personal to do that (IMO NO) so expect his current fav wing back set up to remain even though our wing backs arent really wingers more like left n right backs.
Like to see Law get a run of games.
October 20, 2024 at 12:44 pm #292174I think the key is a back 4. Not really fussed what happens in front of that, 4-2,3-3 or even2-3-1. Just get a CB off and a more forward thinking player on.
October 20, 2024 at 1:23 pm #292176The problem is our full backs are defenders. We still make Clunan play as a holding midfielder so we have 6 defensive players. If you class Scales as a box to box midfielder (half defender/half attacker) then we have a keeper and 6.5 defenders with 3.5 attackers.
If our intention was to avoid relegation this would make some kind of sense. In an away game against a promotion rival it possibly makes sense. For the other 40 games of the season it makes no sense at all.
We are unable to create sustained pressure on teams and are forced to constantly play backwards/sideways until someone (usually Nicholson) passes to the opposition. Even when our so called wing backs are high and wide enough to provide the easy out ball they are not good enough to create anything.
Feel sorry for Whitehall, Beestin and Roberts trying to make something from long inaccurate balls up to them with 4 or 5 defenders in close attendance.
Everyone is calling for the “magic bullet” goalscorer that gets 25 goals a season feeding on scraps. Harland would struggle to do that on what we would provide for him.
Whitehall, Beestin and Roberts are top quality forwards at this level and given the right service would score 20 apiece.
If Butler continues to stick to 5 at the back then how about a pair of quick, tricky EFL loanee wing backs?
While we are waiting let’s have Law and Scales playing there in the 5 upcoming (on paper) easier games.

October 20, 2024 at 1:42 pm #292178Frightened of losing
Frightened of attacking. We’ll struggle to attack.Brings us a more defensive approach.
Not been for a while due to work commitments.
I do hope I’m coming away on Tuesday night thinking that’s more like it.2-1 Iron
3,911October 20, 2024 at 1:59 pm #292180AB doesn’t make a secret of his thinking “ If you don’t concede, you can’t lose” and this logic is very commendable when playing away at our promotion rivals. Where it comes unstuck is when we play sides at the AA who get every player behind the ball and try to hit us on the break. All the space is across our back 5 and to keep position, they pass to one another … or play a poor ball through to the front players and lose possession. Posters on this board are correct, if we must play with wing backs then at the AA they have to play 20 yards further forward. Starting with Scales at Right WB and Laws at Left WB is worth a try. They are unlikely to be exposed defensively by a team who have come to “Park the Bus”, although our opponents tactics may change if we go a goal up, so I’d have Barrows and Denton in the bench just in case we had to”hold on” to the one! Who would you play in midfield and who upfront?
October 20, 2024 at 2:53 pm #292181Butler is confusing me (and maybe himself)
He has said repeatedly in interviews “I want to win every game”
He then sets up in an over defensive manner and says, as above,”if you don’t concede you can’t lose”
On the other hand if you score 5 you’re unlikely to lose either, can we try that for a bit and see how it goes?1 user thanked author for this post.
October 20, 2024 at 8:18 pm #292182I feel it’ll be 1-1 (£5 @ 8/1)
I’ll take 0-1 (£5 @ 20/1) too… just in case our forwards maintain their outstanding form… lolOctober 21, 2024 at 4:41 pm #292191Rushall have the same wins, draws and losses as Oxford , surely not another draw
October 21, 2024 at 9:54 pm #292200Think you’ve hit the Nail on the head there MkIron.
Fundamentally, it’s the reason I’d like to see Clunan out the side for a while and give some of the other lads a go. Absolutely no need to have a CDM spraying 10 yard balls wide with 3 Centre backs behind him, get someone in to go more direct or even have a run to make up 10/20 yards.
With regards to the wing backs, Ross had a strong start to the year but has gradually faded off as he’s retreated further into more of a full back role, he often seems to be caught in 2 minds now. With regards to the left side, AS good as Denton is as a left back it’s not the role for him further up, Kelly had a couple of solid games before his injury and seemed more adept at playing that role, perhaps time for another start?

Scoring goals is harder than stopping them.
Defenders are cheap. Attackers are …
Hence, the current situation.
It’s a problem everywhere. Currently, no team has averaged more than around 1.5 goals a game (Chorley).
Boring, tho’.October 22, 2024 at 9:25 am #292202“Scoring goals is harder than stopping them.”
Especially if you have 7 defenders and 4 attackers.
October 22, 2024 at 10:30 am #292203Wish we had 4 attackers Cass.
Whitehall, Beestin and Roberts. I would estimate 10% of Scales and Barrows time is spent attacking and about 5% of Clunan and Denton.
The centre backs go up for corners and long throws which create a chance about every 4 games.

October 22, 2024 at 11:40 am #292205Not gonna travel from Sheffield this evening. Shall watch on Vanarama.
Those who seem confused when AB has apparently contradicted himself – I want to deconfuse a little.
20 points from 10 games. Super stuff.
AB seemed to think that it is reasonable to believe that he can repeat this feat using the current setup.
I disagree. The evidence of my eyes is clear. This is not possible.
I shall be doing a steady count up of points over the games 11 – 20. And so as to be 100% fair to the manager – I am only asking him for a mere 15 points. That would help fuel a promotion push.
25% fewer points than 20 from the next 10 would give me a real boost.
Have I ever wanted more to be proved wrong, I wonder.October 22, 2024 at 11:45 am #29220620 points from 10 games. Super stuff.

October 22, 2024 at 12:47 pm #2922075 home and 5 away. Win all the home games and I’ll forgive him for setting up to draw away. BUT (sorry Andy) will he set up to win at home?

October 22, 2024 at 1:40 pm #292208If we are not set up to give these a good pasting and follow through with a good score line then I’ll sit and go back to picking a choosing games I attend.
Totally getting cheesed off watching dull non entertaining football. Same with England so dull to watch.

October 22, 2024 at 2:07 pm #292209Only 18 points from the first ten last season, do you feel better football wise this season or last.
For me last. suppose it’s the start we had this season being so good and then given the dross of the last month. Having said that by the end of the next ten games last season I pretty much knew we wouldn’t win the league. (Boston away did for me)
Butler really needs to change it round and I really do hope he does.October 22, 2024 at 3:03 pm #292210Agree with what you say about Butler Awaywego but he really won’t.

October 22, 2024 at 5:30 pm #292212I wanted Butler in when it was clear Dean had no plan B, and barely a plan A. I still think he is the man to take us up however he has to adapt, it’s not hard to look at different, more entertaining formations. Setting up not to lose is going to drain attendances and that will drain significant funds out of the club. Many are starting to pick games rather than attend all the time.
October 22, 2024 at 6:39 pm #292213Not losing games is a good way to avoid relegation.
Not winning them is a good way to avoid promotion.
Got to go for it.

October 22, 2024 at 6:59 pm #292214Potential 3-4-3?
October 22, 2024 at 7:15 pm #292215Still 5 defenders Cass.
October 22, 2024 at 7:44 pm #292216Moving in the right direction though.
October 22, 2024 at 8:47 pm #292217We need 5 defenders because their front line of one is skillful, mobile and a constant threat.
Oh hang on it’s Gerry McDonagh.
Still the bet between Nicholson and Barrows on who can give the ball away most under no pressure is going down to the wire.
October 22, 2024 at 9:49 pm #292218Poor first half, but that second half was a lot better and the best we have played for a while. Having Beestin in midfield worked and it was good to see Denton and Barrows come forward. That’s what I expect from now on, even if Rushall were awful.
October 22, 2024 at 10:04 pm #292219October 22, 2024 at 10:06 pm #292220The Fish certainly looked a lot more composed and aided play more than Whitehall today.
