Thousands of football pitches will be built to boost 2030 World Cup bid. The Chancellor promised an additional £11,000,000 funding to support the UK’s 2030 World Cup bid.

When I played local league football in the 70s, 80s & 90s (just) there were good quality pitches all over my area. Most had good facilities: modern clubhouses, some with bars, ample car parking and good playing surfaces.
Over the last thirty years I have seen almost all of them disappear. One is now a prestigious golf course, but most have had houses built on them, or, like the OSG, become the site of a supermarket.
Now the Chancellor announces he’s making funding available for thousands of new pitches in a bid to secure the 2030 World Cup. Not quite sure how that works, but hey-ho!
Call me an old cynic, but once the bid has been decided on, win or lose, what will happen to the land cleared for the new pitches? Will it in turn disappear beneath housing estates or supermarkets?
And who will play on said pitches? Will new leagues be created? If so, who will run them, and for how long?
More Tory popularism or a good idea? Got my doubts personally.

October 28, 2021 at 2:23 pm #216642Well its another distraction from his bullshit budget so I guess he will keep coming out with crap like this for the forseeable future.

October 28, 2021 at 2:47 pm #216644With all bids you have to include a legacy program, unfortunately most fail after the tournament’s just look at Athens, and the Rio Olympic’s legacy now, same with Qatar their grounds will be just a waste of space, think your right about ours who will play on them. Our bid should cost F all as should many other countries who have the grounds and the infrastructure there all ready, instead of trying to buy votes from diddle dong countries and giving the likes of Beckham jolly’s to promote our bid.

October 28, 2021 at 3:03 pm #216645If they don’t reverse the massive cuts to councils, there’s no point at all as councils have got no money to maintain communal facilities like that. It’s one of the reasons why councils have had to sell off land – not just that they could but because they needed to do so.

October 28, 2021 at 4:26 pm #216647They should be talking about developing already well established football grounds, there must be thousands here that could do with government grants to improve them. Then after the World Cup they could let them just keep the upgrades.
I might be dreaming or even barking up the wrong tree. Never mind…

We’ve been there and done that…but only for a favoured London club
