March 2, 2023 at 12:15 pm #256475Prepping for next season? A ‘try before you buy’?
Although he is still under contract for next season at Barrow

2 big lads up front, 2 wingers and 2 long throw FBs – get it in the box!!

I hope this means Dean doesn’t rate Big Gez and is wanting to play Bennett in a 4/4/2 alongside Elliot. Knowing our luck with managers, this will probably mean we’ll still be playing with one up front while sticking Elliot out wide.
Perish the thought.

Prepping for next season? A ‘try before you buy’?
Assumes we’ll be staying full-time?
March 2, 2023 at 7:26 pm #256501I’ve often heard fans chanting the name of his brother, Gordon!

March 2, 2023 at 7:30 pm #256502Jimmy sounded a bit uncommitted with the new man. Perhaps was on Nelson’s list.
March 2, 2023 at 8:08 pm #256504Completely the opposite, sanfran. I’ve just heard the interview where he was talking about Bennett. Dean comes across as he genuinely believes he’ll improve us, so I take from it that he doesn’t really rate Big Gez.
I very well could be wrong but that’s the way he came across.
Fingers crossed we get 4/4/2
March 3, 2023 at 6:04 am #256507A goal every four and a half games is not what we need right now, I am struggling to understand the sheer numbers coming in at this stage of a season, it must cause confusion amongst the players? It’s certainly confusing me!
As I said on another thread, the amount of new signings we have brought in need a pre-season to gel and find the best combination, not a relegation battle!
March 3, 2023 at 8:28 am #256508John Gayle was worse than 1 in 12 but look how he transformed our scoring.
I have been begging for such a style of player for more than five years.
Just gotta hope he’s good enough. Dean seems to think so.1 user thanked author for this post.
March 3, 2023 at 9:07 am #256510But do we have any Eyres and Forresters to profit, I think not.
March 3, 2023 at 9:18 am #256512Well, Elliott. Much may be expected of him. A BTG player brings midfielders and wingers more into the game. But no. Probably not, Cass. But any step in a right direction is still to be welcomed.
Note how many teams in the NL have this kind of player and use them successfully – usually against us!
Do hope Dean’s optimism is warranted.March 3, 2023 at 12:37 pm #256521John Gayle was worse than 1 in 12 but look how he transformed our scoring.

My point is I thought we already had that in McDonagh, if we were going to sign another front man then for me it needed to be someone to feed off him.

March 3, 2023 at 1:10 pm #256523Elliot or Carver when he is fit I assume are there for that role. They are certainly not lone front men. I know neither are likely to be 20 goal a season men but let’s face it you don’t find them for buttons if you are bottom of the National League.
Personally I would stick Wilson up there with the big man. He is too quick and clever for most centre backs at this level. Shields and Ferris either side to provide crosses and Bunker and Shrimpton to hold in midfield. Play it wide when it’s on and play it long when it’s not.
Ogle and Leake to get forward at every opportunity to support the wide men. 4-2-4 with the ball and 4-4-2 without it. Give it a go FFS.
March 3, 2023 at 1:31 pm #256525I’d like to see how well young Wilson would do upfront with a half decent target man.
March 3, 2023 at 5:07 pm #256528Torps was awesome, Pat.
I couldn’t grasp why there were so many who didn’t get it?
Today, a guy of his attributes would cost well over half a million.March 3, 2023 at 5:26 pm #256529The chances of getting a “goal every other game” striker when it’s March and you’re 23rd in the National League are extremely slight.
Unless we already have one in the building we’ll be feeding off scraps.
Which pretty much describes our forward line this season.
March 3, 2023 at 8:15 pm #256536Elliot scored 5 in 7 for Gateshead so he obviously is effective at this level but he won’t do any good upfront on his own, he needs somebody to play off. I just hope Dean partners him with Bennett because a lone front man he is not.
Sounds like Dean doesn’t really rate Big Gez, hence why he’s gone in for Bennett. Let’s be honest here, he’s a lump and put’s himself about a bit but he was ok in the air and wasn’t that great at holding the ball up.
More I read about this Bennett, he sounds more like a proper Torpey type..which is exactly what we need, providing Dean plays him with Elliot.
March 3, 2023 at 10:50 pm #256540I would love Bennett to be the new Torpey ( but I guess these days without the elbows ) and the reason some of our fans slated Torps, well it’s all about opinions as usual but in mine, they just didn’t get it. Watch the game for 90 minutes and see what some players actually do, Brian Laws best comment IMO when asked about Torpeys contribution in one particular game after he’d been receiving stick was ” ask their centre half”, followed by ” he won every header he went up for ( 12 I believe ) and won every one”. Lots of people didn’t get Torps, lot of people don’t watch football properly, again IMO.
