Can’t say I am shocked. I am sure it’s all a conspiracy and it can’t be because of his own actions.

Yep it’s happening in the states too, right wing conspiracy nut Alex Jones is getting a right arse kicking in court and will be fined very heavily after lying repeatedly on his news channel causing the relatives of children murdered in the Sandy Hook carnage, which he said was all fabricated. It’s about time serial liars and conspiracy nut jobs were brought to account when it’s constantly being used as a political weapon in the teeming mass that is social media, including you tube channels.

That’s true IA. And most of it is used by the political right as a distraction from talking about other, far more important issues such as growing inequality, climate change, the unsustainable consumption of resources, Me2, BLM, transgender rights, the national past, and injustices experienced by minorities of all kinds.

It’s obvious that the free market is broken and failing to deliver, so it has to lie (hence Trump, Johnson Farage and co) and / or talk about something else as a distraction.

Something else, like what? Like Brexit, daft conspiracy theories put about by Alex Jones and others, or abortion issues, or a ‘war on woke’.

See how these issues often get a moral dimension attached to them, which makes it hard for the hard of thinking to disagree, e.g. the EU is said to be ‘undemocratic’ which is morally wrong (and ignores the undemocratic voting system here, or the unelected House of Lords, lifetime peerages, the Lords spiritual, etc. etc. We also see that immigrants are often labelled illegal, and so they become morally wrong. We hear that abortion rights are morally wrong. And if you disagree with how your national past is represented, you’re unpatriotic, which is close to being morally wrong, too…

Of course it’s just nonsense, a distraction from the sick state of the economy and environment. But if you’re white, elderly, reasonably well off and feel served by the current arrangements, you’re less likely to see it that way. And if you’ve had a lifetime steeped in religion, and let a book like the Tora, Koran or Bible etc. do your thinking for you, you almost certainly won’t. You don’t want to talk about diversity and equality and change. They’re seen as threatening. Even worse, religion will be interpreted as giving support to monsters like Farage and Trump, support which is thicker than a whale omelette.

And that concludes today’s Ted Talk.

I guess you don’t follow the American media much JI, I can understand why as you probably fit into the category Gurny was talking about. Glad you feel comfortable with these things being discussed above.

It’s a bit too conspiratorial for my liking. Some of the stuff is nonsense, but I don’t think there’s a fiendish plan to distract. Fox News, and similar awful outlets, see it as a money maker.

Well thats putting it mildly and yes Fox is all about making money at the expense of decent journalism. The Trump fanbase is such a cult now that anything he says or does is fine by them and Fox until recently supported him still regardless, that has changed in recent weeks with Ron De Santis and even Mike Pence getting more coverage at the expense of Trump. How long that will last is anyones guess but Trump is fuming with Fox because they are ignoring him more then he wants, he hates being ignored, it is not the narcissist way to be ignored.

De Santis is as bad as Trump. These people aren’t saviours of the Republicans. The party is rotten and has been for a long time.

I did not follow it so long ago but a lot of political speakers in the US say it goes as far back as Reagan, that’s when the real rot set in for the GOP and at least when Nixon turned out to be a crook back in the 70’s, the Republicans in Congress were on the verge of booting him out till he resigned. If you see some of the Trump supporters being interviewed at some his rallies, the ignorance and lack of a basic sense of right and wrong and just common sense and decency is quite astonishing, yet these are the people he will not have time for in reality.

Brilliant DM, I remember Roddy and his boat but I’d quite forgot about Guinea Pig burning up the forest in his Jeep, it’s a classic. Hammy was quite the tearaway in his youth, urging his mate to go faster. 😂
