Hallam’s always injured. McAtee can never be arsed to break sweat. Tom Pugh has never even had a chance, seems a strange one.
If Hallam signs on again I’ll be fuming…he’s never fecking fit. As said above, McAtee just can’t ever put the effort in.
I hope to god neither sign. Pugh I don’t really care about…he’ll end up being a squad filler.

May 13, 2021 at 7:19 pm #206931SCARY, to put it mildly.
But some who turned down contracts may get a shock.

May 13, 2021 at 7:37 pm #206934Incredible!! How many starts between them this season? One seldom fit and one seldom picked when he is fit.
Agree with mick about those that turned down reduced contracts, might want to reconsider if nothing better turns up. To be fair none of them have done enough this season to command big money and there’ll be masses of competition for jobs. 72 EFL clubs reducing their squads by say an average of 8-10 means players from a 3rd bottom L2 club won’t be among the most desirable on offerMay 13, 2021 at 7:41 pm #206936Josh Morris and Leon Clark released by Fleetwood, probably offloading high earners like lots of clubs.
May 13, 2021 at 7:55 pm #206940Sorry meant to say Fleetwood and Shrewsbury.
May 13, 2021 at 8:02 pm #206942The squads a reflection of how this clubs been run into the ground in my opinion.
It’s nothing short of disastrous and without 4/5/6 real quality additions were absolutely f**ked next season
I think we all knew who was going/staying but when you look at what’s left in each position it’s frightening how bad it is.

Stranger things have happened. Like with Jordan Clarke last year.
May 13, 2021 at 11:34 pm #206977Are the Swanns on the list?
No Inspector, it is May, so you cannot move Swanns at this time of year because they will be sitting on eggs, or should that read “nest eggs” with them just taking the clubs assets in its ground and land.

May 14, 2021 at 9:33 am #206997And let’s not forget that in this country Swanns are protected by law.

May 14, 2021 at 10:51 am #207007There’s little doubt that the majority we release will head for the NL, although many of them are young enough to get another crack at the EFL if they’re good enough.
I am, however, very interested to see at what level KVV, Eisa, McGahey, Gilliead and Karacan are playing next season and how regularly they start.May 14, 2021 at 11:06 am #207010And Bedeau. (No option to edit)
May 14, 2021 at 11:43 am #207018It’s fair to say we’re all pretty shocked at the depth of the cuts to the squad yesterday. But there may be one, small positive. I should quantify two things before I write anything further – firstly, I’m no Swann apologist or fan. The last few years have been a disaster; secondly, I’m basing these thoughts on the wages list posted online on the Salary Sport website.
So, here goes: based on their figures, the released players will cut the weekly wage bill by nearly £22k (or £1.13m per year of the £1.95m annual wage bill for 2020/21). Those cuts include KVV (£4k). McGahey (£3.2k), Clarke (£3.1k) & Gilliad (£2.5k). A quick flick through the (alleged) wage bills of the other League Two clubs and there are only 13 players earning more than KVV.
With say £15k per week to play with (assuming that is what remains in the playing budget after the releases, ie £7k pw or £360k less than this season’s budget) that should be ample money to be able to sign seven “decent” players while still offering them a “decent” League Two wage. Interestingly, Karacan doesn’t feature on the list of player wages so I have no idea what will be saved by the very poor decision to not offer him a new deal. Again, based on a scan through the wages of this season’s successful sides, a maximum of £2k per week should secure the type of players needed to at the very least drag us into the top half of the table.
Anyway, that’s a speculative positive-ish spin on yesterday’s news. Let’s just hope and pray our recruitment this time around is better than last and lessons have been learnt. Unlikely, I know, but we can but hope!

May 14, 2021 at 12:17 pm #207026My question would be that IF Eisa, McGahey, Gilliead and KvV WERE offered new deals and THEY turned them down. Why was that?
Was it that the new contracts offered were so far below what they were earning they thought it derisory?
Was it that they think they should be playing in L1 or higher?
Was it a combination of the above (ie they think they can get more money playing for Blackpool or Ipswich)?
Or was it that they’re so pissed off with the Mickey Mouse set up at Scunthorpe United that they’ve had enough?
May 14, 2021 at 12:32 pm #207030Hey, leave the Mouse out of it! Wile E Coyote set up would be more accurate! Big plans, utter failure.

Agents??
They are/were our better players but we have had 3 terrible seasons with most of the above. Josh makes a good point, if the wages are correct, can we find 7-8 decent players who are good enough and want to play for the team.
It’s a big bloody IF based on previous recruitment and whether Cox can manage and motivate them. Based on this year’s record – it’s a MASSIVE IF.

May 14, 2021 at 1:18 pm #207039What were people expecting? If the poll is anything to go by 40% won’t be going back next year, I guess Swanny will have to accrue more debt for the club to cobble a team together.

May 14, 2021 at 1:28 pm #207042Based on this year’s record – IF.
Written by David Gates, originally recorded by Bread but made popular and a number one over here for Kojak. Who loves ya baby!!!!
May 14, 2021 at 2:07 pm #207045That list sums up our intention going forwards. After the announcement that we are reducing the budget and post match meanderings of the manager regarding player availability through a season.
We then are treated with the news we have offered Jordan Hallam a new deal, he is a good lad and I do feel sorry for him but in 2 seasons he has started 7 games !!
Might not know much of the thought processes of the mastermind opting for this path but what I do know is that I will not be following the pied piper. Enough is enough especially after the waste of home grown. Charlie Barks – I hope that comes and bites back very hard.

If you offer an under-23 player a contract, on the same or improved terms, then you are entitled to a fee if he moves on. Not the case with older players. So may as well offer Hallam a contract if you think he’s promising.

This is the club that gave Andy Dales a 1 year extension last summer remember. Great investment that was, will Hallam be similar?
May 14, 2021 at 4:30 pm #207051Just having a quick look through the retained lists (not many have played their hands, yet) and a few names popped up as being available on free transfers which may be of interest:
Hakeem – till only 24 & definitely someone who can shine in League Two.
Lewis McLeod – was a great prospect at Rangers and looked very good at Championship level with Brentford. Injury record would make it a gamble but he’s still only 26.
Josh Morris – another former alumni, of course. Doubt he’d want to come back but is only 29 and he may want a return to his happiest hunting ground.
Jack Bonham – 27 year old goalkeeper with plenty of experience with Watford, Brentford, Bristol Rovers & Gillingham
Christian Walton – 25 year old keeper with lots of loan experience after a career at Brighton. Then there are the “not a chance in hell we could afford them” freebies:
Henri Lansbury – another “old friend” released on a free by Bristol City. Rather amazingly, he’s already 30. Was it really THAT long ago?!
Alan Judge – 32 but still a quality player. Way out of our pay league. There are seven names I think would be excellent for us. But also seven names I fear we won’t be anywhere near attracting to the Sands Siro this summer.
But as I say, most clubs are yet to announce who’s staying and who’s going. There will be options out there!
May 14, 2021 at 5:13 pm #207059What were people expecting? If the poll is anything to go by 40% won’t be going back next year, I guess Swanny will have to accrue more debt for the club to cobble a team together.
And who will shoulder that debt if he does?
May 14, 2021 at 5:38 pm #207062“The club” I said on the post Alcy. And yes that means whoever takes over next will inherit the debt.
May 15, 2021 at 10:47 am #207086Maybe some of our OOCs should read this and reconsider their contract offers.
“Sergio Aguero is closing in on a free transfer to Barcelona – but could be forced into taking a 40 per cent pay cut. (The Sun)”
So it must be true!
May 15, 2021 at 11:19 am #207088Most clubs in the lower divisions are getting rid of the high earners, I am sure a lot of them when they realise there is no big pay cheques will then be happy to to take a drop rather than go on the dole or work in a factory or office.
May 15, 2021 at 11:55 am #207093Yes, quite a few L1 & L2 clubs have issued their released list (BBC Sport Football on Transfers page) and whilst none are as long as our record breaking seventeen, they make interesting reading.
It is noticeable that high earners feature on many of them. Probably understandable given the massive loss of gate receipts. So we are not alone in cutting our cloth.
Some will not have too much trouble finding a new club, but others will definitely have to accept a salary reduction to secure employment.
So there will be decent players out there and if clubs go about it in the right way there’s no reason why a competitive squad can’t be assembled on a budget.
The question is will Scunthorpe United go about it in the right way?
Most clubs will have been monitoring players. They’ll have experienced scouts and will be talking to knowledgeable ex-professionals. The manager and coaches will be involved in the recruitment process and the assembled squad will be a balance of experience and youth and not overloaded in any one department.
This doesn’t seem to have been the case with us for the past few seasons. We have a chairman who is now more interested in property than people. A chief scout who has barely started shaving, and a manager who must think he’s just walked bruised but otherwise unscathed out of a plane crash! We use wide-boy agents who could sell sand to Arabs and have an unbalanced squad.
It would be possible to rebuild the team, but on past records I remain sceptical.

May 15, 2021 at 11:56 am #207094Some of our younger players recently released are on just above ‘Living Wage’ !!
Don’t know how much lower we can offer than next to nothing !
May 15, 2021 at 9:29 pm #207145And let’s not forget that in this country Swanns are protected by law.
I am not so sure about that Northumbiron, Swanns were known to lose a court case which cost the club over a million pounds, And I am sure a Swann did not get backing from the law when it came in contact with the NLCC, but I agree that their nesteggs will probabnly stay in their clutch. I just wish that they would turn into ugly ducklings, but we all know that their worth will be a prized asset in a few short years.
