April 11, 2022 at 7:35 pm #235437What a brilliant video which illustrates just how far the club has fallen whilst demonstrating a lot of what is wrong at the club.
The strong togetherness that was there of everyone at the club is evident something which has been missing for many years with the constant stream of inadequate players passing through club.5 users thanked author for this post.
April 12, 2022 at 8:42 am #235449That was quite the hobby: the club was “self-sustainable”, the accounts showing a loss of just £16,000.
“We now have a club, virtually debt-free, playing in the Championship League for the first time in almost 50 years. Season ticket sales are at a record level of 4,000, double the 06/07 season and revenue from the Football League will increase by at least £1.3 million. It is your directors’ intention to increase the players’ budget by a further million pounds and to support Nigel as much as is prudently possible to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.”
We really didn’t know just how good we had it!

April 12, 2022 at 8:56 am #235453We had a shocking pitch but brilliant players, now have a brilliant pitch with shocking players they say a good players can play on anything that group of players certainly could.
Some of the best attacking football I have seen! sharp was the darling but I loved Cleveland Taylor, you tell how he was going to play in the warm up if he was on it in then you just knew he would tear the left back to bits.

April 12, 2022 at 9:14 am #235454Loved Cleveland and Beags but you could never beat Wayne Bullimore playing through the thirds and dictating the tempo.

April 12, 2022 at 9:30 am #235456I wonder if Mr Swann could be persuaded to watch this, especially the end bit where Nige mentions “it’s all about the supporters”
Just a thought but could we get another season or two out of Joe & Billy?
I can dream can’t I, makes a change from nightmares!!4 users thanked author for this post.
April 12, 2022 at 9:33 am #235457I reckon Sharp’s got a few more seasons left at a higher level before coming back to us!
God, I’d forgotten how bad the GP pitch was that season, I remember a lot of fans being worried it was going to cost us promotion.
April 12, 2022 at 10:18 am #235459A brilliant video Pat’OCake thank you very much for this. We have mixed emotions watching this and we shall watch it again. We feel great pride in Scunthorpe United watching this, great memories, and feel so lucky to have experienced these great times. We also feel great anger and disbelief at where one man and his family have taken us. They should never be allowed near any football club ever again. They tried to run it as a business and failed abysmally so you ask yourself should he ever be allowed to run any business again. Swann is not fit to even wipe the soles of Steve Whartons shoes, and the same goes for Hill in comparison to Brian Laws. Brian was at Scunthorpe for ten years and over that time his management skills vastly improved to gain success for our Club. I have lots of sympathy for our younger supporters who have only been fans whilst the disgraceful Swanns have been here and have not witnessed the fabulous successful years. We are lucky we have been supporters for the last sixty odd years through the good and bad times. But these last years under the Swanns have wrecked our Club and their name will always leave a disgusting taste in our mouths for where they have taken our beloved Scunthorpe United.

April 12, 2022 at 10:40 am #235460I feel very proud and privileged to have worked at our Scunthorpe United for over ten years and felt and witnessed the success we had with promotions, crowds of 5000 plus and several Wembley appearances. The club was then run as one from the very top to the very bottom. From the Chairman down to the programme sellers and everyone in between. This is what breeds success. We also had a good affiliation within the community and fans were considered an essential part of the club. I saw both sides being an ardent supporter and also an employee. The Swanns came in and most of the existing staff either left or were made redundant, people who had been loyal to the club over many years. I was lucky as had already retired so didn’t have to work under the Swanns and witness in the last few years the demolition of our Club. It now seems the Swanns are walking away but I will believe it when new owner/owners take over. SWANNS WORDS “THE CLUB WILL BE IN A BETTER POSITION WHEN I LEAVE THAN WHEN I TOOK OVER”. We shall see. How many of us supporters believe this?

Exactly this, my lad never got see the fantastic times we had, when he’s in the Iron Bar with me he stares at the pictures of a full GP and players celebrating and he can’t believe how good we were. And i’m not just talking about success and winning every week, when I was his age we were at OSG and crap BUT we felt we were part of something and as crap as the team was EVERY SINGLE ONE of them gave 100% for Scunthorpe United, week in , week out.

Andy Keogh was the player I loved watching.
That goal from the halfway line in the last minute at Carlisle was pure bliss!

I completely agree with that sentiment but I’m glad I didn’t start supporting the Iron when we were so good, just imagine how much harder the bad times would be if you had grown up seeing us beating all-comers? Sometimes I’m glad I’m a bit older and can remember less successful times! It helps you really appreciate the good times.

April 12, 2022 at 12:00 pm #235465Never get tired of videos like that.
Saw one recently of the Yeovil game in 2007. The terrace has never been more packed; certainly not enough room to throw a tennis ball.
Sharp/Keogh always get the plaudits but it’s Amazing how we got so much out of an average player like Morris, Goodwin, Baraclough and the legend himself cliffy

April 12, 2022 at 12:54 pm #235467I would drive to Peterborough and fetch cliffy myself if he agreed to come! He certainly would stand for any of these players antics and I’am sure a few arses would be well and truly kicked.

April 12, 2022 at 12:55 pm #235468Was that the game(Yeovil) when they moved the away supporters to let more home fans in because the terrace was full
April 12, 2022 at 1:42 pm #235469Icing on the cake for me was having Beckford in for a while too. An amazing curler at home to (?) followed by a near identical goal at Gresty Road in mid-week. Really spoilt. As if we didn’t have enough gems.

Rotherham. We played terribly and then Beckford did that. Later in the game, their German midfielder Bopp missed a penalty. A German missing a penalty? It really was our year!

Byrne.Completely agree, the spine of that team was outstanding – Murphy, Crosby, Barraclough, Sharp then add in the attacking quality surrounding them, we certainly were spoilt.
April 12, 2022 at 4:01 pm #235481I remember when Crosby and Barra first arrived I heard a few fans opinions before they’d even kicked a ball saying they were past it!!! What did they know eh 😂

Think you’re right. Crewe away was a week or two after this ridiculous bit of skill below. Can’t upload the Crewe goal as I can only see it on Facebook. Same position and angle but just outside the box and only one helpless defender 🤣
April 12, 2022 at 4:55 pm #235491League 1 goal of the season! Saw him (beckford) recently and he said it was the best goal he scored but the goal against Man Utd in the fa cup was the most important.

April 12, 2022 at 5:46 pm #235493Thanks for this, Pat. Watching it the thought occurred to me …’How can you feel so much pride and joy AND terrible pain all at the same time?’ Seeing those clips of players over three or four years I was struck, setting aside the truly gifted players, by the sheer number of men of character and leadership in those squads. Oh for a Richard Hinds or Butler or Mirf over the last few years … let alone a Steve Foster or Crozzer. Oh for a Barraclough or Cleveland or Sharp or Cliffie… or Murphy. True professionals who drove themselves and those around them to go where they really should have had no expectation to be. And the thing is … I am now recalling other names who should have been on that list … Hooper, Williams, McCann etc etc etc

April 12, 2022 at 8:30 pm #235501Great video & great times.
However, whilst Swann has been a total disaster, let’s not forget that we had 30 years of pretty shit football under Wharton.
Now, I’m not suggesting that we give Swann any longet, but we would have been glad to see the back of Wharton long before we had our success in the noughties.
April 12, 2022 at 8:57 pm #235503What 30 years?
1 user thanked author for this post.
April 12, 2022 at 9:42 pm #235504I can only remember the one season we nearly got relegated from the football league under Laws. Towards the end Wharton returned as chairman, reappointed laws and we stayed up. in the summer we signed Mussy, Crosby and Baraclough and that launched the march up the leagues.
Compare that with the professional running the club, nearly get relegated, lets get rid of our best players, sign rubbish players not wanted by any other EFL club within a transfer embargo.
Oh for the club to be ran as a hobby again.2 users thanked author for this post.
April 13, 2022 at 9:16 am #235516Here you go Deerey – I’d forgotten that both keepers got bad injuries in that match. The collision between Byrne & Murphy was horrible.

I have to disagree with that, firstly Pearson was the Chairman from the 80’s until we moved to GP, and although we weren’t massively successful on the pitch during the 90’s we were always competitive in the league and for the most part I left GP feeling that I had been entertained win, lose or draw, we generally went into every game trying to win it even if more often than not we didn’t.
April 13, 2022 at 11:34 am #235525I agree with Pat O’Cake, though I think I might be a little bit younger than him, I started going in the 90s; we weren’t great but we generally finished top half and were at least competitive. That 1999 promotion came after 16 years without one. We’re currently at 8 years since our last promotion (one which apparently wasn’t good enough for most of our fans), anyone want to guess when our next promotion will come?
