I’ve listed some of the gems that came out of Butlers mouth.
“never got the luck of the bounce”
“It’s about using him “beck” in the right way, doesn’t mean we’re going to go long”
“we’ve got loads to work on”
“We’re fully focused on the league now. The forms not been great as such, but we’re still in a position where we can effect it”

Convert him to a Centre Back Stan!

The ball spent nearly whole of the 2nd half hoofed up to beck which worked, strange thing was there were no runners to pick up the balls he constantly won.
Does that mean we should have gone short today and not long, or was the plan to go long, but the players just forgot to run forward and collect the balls beck won ?
I’m genuinely confused.
November 17, 2024 at 10:23 am #294084They are not playing for him (Stan)
We’re better than this.
November 17, 2024 at 10:34 am #294088Didn’t mention the MOM! Brogan was given a chance and took it, if he doesn’t start the next game then it’s clearly jobs for the boys. Could be why one or two have a “can’t be arsed today I’ll be in next week anyway and I might feel more like it then” attitude.
How come “the fittest team in the NLN” couldn’t steamroller a team of part-timers in the last half hour?
Why are we still making the same mistakes week after week when “we know where we have to be better”?2 users thanked author for this post.
November 17, 2024 at 10:40 am #294090We must remember that most of the players in this squad are plying their trade at the NLN level for a reason (and it isn’t cash). They are decent players for this level but are probably struggling with the formation and tactics. They raise their game to meet Butler’s expectations, and it all works for a while, then as is the way for anyone who is under pressure, they resort to type when the pressure mounts and start making mistakes.
It is clear to all that the current formation has not been working consistently for a couple of months. Sure, we’ve had the odd success, Farsley Celtic for example, but for the most part, this has been hugely unsuccessful. A good manager would look at the players within his squad and build a formation around their strengths, and not keep trying to make the squad play in a formation that they are clearly struggling with.
I feel that the squad have lost faith in the formation, and when the slightest thing goes wrong, they fall into a state of frustration, poor decision making, and increasing desperation. Butler needs to do some self-reflection. Ultimately, he cannot keep hiding behind the ‘individual player errors’, and ‘we could have scored a couple more’ statements. He and his team are the ones who are coaching them all week, and we’re seeing no indication that things are improving.
I like Butler and really want him to succeed. However, whilst I do not want Butler to go today, it is abundantly clear that unless something changes for the better within the next 4 matches, I and just about the whole fanbase, will be calling for his head before we hit Christmas.

November 17, 2024 at 11:19 am #294105I go along with a lot of those thoughts SOD. We will have to see how the new signing effect the team, I thought Williams looked a class above the rest of our midfield. Where as Evans is a liability in my opinion and must not be near the starting eleven. I also want Butler to succeed because if he does the once mighty Iron are being successful too.

November 17, 2024 at 11:46 am #294113If he wants to get the best out of Beck then play him up top with Whitehall when fit and a couple of wingers, how about say Roberts and Carlton ( their most effective positions). You never know Andy it might work, what’s the old saying ” a change is as good as a rest ” and bloody hell do we all need a rest from this current drivel.

Don’t practice until you get it right. Practice until you can’t get it wrong!

November 17, 2024 at 12:37 pm #294132Maybe they should arrange a game against a pub team every week to get their shooting boots in good shape, forget that we already do that every week.
Brazil used to do that before every world cup and weren’t embarrassed to win 20+ -0
England did it once and only drew being the nice people we are not wanting to embarrass the other team says it all really, how many cups we won.November 17, 2024 at 1:56 pm #294149Lol, Mike Bassett speaks

Going by what Butler said pre and post match, it will be Whitehall and Beck up front in the same formation. If Butler was going to change it and go with Roberts and Carlton out wide, he would have done it Yesterday.
Yesterday was the perfect time to try something new, but seems he has no intention of changing it up. Only way he’ll change it up is if pressure is put on him to change formation from higher up, but apart from that scenario coming about, I can’t see him deviating from this formation.

I think he’s more Bertie Basset than Mike DM but a good analogy anyway.
November 18, 2024 at 2:10 am #294203I’m not sure if any other defenders besides Kouogun and Barrow can play full-back.
Because if not, we might not be able to play with four defenders.
But in fact we can change to 3-4-3.
Because now we have enough forwards.
It is true that 5-3-2 is not always viable because our wing-backs are not good enough in attack.
We need more options up front.
I don’t agree with 4-4-2 because we have too few options on the flanks.November 18, 2024 at 3:32 am #294204If he wants to get the best out of Beck then play him up top with Whitehall when fit and a couple of wingers

Sadly i think you are right WGs ..AB showing zero inclination to even try a new formation. Schoff as his experienced right hand man surely should be advising to change as its so obviously not working, maybe even a player should have a word ? saying that too many out of contract this season and will be gone (im guessing at least 5 or 6 when promotion hasnt happened) way things are going end up nearer the relegation zone than play offs.
November 18, 2024 at 7:49 am #294219Just listened to the RH post match interview. Pleased to hear Ollie Turner ask a few more difficult questions than James Moody. The big finish was “we are not too far from where we want to be”, if AB thinks that then we’re in real trouble. In terms of performance we’re miles away from where we need to be to win this league.
November 18, 2024 at 9:05 am #294223Ollie was good on the commentary too. A good foil to Torps’s general charitable analysis. Think he expresses supporters concerns well
November 18, 2024 at 10:47 am #294237Agree.
Last few games though, Torps has allowed himself a few negative remarks. For anyone familiar with his typical contribution – this has significance.November 18, 2024 at 8:06 pm #294264I heard Michelle’s interview pre match and sounds like she’s sticking by Butler. I hope it works it. Turns out Butler was on any type of written contract when he joined us, it was purely a verbal contract.
It’s the written contract he was offered 7 games later which is going to cost us “The club”.
What makes it all the more comical is the fact that if Michelle had held off a little longer to see the downturn in for it would have took one word and he would have been out the door and wouldn’t have cost us a penny.
I know Michelle has done wonders at this club and I’ll forever be thankful, but the way this club is run at times, it’s like a circus.
November 18, 2024 at 8:55 pm #294268Given the tawdry state of professional football I would applaud Michelle for being good to her word regarding the contract.
After Swann and Hilton a welcome return to a level of integrity that we have previously had as a football club.
I think it fair that Butler gets us promoted or falls on his sword. Michelle hinted that the contract has provisions in place should he need a little push.
I was on here pre season suggesting we don’t have the players for 5-3-2 and have seen nothing to change my mind. The recruitment either recent or pre season has not changed our ability to play the system.
I’m still hoping Butler will change rather than the club having to change him but I have cancelled my planned Leamington and Darlo trips. Not doing any more away games until I can expect 5 or so hours of travel might be rewarding by seeing more tha 5 minutes of half decent football.

November 18, 2024 at 10:20 pm #294272I’ve booked train tickets for Leamington, Marine and Chorley MK so I cant cancel, the warrington ones are out now but told the grandkids we’re not going unless things change.
Sad state of affairs but we are where we are.1 user thanked author for this post.
November 18, 2024 at 10:31 pm #294274Club support lasts a lifetime not just when it’s good times, you know that better than most Awaywego.
November 18, 2024 at 10:50 pm #294276Goes without saying ironawe, Doesn’t mean you’ve got to go watch them though, there’s got to be a modicum of enjoyment from the football your watching.
It’s definitely a chore at the moment going to glanny park at least the away games are more of a sociable occasion.November 21, 2024 at 6:40 pm #294369Post match was much of the same. Lots of old, worn out sound bites, working hard, get back to the training pitch, review, reflect etc etc etc. Most frustrating of all, the formation is still not to blame. Quite impressive the level of arrogance required to be unwilling to even consider that it would be a factor as to why so many individuals are making howlers so frequently.
