Two weeks into training and still only one signing. The 5 known trialists have been with us for 2 weeks, enough time for a decision to be made surely.
Are they all still here?
Are the players stalling hoping for a better offer?
Are we close to other signings?
Have we identified other trialists e.g. Peplow?
Come on Lee, throw us some crumbs, the silence is deafening.1 user thanked author for this post.

July 7, 2022 at 10:21 am #240103I have no problem giving it 2 or 3 weeks to decide on trialists. We can probably assume they train OK or they would be gone. We have one more closed doors friendly which is good because you can only assess capability in games.
If we are not sure after 3 games then it is only fair to the players to let them try elsewhere.
My worry is that we only have 5 trialists. Say we are lucky and 3 are considered good enough to sign. That still leaves us 4 or 5 first eleven players short in my opinion.
That 4 or 5 needs to include a keeper and 2 forwards with some decent experience of mens professional football. We won’t find them in a lucky bag.
July 7, 2022 at 12:08 pm #240111Writing is on the wall for relegation already.
We must have a set budget that still has room for signings. If we do, then why aren’t we doing business earlier ? Realistically we’ve been down since April so why wasn’t we getting a squad ready then.
Not buying Keith’s bullshit excuses on Humberside either, clubs paying less than us are getting signings through the door.

July 7, 2022 at 1:39 pm #240118Elliott Whitehouse the first trialist to make the cut.
Welcome Elliott. Has good experience at this level and could be a decent signing.
Let’s have a keeper and a couple of forwards next please Keith/Lee.
Some won’t like the fact he had a spell with the Cods but I am encouraged Keith is prepared to back his judgement on a player he has not worked with previously.

July 7, 2022 at 1:45 pm #240119I’m more impressed he had spells with Lincoln and Forest Green which implies he has a bit of something about him. Why so many clubs and still only 28 may reveal itself during next season but I hope he becomes an important player for us in midfield. Welcome young man and the very best of luck with the Iron.

Doesn’t bother me one bit that he has played for Grimsby, loads of players have played for both clubs in the past so don’t see why it should be a problem now?

July 7, 2022 at 2:37 pm #240121Always thought decent for us, better than NL but seems like he’s had a lot of injury problems so keeping him fit will be your main concern
July 7, 2022 at 2:43 pm #240122July 7, 2022 at 4:01 pm #240123He’s a shoo in!
July 7, 2022 at 4:17 pm #240124Really pleased with the whitehouse signing
Another 5/6 like that and we could be on for a decent season
July 7, 2022 at 4:38 pm #240125Pleased with both signings but we’re still a good half dozen short.
The worry, of course, is that we’ll be forced to settle for half a dozen fill-ins.3 users thanked author for this post.
July 7, 2022 at 4:52 pm #240127Good to see another player finally through the doors. Looks the pick of the bunch out of the trialists so hopefully we can get a good run of games out him.
Desperately need to some more bodies in during the next week though. A goalkeeper especially.

He’s a National League North player.
Look at his stats!
Stats in football don’t lie.Website:
“The Worksop-born player started his career at Sheffield United, for whom he made five appearances and captained the youth team that reached the 2010-11 FA Youth Cup final. While with the Blades, he enjoyed loan spells at York City and Alfreton Town, before joining Notts County, making eight League One appearances while also going out on loan to Nuneaton Town.
After a brief spell at FC Halifax Town, it was Nuneaton where he scored 20 goals in 45 National League North appearances before Lincoln City swooped for his services in 2016.
While with the Imps, he made 77 appearances and scored ten goals during a two-year spell which included promotion to the EFL, an FA Cup run to the quarter finals and scoring the decisive goal in the EFL Trophy final.
Whitehouse moved on to Grimsby Town, where he made 38 appearances and scored three times before switching to Forest Green Rovers two years ago, for whom he played on 23 occasions and scored two goals.
——————————————-
That’s a 1 in 8 through to a 1 in 12 / 1 in 13 goal scoring rate in the National League.
Ok, he’s a midfielder – not a striker.
But, I like my midfielders to bag 10 goals a season … 1 goal every 5 games.
This guy scored ONE goal last year and one goal the year before!
Hardly inspirational!
July 7, 2022 at 8:16 pm #240136Totally disagree Renee
Why are you obsessing about how many he scores… he’s a CM who likes a battle and a tackle.
Good solid pro for the level we are at, would possibly have got a league 2 club had it not been for his injury.
Let’s hope he stays fit and shows you his quality

July 7, 2022 at 8:20 pm #240138He doesn’t find it hard to find a club. What does concern me is that after signing he is soon shipped out on loan. Hope its not an attitude problem.

At Liverpool:
Graeme Souness 1 goal in 6.5 games
Terry McDermott 1 in 4.3 games
Ray Kennedy 1 in 5.4 games
Jimmy Case 1 in 8 games
Ronnie Whelan 1 in 7.8 games
Jan Molby 1 goal in 4.9 gamesIf you want to win a league – any league – you need your midfielders to weigh in with their share of goals.

Quoting top class players in a top class league, what a ridiculous comparison.

What’s even more ridiculous is having a defender who scores 1 in 10.7 games for you and helps you win promotion to the EFL as Champions in the 2021-22 season.
Ashley Palmer – check his stats.
Where’d he start out?… good old Scunny Utd.If you’ve got midfielders who can get you 8 or ten goals a season plus defenders who can get you 4 or 5 goals a season… then you’ll win trophies.
Three of Stockport’s midfielders
Antoni Sarcevic (Stockport) 1:6 last season.
Will Collar (Stockport) 1:5 last season.
Oliver Crankshaw (Stockport) 1:3 last season.July 8, 2022 at 12:51 am #240151Pleased to finally get another player signed and IMO Whitehouse fits the requirements on experience and part of the spine the team needs .. not overly fussed re his goal scoring due to the position he plays BUT my only concern he has a bad injury record and no good being sidelined for weeks or months.
As previously commented ..desperately need a Keeper (Ohara still free ?? ) and strikers with a plural S .. oh and more additions to that spine and wingers and a right back and ……… yhe list can go on , i reckon we are minimum 5 signings more away from a team that could at least hold its own in the NL.
Many other lower league and non league clubs seem to be signing at will ..the Cods for one im sure the current long running toxicity at the club isnt helping entice players to comeHoping for more to come in ovEr the next few days ..PLEASE
July 8, 2022 at 1:42 pm #240183Not just signings. 5 men who can compete, it’s a battle every week I didn’t think league 2 was under physical when we went down, but the NL is a different level big mincers all over for most teams
July 8, 2022 at 7:41 pm #240221Mincers? Lol.

July 8, 2022 at 8:32 pm #240231The one good thing about trialists is that we’re not making signings for the sake of appeasing the fans only to discover half a dozen games into the season we’ve bought a pup.
Had Ntlhe signed many on here would have moaned because we didn’t need another LB.
If he’s left then that leaves another space hopefully to be filled by a striker.
The worry about rummaging through the bargain bucket still remains, but we don’t want any shirts that are going to remain hidden at the back of the wardrobe!
