Gonna lay down some snotty rules here
No Dylan and Byrds ,Nine Inch Nails and CashYou must like both
Keep comments short1st one for me .
St Emmylou nails this one for me , both amazing versions of what some call the greatest country song ever but the Emmylou Version is the one that caught the eye and helped start the Townes legend .Also she couldn’t fail to nail it with one of the best bands ever

Tough one this as I heard the Elvis one 1st but as good as it is it doesn’t catch the emotion like Georges voice so George

August 11, 2023 at 8:07 pm #269103Oh mate, good choice Etta voice nails it for me though just too good
August 11, 2023 at 11:50 pm #269112Cover for me. But yes, love both. Electing Wyatt for musical reasons and fond memories of Peel shows and festive 50 challenges with Anarchy in the UK and Atmosphere
August 11, 2023 at 11:59 pm #269113Original for me. But love Kirstys version.

August 12, 2023 at 12:15 am #269114Original. Though I like Bauhaus’s faster and raw cover. I’ve also been told they were good lads so I’ve got a soft spot for them. And probably got the single somewhere in the shed.

The Dinosaur Jr cover for me.

It has to be Beatles, in sincerity. However, Shatner’s has a so bad it’s good quality. It’s just absurd how he could do this and no-one told him it’s not a good idea or they did and he didn’t listen. I can see how Futurama based Zapp Brannigan off him. I would have done the more absurd cover of Mr Tambourine Man, but the rules stated no Dylan, so anyone curious do check that out.
August 12, 2023 at 9:11 am #269145Definitely the cover this time with the introduction of young Ernie on guitar.
August 12, 2023 at 11:25 am #269165Loved the cover first before hearing and loving the original more
August 12, 2023 at 5:42 pm #269176Original was of its time but Mark E Smith gives it a tongue in cheek quirkyness.

August 12, 2023 at 7:46 pm #269195Quite different but I do like The Doors
August 12, 2023 at 11:09 pm #269228Love both. Not electing one over the other. Depending what mood I’m in, either could win
August 12, 2023 at 11:20 pm #269230Always the original but always loved the Frente version. A beautiful take on a sublime track.
August 13, 2023 at 11:35 am #269276Where do we start? Some great stuff above.

August 13, 2023 at 12:13 pm #269283It’s a great thread that could run and run
Cover or original Gurney?
August 13, 2023 at 12:35 pm #269285Like someone said above, it depends on the moment/mood, no? The uke(?) version is great if you’re tired n hungover. Which one for you?
Here’s another rip-roaring cover….. no need for the version we all know..
August 14, 2023 at 10:38 pm #269460Close call but I’m plumping for This Mortal Coils cover
August 14, 2023 at 10:54 pm #269462Another close call but I’m going Madness cover. Sorry Labi
August 15, 2023 at 7:12 am #269466Wouldn’t normally say this about the Beatles but the cover by a country mile.

I prefer the more manic sound of the original Pixies version, but Fontaines do a good job in covering it in their own way with a Joy Division-esque feel. A good cover should always be different. There is no point in the covers which just sound the same as the original in my opinion.

Liz wins it for meAugust 15, 2023 at 11:12 am #269478Cocker’s ‘Friends’? A great rendition with a sort of evangelical quality to it. An atheist hymn? The Woodstock version is good, too.
Two more: Hard to beat the original but Tena’s Molotov make it their own …..
August 15, 2023 at 11:34 am #269480Good
Also very good, maybe better.
August 18, 2023 at 10:45 am #269758Cramps for me but I’ll gladly tap my feet to either
