September 5, 2023 at 3:24 pm #271101September 5, 2023 at 5:07 pm #271103Some people have been criticised for saying “Pride is not a virtue it is a sin”.
I’m pleased we have freedom of speech in this country, compared to some countries around the world.1 user thanked author for this post.

September 8, 2023 at 12:06 pm #271266In my view this guy is just like many …probably most folks. He is in the public view because he could play footie … not because he is a great intellectual or a deeply principled paragon of virtue. Like most folks in the present climate .. he knows what he is supposed to think, say and support and why wouldn’t you if it keeps you onside with public, press and sponsors. It doesn’t necessarily mean he has deep convictions. As the end of his career looms he has taken a huge financial lure without even considering that there would be dots to be joined up and plenty of ‘scrutinisers’ happy to join them up and find him wanting. I would have applauded him for refusing to go to a place like Saudi for principled reasons … but would also have found it pretty remarkable. If you want to do some puritanical vilification then at least spread the load to Mahrez, Gerrard, Kante, Jota, Neves etc etc and anyone who wore the rainbow laces.
September 8, 2023 at 12:21 pm #271267I agree that others don’t come out well, it’s not just Henderson, but he has previously sounded off about his ‘valued’ principles. He has previously claimed to have these deep values. Evidently, money talks and I don’t think it’s ‘puritanical’ to criticise someone for not giving a fig about principles for money. Were those who opposed sporting events in apartheid South Africa puritans? When nations have abhorrent regimes or principles, those who have professed a supposed care for values antithetical come across as hypocritical when they go against them. It’s so easy to wear rainbow laces in the UK, but going against a country which criminalises people for who they are when they offer loads of money, is too hard for Henderson.
The issue is complex, and I am not writing him off as a person, but his decision leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion. As it does with the others.

September 8, 2023 at 1:17 pm #271273Agreed. Just wanted to sound that warning note .. especially as I’ve never seen Henderson as the brightest star in the firmament.

September 8, 2023 at 1:48 pm #271276I dont care about Hendo
Hendo dont care about me
All i care about is ,,,,,,, SUFCSeptember 8, 2023 at 5:00 pm #271295Not just the players either many on here have supported the knee, rainbow laces and black lives matter so easy to do but means sod all at the end of it, look at today the police looking for fans who sang ” Lucy Letby she’s one of your own” at the Chester v Hereford game. really? And everyone being indignant about it,people really need to stop being so righteous unless they are prepared to something more than making meaningless gestures.

What more specifically do you expect people to do awaywego? Violent action? There’s a history of these sorts of peaceful campaigns helping to bring about change (not on their own so much), quite a number linked to the Trade Union movement, which I assume, as a former shop steward, you saw the merit of? What do you propose people do for it all to be worthwhile in your eyes, Alf?
September 8, 2023 at 5:53 pm #271299Made it quite clear before, I’d like to not see these things at football or any sports for that matter, The Trade union movement sees the merits in voting labour doesn’t mean being a shop steward you have to agree with them. I would have backed England walking off at half time against Hungary when 3-0 up when our players received all the racial abuse. Would have backed England refusing to go to Qatar for the world cup on the rainbow issue if it meant that much to them. But Kane wouldn’t even wear the armband he said they would, waste of space and time comes to mind. Same with the covid football shouldn’t have carried on and was me who suggested on here that Swann should have said we wouldn’t be carrying on with the season with all the consequences that would have come with it.
September 8, 2023 at 5:59 pm #271302Some fair points regarding worthwhile action I reckon. Don’t agree those campaigns shouldn’t happen mind, though actions like Henderson has taken, make a bit of a mockery of it.

September 8, 2023 at 6:24 pm #271307Come on its only about money what would you all do in this situation expexts
abuseSeptember 8, 2023 at 6:55 pm #271310Our government on our behalf sells billions of pounds of arms every year to the Saudis and many other middle east regimes.
We let them buy our football clubs without much of a question from the fans of those clubs.
Then we get self righteous about a footballer topping up his pension. Who is the biggest offender here?
September 8, 2023 at 6:58 pm #271311Is it going to change full stop of course not

September 8, 2023 at 7:26 pm #271317With Henderson it’s just about his personal morality, hundreds of other players just kept their gobs shut about the issue so have nothing to answer for if taking the big wonga.
September 8, 2023 at 7:38 pm #271318Anyone have any thoughts on the misogynistic song from the Donny road end about Regan Ogle, to me it’s just a song but of course that’s just me.
