Firstly, it sounds like we have a good selection of players available for the game, with the 2 new lads available and Perry & Scrimshaw returning.

The big question for Cox is, does he stick with a winning team?

Without wanting to jinx anything, I’ve been very impressed with how solid we look so far. At this point last season we were conceding goals left, right and centre. If the GK and 3 CB’s can continue this form, it gives more confidence for the midfielders & wing backs to join the attack and who knows, we may even end up scoring 2 or more goals in a game!

For the first time in a long while, I am actually seeing a Scunthorpe team have an identity and method to their play.

A draw would be a good result and a win would be a great result.

    Up the Iron.

It looks like the players are getting used to the system, and their roles in it. 4-4-2 on Saturday then I expect.

Samways—Do you not think that you are using the word “winning team” a bit loosly pal, one win in 16 matches is surely not a winning team!!!, if you had said a team that has just won a match for the first time in months, that would be possibly a better description of the situation.

When you say that the defence looks solid, that is because there are usually 10 of them, I would think that many more fans would like to see a bit of attacking play, it might just tempt us to return to see what is going on!!!, 2,500 gates are not the signs of happy Scunthorpe supporters.

Scrimshaw could make a big difference because without him I’m not sure where the goals are coming from in this side.

I know we created plenty of chances against Tranmere but we didn’t take them – through a combination of good goalkeeping and poor finishing. If Scrimshaw can take the odd chance, we have a genuine chance this season because it appears that the defence is much more robust than the last couple of seasons.

Big test for Cox this Saturday because, unlike in recent weeks, he has options and we won the last match. Who gets in out of Scrimshaw, Wood, Perry & Hackney and who misses out? Good luck Neil, if we lose then, as far as some Bruers are concerned, you’ll have picked the wrong team for sure!

I doubt Northampton will be as bad as Tranmere were. I don’t expect massive changes but I think Scrimshaw and one of the new midfield loanee’s will start.

Had a good draw away at Forest Green, but like us have been finding goals hard to come by.

Could be an attritional game decided by the odd goal.

    Team selection will be interesting.

I thought Rowe was excellent at Right Back so I fully expect Pugh to start there on Saturday

I thought Green was his usual ineffective self so I expect him to keep his place.

One new lad in centre mid to replace Pugh and that’s yer lot

Momentum behind us with the win last week. 2-0 away win tomorrow. Would like to see Scrimshaw partner Jarvis and give Green a rest.

Nice to read some positive posts based mainly on Saturdays result against Tranmere and to those posting who did not attend that game I would point out that despite the possession stats which hugely favoured Tranmere, it was the Iron creating chances whereas Tranmere didnt. We just need to finish these moves off but the team looked a lot more fluid going forward last week and the win was thoroughly deserved, the optimism from those who attended is justified IMO.

We could and should have won at least 4-0 vs Tranmere!

How long is Loft out for? Would like to see him and Scrimshaw up top, can see it working well.

Surprised Green gets the nod with Scrimshaw and Bunn on the bench.

Manni sent off for professional foul. We are down to 10 men, but had he not made the foul we could be 1 – 0 down. Thoughts?

Shocking defending from Manny and Davis to cause the problem in the first place. Aimless ball forward gets us into trouble with 3 centre backs.

Devarn didnt prove me wrong today. Ended up playing up front, in midfield and then at right back. Shite in all 3 positions. Yet he finished the game. What’s that about Neil?

Wood could be a Yates. The other loanee in midfield looks more of a Regan Slater. Early days though. Again Neil thought you should have brought him off earlier.

Damned if he does damned if he doesn’t, would probably be hoping for a yellow but final thoughts, tough call seeing out a game for 70+ minutes with just ten men. Take this result on the chin and move on, no need for despondency.

It is difficult with ten men but that was shocking.
Tactically inept and unable to adapt, zero shots on target.
It’s going to be a very long season.

Cox is and always will be quite limited in his intelligence and will struggle to change games or out-think opposition managers so when down to ten men he will get worse. But he is a ‘yes’ man so Swann will love it.

Green has been diabolical for many matches now but still gets picked – and played the full game! Scrimshaw on and balls pumped up to him. Davis had a nightmare – first goal just stopped running with his man. The second goal – pure keystone cops stuff (shades of the nightmares of last year)

All in all a bad day at the office. 1 goal from open play in 19 games. No shots on target (partly understandable given the manager’s limitations and the match situation)

Watson played OK and made some good saves so wasn’t at fault.

Where is Mason O’Malley these days ??

Tom Pugh – what has he done to get dropped ? But it was what I expected Mr Cox to do.

I understand your frustration Sanfran but Cox’s reputation (such that it is) is at stake here. If Thompson is better than O’Malley then he must play, if he isn’t then why is he here. Similarly if Wood and Hackney are better than Pugh then they have to play or their signings are a massive mistake. Clearly Cox believes he needed better than he had, time will tell if he was right.

So we drop our own young players to play a couple of loanee players for bigger clubs, where’s the sense in that? As SanFran says, what has Pugh done to deserve being dropped? What’s the point in signing Perry & Bunn if you’re going to play loanees in front of them?

Onarise’s red card doesn’t surprise me, I’ve never seen a slower defender on the turn. He has his good qualities but I reckon Cliff Byrne would beat him in a 50-metre dash.

    Very disappointing all round.

Perry, Bunn and Scrimshaw were only training for one day said Cox, not sure why Pugh and O’Malley not playing

Another shambles, 95 mins without a shot on target, what is matter with this manager, he plays this 4-4-1-1, and after losing Onarise 4-4-1, resulting in the bloody ball coming back into our half every time anyone tried to move forward, this management are taking up out of the football league without any doubt, they are clueless. Young Pugh should not only have been brought on, he should have been selected from the off, how the hell Green ever get selected is beyond me, he is not even National League standard, he cannot control a ball, he cannot pass a ball, and if pathetic at shooting, and wastes the ball all the time, that does not leave much else does it.

My Rating marks for today as could be seen on the I-Follower showing of the match:-

WATSON—7—Did ok and no fault with the goals, made a few good stops.
DAVIS—6—Not too safe in defending and had his part in both goals.
WOOD—7—Played well first half and had him down for an 8, dropped off a bit 2nd half.
TAFT—7—OK, without being outstanding, did not last the game out.
BEESTIN—8—About our best player in a very moderate team.
THOMPSON—6—Plodded away and got in a few saving tackles.
ONARASIE—4—Red carded early which made things difficult for our poor team.
ROWE—6—Did not stand out for his effort, bit of a fringe player at best.
HACKNEY—5—Not the best of cebut games, nothing stood out for me.
JARVIS–5—Trotted about a lot, but this 4-4-1-1 is not a winning system.
GREEN—4—Fast, but has no football skills what so ever, should never start a game.

SUBS Did not make things a lot better, and once again never had a shot on target.

COX—4—Clueless as usual, subs were one for one with the team never threatening, Pugh should have started, and one of the centre forwards that sat on the bench, Green should never be considered for starting any match, but Cox sees things differently.

Now gone 17 matches with just the one win, that being the Tranmere game when we were awarded a penalty which wasn’t ever one. But Mr Cox is still the manager, and it appears that he still gets the backing of some long term forum fans, I wonder if they will still be giving it the old Neil this and Neil that when we go into the National League, it will be interesting.

REF—7—Average ref, but even the Italian International Ref Golena could not polish a turd like this match. I wonder if we will be getting a club message from Mr Swann regarding the club, surely it was not Covid or the 331 die hards fault for another inept defeat, surely at some point it must point to club management!!!

Cox got that wrong tactically in my opinion. Goal was clearly coming and finally brought people on but only changed like for like and never really adapted tactically, no tactical nous whatsoever which most expect from Cox.

I don’t get Green starting ahead of Scrimshaw as he’s been absolutely awful. Thompson had a bit of a shocker. Hackney is supposed to have a hell of lot of talent but if that’s anything to go by his game may not adapt to this level of football.

Granted he’s only played in 1 game but he’s appears to want far too much time on ball and isn’t the biggest physically. Hackney should have come off at half time in all honesty, it was like playing with 9 men at times, never got into the game and didn’t offer much at all.

I suspect he’ll be a luxury player at this level. Hackney will probably end up being one of those types who would do well in top end league 1 and championship but seriously struggle at this kind of level.

Wood on the other hand looks a proper player who’s game will lend it’s self to most levels of football. One poster mentioned Ryan Yates as a comparison and to be fair he does match up well to him, he appears to be a really good all round player.

Wood looks to have a bit of bite about him and puts himself about where as Hackney will probably be one of those “pretty” players who struggle with the physicality.

Defence looked shaky as hell again. Manny was all over the place and Davis looked dodgy as well. Next match it will be Rowe in there with Millen at RB.

CM midfield I’d go Wood, Perry and Beestin. Jarvis and Scrimshaw upfront. Green needs time on the bench. I understand he’s quick but he doesn’t really offer anything else and besides being quick, he never uses his pace effectively anyway.

We need Loft back, sooner the better. Perry back in CM for his passing. Thompson keeps that shite up he offered up today then O’Malley needs to come back in. I know he’s not made the best start himself but he looks out of favour now.

How many times did Devarn fail to take on a man to get in a cross or a run at goal?
Times-a-many, he would face a single defender. If he is as fast as we think – why not just push the ball past the man and take him on using his speed. If he were able to have outpaced the marker, we might have had a great many more scoring opportunities.
Recycling the ball when you can skin the defender does seem rather odd.

Question – is he really that pacey?

If he’s scared to make a mistake – then he must not be in the side. Forwards have to play the percentages if chances are to be made. Losing the ball up front occasionally whilst trying to mount an attack is just an occupational hazard.

Must now revert to the bench and learn that if he comes on as a sub, he will be required to make a difference. Continuity play is little use to a side not creating chances.

Agree with Les regarding Green. He’s either carrying a knock which effects his speed – in which case his only asset has gone – or he really isn’t that fast – in which case his only asset has gone. I watched him closely last two matches and he struggled to beat what I would class a medium pacer.

Almost never beat his man yesterday, one time got to the bye line really poor delivery (straight out). Played in 3 positions yesterday and would poor in all 3.

Needs a stretch on the bench. Cox said he now has a really strong bench so he needs to mix it up next game
