Non Football

Good evening

It is fair to say the entire forum has been neglected in terms of moderation of late, but I was really disappointed to discover that the Non Football forum has spiralled out of control in recent weeks.

Due to other commitments, I am not in a position to be able to monitor the Non Football side of things as closely as is clearly necessary. With that in mind I have reluctantly taken the difficult decision to close that part of the forum.

Be advised that if it once again spirals into look-at-me leftyism, with no balance, it will be of little use to the average user.

Two things to note, then, please.

It must be even handed. The average reader/user does NOT want to read thread after thread slagging off the right and defending, or extolling the virtues of the left. No matter your political leanings.

Adding balance does NOT mean that, if there are already six left-leaning threads in existence, a user must also add a left-leaning thread for every right-leaning thread/post. He will need to add SIX right leaning threads/posts.
And is ready and willing to do so.

I trust this meets with your approval, Matt, and that ANY moderators will uphold the rights of both left AND right to post whatever, and whenever, they like, so long as legal?

This will lead to many others being willing to use the forum, and less of the cancel culture.

I have no problem with threads discussing right wing topics, that’s not the issue. I do with spam, and despite alcy’s protestations about left wing stuff being ever present, we never had umpteen posts made on the same day for weeks on end. :-)

Maybe if everyone committed to less politicaly based posts and to starting threads on different topics, that might help? There was a time this used to happen.

Hopefully, if alcy actually wants to put forward his views he can do so in a more sensible manner. Have specific threads where each corresponding video goes in, instead of endless spam of separate threads. :-) There would be no issue there for me.

There will always be nitpicking, it happens on this footy side so it’s bound to happen on non football where there are more varied topics. However if forum rules are consistently broken then I expect the new mods to come down on the perpetrators and let them know in no uncertain terms exactly where they stand. Despite what has been written about the old non football forum it has to be stated that after certain rules were reinforced by SST a couple of years back, these were not followed up on by the mods of the time. Whether it was a time reason or not is not an issue anymore because what is gone is gone but I just hope the new non football forum is policed better but it’s up to everyone using it to help the new mods out by being more considerate and reasoned in what they post.

Very good point Awaywego maybe the rules will be made available to view when the non football side is relaunched. Matt it’s a good idea and would concentrate minds.

I think there needs be an understanding that whilst you’re free to hold whatever views you like, some may well be unacceptable to publish on a forum and those posts that risk the site, the site owners reputation and the good name of Scunthorpe United should be immediately removed and the perpetrators issued a warning. If this happens, it would be helpful if everyone accepted that without claims of ‘censorship’ and being ‘cancelled’. Just my opinion.

It’s a frigging forum. People have different opinions. There is no such thing as an “average user”!

Posting multiple repetitive videos with no discussion adds zero balance. It’s spam.

When will Alcy realise that it’s not unusual to find that at least 6 football supporters who grew up in the steel town of Scunthorpe in the 60s, 70s and 80s are also supporters of the Labour party.

Neither is it unusual to find more than 6 Iron supporters and forum members from the same background who don’t support the Labour party.

The forum is free for all to comment. Just because you don’t agree with some of the posts, is not a reason to spam with the purpose of closing it down.

Hopefully the mods will deal with you if you do it again and quickly boot you off!

It depends on what you consider “leftyism”.

If you think a post in support of players taking the knee is leftyism (some consider it Marxism). Or a post criticising our Tory Government is a political broadcast on behalf of the Labour Party. Then you are going to have problems.

And if you’re on about balance, then how many posts will Bobby GMeister have to submit?

Anyway, Blast Furnace isn’t the right board to discuss this on. Let’s wait until the week after next.
