Half full glass type of fan and looking forward to the forthcoming season – what else can you do? :)
Being realistic (with the limited knowledge I have of NLN! ) I can’t see past last seasons top finishers being there or there-abouts again.
Key signings seem to be:
Chester – Obviously Elliot Whitehouse, Kings Lynn – Jack Smith from Stevenage (replacing Clunan?), Brackley – Crawford and Cross, and the experienced and much travelled Ryan Taylor is now at Alfreton.
Who do you think will be challenging for top spot?

July 1, 2023 at 2:34 pm #265196We got 11 new players and hanged on to some of the decent performers from last season. Most of our players for next season were signed before pre season, it’s been a long time since we could say that!
So come on, UP THE IRON!
July 1, 2023 at 3:30 pm #265198Been keeping an eye out and nothing has stood out, although that may be due to a lack of knowledge on the player pool.
Kings Lynn have had their side decimated which finished 2nd last year. Additionally, Chester/darlo fans have both raised 100k separately for transfer budgets so expect them to bring in some quality.
I did read somewhere that the part time nature of this league means it’s hard to entice good players away from their local area. Perhaps explains why Glen Taylor has stayed with Spennymoor despite scoring a shed load of goals for them in recent years
July 1, 2023 at 9:34 pm #265203Fans of league clubs from all over the country have been surprised and at times in sheer disbelief at the squad we’ve managed to put together, for the level of football we’re at.
I know football has never been won on paper but really by rights this squad we’ve got is so far ahead than the rest in this league that if we don’t win it, it will be one of the biggest balls up’s of all time.
I always thought Wilcox did the unthinkable when he had us limping over the line with the squad that we had at the time but if Dean can’t manage it with this squad, it will be on a whole new level of incompetency.
Let’s be honest here. The squad we’ve assembled now would more than likely finish top half at the league above and would compete well so there’s no excuses to be had now.
This squad is a million miles away from last season and is probably the strongest it’s been for quite a while.
July 1, 2023 at 10:29 pm #265212WG, I must agree with you , I’ve been surprised by the quality of your signings and you should have a good chance of bouncing straight back. Also if you do you would have a good chance in the NL the season after, especially if chesterfield get promoted this season.
However there are several caveats. As you said football isn’t played on paper. As an outsider with a little more objective observation I have several concerns.
Firstly, Jimmy Dean seems like a cross between Fred Bassett and Ted Lasso in his interviews. I was very surprised Nelson wasn’t given a chance after polishing a massive turd.
Secondly , these signings can’t come cheap, especially for a part time league. Where is Dodgy Dave, Trevor, Simon, Pete or what ever he’s calling himself this week getting the money from and is it sustainable?
Thirdly where will you play long term ? The ground situation is a complete joke and you’re certainly being lied to. We have more experience in this than most. There’s absolutely no way you’ll have a new ground in 2 years , you’ll be lucky if you even have planning permission by then! It just seems like a game of brinkmanship between White and Swann.
I do however admire your optimism but don’t let it blind you.
Good luck for this season.1 user thanked author for this post.

Lol, very true. Watch out Jerry and Kitchener will be after you: ‘my god, they even engage with Cods on Bru!!’
Blind optimism rules for many Iron fans these days Captain.
July 2, 2023 at 3:31 pm #265284Apologies , I meant Mike Bassett , I’d had a few beers last night !
July 2, 2023 at 3:43 pm #265285Fred Bassett still works
July 2, 2023 at 4:24 pm #265288Fred Bassett still works
Fred Basset was lead cartoon on a right wing rag, hope he’s nothing like him.
July 2, 2023 at 5:13 pm #265291No comment
July 2, 2023 at 6:07 pm #265295Well Fred Basset only communicated in thought bubbles so fair play for that last no comment.
July 2, 2023 at 7:03 pm #265299What about Bertie? Into allsorts…
July 2, 2023 at 8:57 pm #265301Mike Bassett or even Dave Bassett would get us back into the football league 👍
July 3, 2023 at 6:32 am #265302There is doubt about the quality of the players brought in, the question is can Jimmy get them playing as a team?
As stated before I believe Nelson did enough with a very poor team to deserve a chance to see what he could do with some backing from upstairs, he didn’t however and that’s that, I’m willing to give Jimmy the chance to see what he can do with this squad and not judge him on last season, if he doesn’t hit the ground running though I expect the knives to be out very quickly.
July 3, 2023 at 9:45 am #265314Assuming you meant NO doubt I agree entirely. The problem then is, without success and as many times recently, we will end up with a new manager without “his” players which will be the excuse for potentially another dismal season. Jimmy has to make it work.

July 3, 2023 at 10:40 am #265322With the talents at his disposal, it seems impossible to not make it work.

Apologies, I did mean NO doubt, there used to be an option to edit but seems to not be there now?
July 3, 2023 at 11:09 am #265324The edit option disappears ~5 minutes after posting.
July 3, 2023 at 11:25 am #265327That’s right. It should be left a bit longer so typos etc can be amended or omissions added as an afterthought. Say ten minutes? I do think the option to edit should disappear once debate progresses .. the temptation to amend posts to ‘win the argument’ would be too strong for some posters.

Email matt@iron-bru.co.uk and ask him to extend it so you can win more arguments JI!
