Plus I make that 5 points dropped largely caused by Fitz trying to be clever and play it out from the back (vs Chorley and last night).

November 15, 2023 at 1:56 pm #276859Didn’t go last night didn’t listen or watch either but it would seem like a same old same old performance, why can’t we get up for games away it really isn’t good enough.
November 15, 2023 at 2:45 pm #276867Noticed Dean was getting a bit of stick on social media last night, and the club in one post, though I think ‘SUFC, you’ve ruined my f***ing life’ is a bit dramatic. Even I don’t think that and I’m a right misery.

November 15, 2023 at 2:54 pm #276868What has happened to young Wilson, I haven’t seen where he is injured, if he is fit, why was he not even included on the bench ?????
November 15, 2023 at 3:18 pm #276873We can only have 5, He came off the bench in the previous match and did nothing to suggest he should be picked in front of a fully fit Elliott.
(Mind you, he might have scored one or both of the Elliott chances last night had he been in the right place.)November 15, 2023 at 3:36 pm #276881Defence is the issue. We look likely to concede every time the opposition has a corner or are in our penalty area. Should have beaten them 1-0 last night.

The club being run into the ground by a conman could be considered something that might ruin your life. Losing a Tuesday night match away in November could not.

We definitely don’t need to import that sort of entitled Premier League mentality to our level.

November 15, 2023 at 4:22 pm #276884The reaction has been abit extreme from a few despite the disappointing performance- that’s not a problem exclusive to Scunthorpe fans though.
I remember after the P’boro sports game stating that the sense of expectation in the ground was palpable, never really experienced that as a Scunny fan. Unfortunately for Dean, we are expected to win every game with the players he has at his disposal.
I wouldn’t want to see him cave in and try anything drastic as overall the football has been entertaining; it’s just a case of showing some flexibility in tactics and responding quicker in games. Clearly we have to set up slightly different away from home as evidenced by results.
However, I enjoy listening to his analysis after games and it’s encouraging he seems to have watched the same game as us, under Cox/Hill and co they seemed oblivious to what had unfolded in front of them.

November 15, 2023 at 4:55 pm #276885The team assembled is certainly good enough for promotion

I know what you mean but I think we had a significant number of fans with very high expectations in the first half of the Swann era – demanding constant signings, wanting managers sacked when 5th in League 1…
November 15, 2023 at 5:09 pm #276887We play the nice football we have been doing at home but we need a more direct and solid approach away from home. Jimmy needs to quickly realise that we can’t keep playing this “Jimmy Ball” style home and away because it clearly hasn’t been working.
I still think we’re lacking a true target man to play away from home, a good mobile one who actually holds the ball up and we need to play more direct. Smith and Law cut inside and play almost like no 10’s away from home but they really need to keep their width and whip balls in for a proper targetman.
You can say Bennett was a targetman but he was shite. I know the money isn’t there but we definitely need a genuine good targetman and a finisher.
Those chances missed last night by Elliot were a piss take.

November 15, 2023 at 6:35 pm #276888In our remaining away games apart from Spennymoor and South Sheilds there is a fair chance that all the other teams will have seen Curzon, Buxton and Kings Lynn demonstrate the way to beat us and set up accordingly.
Even Spennymoor and South Shields might do the same given the spanking they both received when setting up to take us on at GP.
Our midfield 3 are all very good footballers in their very different ways but none are “scrappers”. Scales has a bit of an edge but is more likely to win a card than a tackle.
In the away games we have lost and drawn they have been against (at least) a midfield 4 that have tackled and harried and generally stopped our 3 from playing. This stops the quality service the 2 wide forwards rely on to create openings. They become ineffective because neither Law or Smith are guys that fight for and win possession from poor quality passes or long ball clearances.
This in turn leaves the central striker fighting a loan battle which is not Whitehall or Elliott’s forte.
For me we need to add a defensive sitter in midfield to even up the numbers. Shrimpton likes a tackle and a scrap so would be my choice. Sacrifice Smith and Law and play Elliott up front with Whitehall.
Denton and Barrows should be looking to provide width and crosses for the front two and pushing opposition full backs or wing backs to defend. The centre backs are usually dealing with a single striker so should be fine particularly wit a sitting midfielder in front of them.
Less pretty and pure but more pragmatic at this level for away games against the “middling” teams.
A bit too old school 4-4-2 for Jimmy?
Call it an inverted diamond to jazz it up a bit and get on with beating some of these poorer sides away from home. We can probably risk the home set up against the Darlington and Bishop Stortford end of things but we are not going to blow away half decent NLN teams playing their “Cup finals”.November 15, 2023 at 7:11 pm #276889“The amount of effort, workrate, determination, resilience, character, balls that we showed is everything I want to see in my team”
At least someone’s happy.
November 15, 2023 at 7:11 pm #276890We’ve had a plethora of Cup finals during the last 5 seasons and I can’t honestly say which games we turned up for, if other teams can up their game why can’t we.
November 15, 2023 at 7:14 pm #276891The team assembled is certainly good enough for promotion
Unfortunately, every now and again the manager gets involved.
November 15, 2023 at 9:10 pm #276902If we had a genuine targetman with pace we wouldn’t need a huge rejig but we obviously don’t have one. I agree with MK in sacrificing wide men, adding a CM and going with two strikers. Beestin would be perfect but he’ll take a while. Jenkins would do a job.
Dean is allergic to 4/4/2 so what about 4,3,1,2 ?
Clunan, Jenkins and scales in midfield 3 with Butterfield in a free role behind Elliot and Whitehall. Least then it would free up Butterfield to get on the ball as much as possible.
I know it’s heavily reliant on the full backs for width but Denton bombs forward and Barrows when told to get forward put some good balls in the box in the 2nd half.
Let’s face it, Dean’s not going to play 4/4/2. We need to try something different away from home.
November 16, 2023 at 9:20 am #276914November 16, 2023 at 10:40 am #276923My view is that Dean probably isn’t good enough but there’s no way the club can afford to be sacking managers at the moment, and nor should it, so we have to accept it and get behind him as best we can.

Totally agree, it’s a shame because he has the passion, he maybe needs a good second in command because we need him to pull through for us with the quality he has in the team.
November 16, 2023 at 2:40 pm #276966You absolutely baffle me sometimes!! A couple of weeks ago you wrote this:-
“Smith MOM for me. I thought he was sensational again and looks way above this level.”
And now you don’t want to pick him!!Individually he’s fantastic and way above this level but we need to be more solid away from home and if that possible increased rigidity means not choosing him and law which benefits the team as a whole, so be it.
Why is that so hard for you to understand ?
November 16, 2023 at 3:14 pm #276969Picking a system and then fitting players into it has been seen too often and absolutely slated on here, square pegs/round holes. I’m still a firm believer in picking your best players and then playing a system that suits them. Does that make it clear?
November 17, 2023 at 12:10 am #277010I simply explained to you my reasoning in potentially dropping Smith after you took yet another dig.
What you believe in is irrelevant. I’ll ask you again because you failed to answer me.
Do you now understand ?
November 17, 2023 at 9:30 am #2770181. I do not understand why not picking your best players is a good idea.
2. Why is my opinion irrelevant? Yours is not the only one possible.
3. “Yet another dig”? Please clarify.1 user thanked author for this post.
November 17, 2023 at 9:42 am #277020Both Whitehall and Elliot are a constant disappointment so to play them together would not achieve much

We ain’t no money to go hiring & firing!November 17, 2023 at 10:51 pm #277040Everyone chill…. help yourselves to a coke and smoking goat burger ! The team will gain promotion
November 18, 2023 at 7:45 am #277045Okay, Whitehall dives for fun and misses chances. He is not too untypical of the big forward found in so many teams across the nation.
I just think that we could get more out of him.
The one thing I really loved in the 60s and 70s was watching people like Ernie Moss, Alec Jeffries, Percy Freeman and – to some extent – Nige Cassidy coming in to meet corners and crosses from beyond the far post. It certainly helped their goal tallies.
Often accompanied with CBs for added terror – the ball would go over the keeper and terrifying runs would be judged to head the ball downwards past the GK. If there was no goal – a poacher would be hanging around for scraps.
How often today, the last man is level with the GK’s post and the inward run is only a couple of yards long.
You don’t have to do it every time coz variety is important but I’d wager that if that were done a few times a game – guys like Whitehall would grab more goals over a season.1 user thanked author for this post.
November 18, 2023 at 8:43 am #277047An old footy mate, sadly no longer with us who was also called Les, sat next to me for many seasons. Everytime the Iron got a corner he would shout, ” get somebody coming in on that back post “, wise words indeed, we are not physical enough in the box these days from corners, my old mate was correct.
