big squad wasn’t it
May 10, 2024 at 12:57 pm #285605THe odd surprise, DS-F being the main one for me. Let’s hope a good percentage of those offered contracts can be agreed.

Ferris surprised me, but more of all was Pugh. Pugh probably has his heart set on going back to Hereford.

May 10, 2024 at 2:10 pm #285610Pugh’s hardly featured has he? Probably came down to a choice between him & Shrimpton and Fin’s younger I think? Those offered contracts are all definite first teamers – pretty much – so it makes sense to prioritise them.
Surprised about Sembie-Ferris though, I felt he offered something we didn’t have, in the form of width & pace. But Butler did mention on the Bru podcast that he was looking for a stronger, robust team this time around.
May 10, 2024 at 2:20 pm #285611If they all agree contracts it’s shaping up well. Having a first full year with AB has got to be a huge plus.
May 10, 2024 at 3:31 pm #285614May 10, 2024 at 4:45 pm #285618Poulter liked some others probably demoralized. Pugh a better squad player than such as Beestin and Alf did seem more injured than Tom.
Tom Pugh will do fine and hopefully Hereford will move quickly because his influence was immediate when they signed him.
May 10, 2024 at 5:47 pm #285622DSF going a disappointment , maybe Law and Roberts under contract influenced this?
Surprised we have offered so many deals tbh as I was expecting a mass exodus, encouraging signs if only a few of them agree a deal.
May 10, 2024 at 6:15 pm #285624I was hoping for a mass exodus, the only one I would have offered a new contract to was Sembi Ferris most others couldn’t be arsed since Xmas.
Hope there’s room for a few additions from other clubs.May 10, 2024 at 6:21 pm #285625Maybe less ‘couldn’t be arsed’ more not being trained and coached well?

May 10, 2024 at 6:31 pm #285626DSF the only one I’m surprised and a little disappointed by, he put in some great performances towards the back end of the season and probably still has room for improvement.
Pugh definitely needs a fresh start, he just hasn’t performed in an Iron shirt.
May 10, 2024 at 6:56 pm #285627I hope not Deerey our manager was one of the coaches. Frightening really if that’s the case.
May 10, 2024 at 7:53 pm #285631Couple of surprises but DSF will follow where Dean lands a job ,bet ny left testicle on it..not the right far foe perfect
May 10, 2024 at 8:44 pm #285633Butler said during the interview that he was looking for a squad of under 20. If all the players re-sign who have been offered contracts along with the one’s who have options taken up and those who are already under contract, we only have space for additional two players.
Which hints at the same or similar system as we had under Jimmy. I can’t see 4/4/2 with those wide options.
May 11, 2024 at 7:20 am #285638Elliot’s contract offer may suggest otherwise, WG.
Law looks a decent player, albeit a bit undercooked but – oh dear – injuries. Anyone recall what he looks like?
Beestin – injury record. Hmm. But at least, I’ll wager that he will not be played wide left.May 11, 2024 at 7:55 am #285639Roberts, Beestin and Kelly as well as Law have been unavailable for half the season or more.
Beestin is the only one we have a choice about. Hopefully all 4 will have better luck with their fitness next season.
I think Law and Roberts if fully fit could play wide in a midfield four but the prospective squad if all offers are taken up leave us exposed for cover for these 2. Assume one incoming has to be a keeper.
May 11, 2024 at 8:58 am #285642Hope Beestin thinks he’s better than that and turns the contract down, we’ve looked after this perennial crock for long enough now
Jimmy’s mate back to PDFL football good.May 11, 2024 at 9:00 am #285643Butler said during the interview that he was looking for a squad of under 20.
Somebody needs to tell Butler that a match day squad will be 18. Having a playing squad of under 20, including those named above with regular injury issues, just isn’t workable.

May 11, 2024 at 9:00 am #285644Don’t forget AB is going to made us the fittest squad in the league.
Which does make you wonder why contracts have been offered to the likes of Beestin and Law but not fit lads like DSF and Pugh!
May 11, 2024 at 10:29 am #285651We’ve had Beestin for 4 seasons now, baffled to see why they’ve offered him more.
May 11, 2024 at 11:54 am #285654AB’s not allowing any sick notes is he? He’ll be pushing them on to the pitch on crutches if he has to.

That’s what I was thinking. If all those do sign then 1 of the 2 players coming in will be a GK. You have to imagine one will be a striker to go with Elliot and Whitehall which leaves us stretched out wide and at LB. Only 2 natural wingers will be Law and Roberts who both have questionable history with injuries.
Also with all the players being offered deals, options taken up and those who are still under contract would leave us with five CM players in Clunan, Scales, Shrimpton, Butterfield and Beestin. This is why I thought we would play a similar system to Jimmy.
I suppose Scales could be played at RW which would make sense, but not comfortable going into a new season with 2 natural crock wingers. When I heard Butler say he was looking for a squad under 20 players I nearly fell off my chair.
May 11, 2024 at 3:43 pm #285661Makes it even more puzzling that DS-F & McAlinden were ditched. Surely they didn’t price themselves out of a contract?

May 11, 2024 at 3:58 pm #285662Butler also talked about loan players and I suspect he sees loans in addition to his “core” squad of twenty. Particularly if he can secure low or no cost loans.
Would make sense to loan a good young keeper (Foster?) or strikers that aren’t first choice but need to be much fit (Lavery?). Possibly not from the Cods but I’m sure our other local higher level near neighbours have players that would benefit more from playing for us than their clubs reserve teams.
