Anyone remember how he took Cambridge United from the depths of lower league football to nearly reaching the “top” league.
The style of football was sneered at, scoring goals for fun with a battering ram approach, direct football that entertained the fans with goalmouth thrills and excitement but was attacked by the “purists”
Brian Laws and a lot of clubs were influenced by this approach and a return to this sort of style is the only way to bring back “bored” football fans to Scunthorpe United. Trying to play pass pass pass like Man.City is plain crazy and will only lead to disaster.
Will clubs change from the present “politically correct” style?- I doubt it, but me and the Miserton Mick’s of this world know how fans will once again talk about the fantastic match they experienced “last night”.5 users thanked author for this post.
December 4, 2022 at 1:18 pm #249930Too true Bill, this back passing seemed to start with Knill and apart from the first year and a bit of Alexander every manager wants to play negative football, I don’t think Michael Nelson’s comments about him wanting to sit deep second half rather than have a go will help his claim to the managers job with the supporters.

December 4, 2022 at 1:22 pm #249932Keith Curle’s Mansfield is the example i use. they were winning 4-2 or losing 5-3 and his view was we’re having a go and entertaining the supporters.
And we had Mick Buxton Total Football.

It started on the continent and everyone wanted to be AC Milan, Barcelona or the Spain of 2010.
Hell, England still spend the first half-hour of every game doing it!
The only thing that’ll bring the absentee fans back to GP is winning games.
Something that has eluded us for several years now.

December 6, 2022 at 7:41 am #250051‘Several years?’ I’d say the cut-off, NI, was the time when Alexander switched from highly successful tactics to ones which did not allow us to win points when dominating League One.

It started by Alexander changed styles in Jan of the season that wewere in the top two, and heading into the Championship, it was probably during Swanns fourth season here. The team were playing really entertaining and winning football, then Alexander changed it to do not lose astyle, and we ended up with 3 points from the next 9 matches. When I asked ASlexander why he changed it, he answered that teams had sussed them out, and a change was needed, so brilliant to watch to boring losses everyt week was his awnswer!!!!!, we have played that type of game ever since then and gone from top of league 1 into bottom of ther National league, mostly with managers that continue with this boring shite.

December 7, 2022 at 5:26 am #250091I would make one point, BS, I believe that this had already kicked in a good few weeks before the January.
The move by Alexander was so dramatic, especially when we were in such a strong position – I don’t think I would dare to publish some of the suspicions which currently wander around my brain. If I had tangible evidence, however … then maybe.December 7, 2022 at 5:49 am #250092I wonder who may have been behind his change of style ?
It wouldn’t have been pressure put on him by a certain someone, would it ?
