We all can surely recall young Dawson being given some outings a long time ago.
Taking the current news at face value – we have offered him a good contract but the likes of Celtic are in for him!
Apparently, he has netted 16 in the Youth Alliance.Perhaps readers may care to guess what my question might be.
April 11, 2021 at 9:06 am #204574Well les if you are going to say we should have offered him something sooner I would suggest Dawson senior, a wily old former player who is still involved professionally in the game at a reasonably high level, would have said, ” just wait and see son something bigger and better may come along for you “. Also I’m sure Andy and his lad will have had plenty of input from other people in the game that things were going to probably take off for Joey in a bigger way if he continued his progress. Why not wait, go to a bigger set up with better coaches and more money in your back pocket as a result. The old no brainer really.
April 11, 2021 at 10:08 am #204578I am surprised he hasn’t been given a chance on the bench.
April 11, 2021 at 10:28 am #204579All true, IA but Mick wins the coconut.
If he has that kind of talent – it is difficult to see why Joey would not have been a bench regular – and possible starter.
At least there should be a fee. Sell-on clauses – are they possible with young uns?April 11, 2021 at 10:39 am #204580We don’t have a great record recently of giving our youngsters much of a chance at first team level on a regular basis. (There are those that think Godden and Wootton weren’t even though they had 5 years to prove themselves) If Dawson is going to get the same treatment then the answer is obvious – SELL. The alternative of course is to give him game time in the remaining matches and I don’t mean 10 meaningless minutes at the end of a game. Players of a similar age have made their debuts at a much higher level than lower L2 after all.
April 11, 2021 at 11:28 am #204581Possibly wanted to get him on a contract if we could before drawing wider attention to him. Goals in the youth alliance is one thing but if he’s scoring league goals at 16 a lot more people would be sniffing.
But maybe that’s giving us too much credit.
Sell on/future fees are possible if he stays in England. If he goes to Celtic I don’t think we’ll get anything at all.
April 11, 2021 at 1:35 pm #204582If he is a wonderkid it will be an act of footballing and financial negligence if he leaves without a fee. Given the state of some of our forward play, he should have been encouraged to stay and sign a contract through regular first team action.
There are 17 year olds playing international football!! Keegan had 124 appearances up to the age of 20.
April 11, 2021 at 2:02 pm #204584He was given his debut about 20 months ago in the League Cup Vs Derby becoming our youngest ever player, so I’ve always found it a bit strange that we haven’t seen him anywhere near the first team since.
There were rumours of Arsenal sniffing around at that time too.
April 11, 2021 at 2:34 pm #204585Like most others, I find it strange too. Given the board are always banging on about how we’re going down the youth route, and his obvious ability, it beggars belief that he’s not been anywhere near the first team.
April 11, 2021 at 4:05 pm #204587Really?
You actually believe what the club tell you these days?1 user thanked author for this post.

He can’t leave without some sort of settlement as a contract offer has been made but it will be nowhere what we should be looking forward to.
April 12, 2021 at 12:31 pm #204609Unfortunately it’s the lot of the small town club which occurs at many clubs like ours up and down the land, it’s also the reason why we operate most of the time between leagues 1 & 2 with the odd Championship flirtation. No doubt some bright spark will come on and say we should match any offer from Celtic to show our true ambition, then later on start moaning about the debt we find ourselves in.
April 12, 2021 at 8:03 pm #204630Somebody is definitely wiggling our winkies.
This is the second time a rumour of this type has emerged about this young lad.
To be brutally honest he has done nothing to merit interest from any club let alone Celtic.
Might I suggest that Dad Andy and Uncle Mike may just have enough clout and nous on how to play the football politics game. Enough to drop a ‘titbit’ to a journo or agent in order to generate interest around the young man especially at contract renewal time.
Now thats not to say he hasn’t got potential nor that he wont make it.
April 13, 2021 at 3:31 am #204647Such cynicism, IK.
You’ll be having a go at agents next!April 13, 2021 at 8:16 am #204648Mr Dawson certainly does have potential, lots of it.
He is the type that bigger clubs would love the opportunity to improve

Thanks to the awful EPPP arrangement, even if he stays in England, we will only get a fixed fee and it won’t be very much.
