She wasn’t arrested for praying. If you have a restraining order, you can’t be in a location of proximity to what you’re restrained from, no matter what you’re doing. It’s like football banning orders. A banned fan has to report to the police on matchdays and stay away from the ground by a certain mile radius. If they violate it, they may be arrested, but they wouldn’t be arrested because they were doing a mundane act (let’s say, walking a dog by the ground). It was because they violated a restriction order.

“somebody who prays a lot” is NOT the opposite of a terrorist, regardless of what Fox news says. Religiously inspired terrorism is one of the major sources of terrorism, probably second only behind ethno-nationlist (with a lot of overlap between the two).

I think arresting a nutter who silently prays near clinics, is a waste of police time (if that is all she does, if she preys on woman at their most vulnerable then she gets what she deserves), but if that’s all she does, then why bother travelling there, why not pray at home ? Or does her god only listen when you appear as a nutter? A god who is undiverted by the starving masses but who’s interests are purely on middle class white women hanging around street corners?

I’m not sure the Mrs Merton show would have been so successful, if it was a theological debate between the host and a nun. One of the reasons why people get annoyed by bpg’s posts, is the absolute certainty in his belief. The absolute certainty that has been responsible for many atrocities. “Why do you believe Jesus Christ is the only way to Heaven?” would be a reasonable question, leading to a very similar answer. A little uncertainty in one’s belief, whether it’s theist or atheist, can help.

Absolutely right, Bill. And for several good reasons.
The first is that I am at no one’s beck and call … your apparent obsession with my approving your posts is not healthy. The second is that I will only thank when I am thankful and like when I like something. In general I am neither thankful for nor approving of your posts because, although in many cases .. though not all … I might sit on your side of the discussion, I find your posts lacking in humility and designed to somehow prove your superiority. The Biblical injunction to ‘speak the Truth in love’ seems to have passed you by.
I have posted many times and sometimes at length about my faith and have had mixed responses. Many times I have been roundly mocked and occasionally vilified. On the other hand there have occasionally been some respectful exchanges, genuine questions and amicable conclusions. It’s been a cause of sadness to me in recent months not only that your resentment and bitterness against me has been so publicly displayed but also that your general approach has caused me to steer clear of any discussions surrounding Christianity and faith because our approaches are so different.
I had hoped that I would not have to respond in this way to your repeated jibes … that the sense of offense you have against me would eventually die down. Sidey had it right earlier when he reflected that it did not put you in a good light to keep up this vendetta and also that he did not want to be cruel. That has been my own position but there has to come a time for you put behind you the offense you are holding, recognise that we may have the same ‘label’ but are actually poles apart so that you don’t expect something from me that I can’t give … and to forgive and move on.
Again to anyone looking on .. I didn’t want this spat so publicly displayed but have not been given much choice because it keeps being aired so publicly. What must you think of these ‘Christians?’

I think most of us on this side JI will not bring your faith into it, it’s your position and you have discussed and defended it many times and I applaud you for that. Whilst I don’t agree with a lot of what you say I do respect your right to say these things and I am at a total loss why bill adopts this hostile attitude with you in the way he does. It would be a cheap shot if any of us justified our position on your faith through his actions, he comes across as very bitter sometimes and I know many Christians who are nothing like him in attitude. Keep a clear head on these matters and I wish you all the best for the future, have a peaceful weekend.
